An hour from my house. Last year, during record flooding, the Batfish actually floated off her resting spot. Quick work by park staff and emergency services, managed to get her moored in a makeshift manner, preventing her from making her last sortie.

Back in late eighties my wife daughter and I went to see Batfish. It was closed for some work on the building. There was a original crew member there who was a staff volunteer. We talked he was surprised that I knew Batfish history. He let me have run of the boat. I even went the Batteries and bilge. When I came topside I had many questions of which the old sailor patiently answered. I think myself very lucky.

The bond of a Submarine crew last for a very long time, When I retired from the U.S. Navy in 2004, both Pacflt and SubPac were both prior Captains of mine and for some odd reason still liked me. Nothing like being a Chief and calling a 3-Star and a 4-Star by their first names. Come to think of it, I knew the first name of every Captain I ever sailed under. For the record, a Submarine batter that gets flooded out produces Chlorine gas and Hydrogen gas. The Hydrogen self burns at 4% atmosphere and self detonates at 8% atmosphere. QMC(SS) USN (Ret.)

A little clarification on the explanation of the battery compartment at 7:15. Lead acid batteries do not produce nitrogen, and nitrogen is not toxic. Batteries produce hydrogen, which is explosive. Hydrogen is normally produced during charging, caused by the dissociation of water in the electrolyte into hydrogen and oxygen. These gases are vented overboard during charging, which is done on the surface using the air breathing diesel engines. Battery maintenance includes testing the specific gravity of the electrolyte and adding water and/or acid when necessary. I believe the confusion occurs because if seawater enters the battery spaces, chlorine gas is produced, which is toxic.

US Navy Submarine Service And remarkably even with the inexcusable failure of the ordinance department in regard to the Mark 14 and the 2 years it took to correct it, the the US Navy Submarine Service managed to reduce the IJN and the Japanese merchant fleet to near extinction. So in less than 3 years we sank 5.3 million tons of shipping. With a loss of 52 boats and 3,305 men. Our Navy does not consider them lost, " They are on Eternal Patrol."

I enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1968. I performed drills on reserve destroyer USS Hyman (DD-732) at Naval Support Activity New Orleans before I started basic training and active duty. I remember the USS Batfish moored to decrepit old docks near the Hyman in the Mississippi River. Being curious, I even boarded her one time, climbing down a ladder and surprising a caretaker. I wish I had known her storied history during my brief visit.

One US submarine fired 15 torpedoes at a Japanese cargo ship. 2 torpedoes missed, but they heard 13 "CLANG!"s as they bounced off the ships hull! They didn't fire their 16th (last) torpedo. They returned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and nearly fired the last torpedo at the Navy Ordinance Office, but figure it wouldn't go off anyway!

@@johnbates7422 Yeah, been playing console to get the old nostalgia of the time before carriers, and I sort of miss them and sort of don't.....as for submarines, they aren't for world of ships, the main issue is the fact that how OP they are, which makes sense seeing as how if your team doesn't have anyone attempting to hunt them they can get away with alot of bullshit. I believe the main issue is that anti submarine weapons and tactics usually involve a fleet being able to focus on killing one target. If you add in the fact that 14 other ships are in the area firing on you, trying to coordinate your side into focusing on a sub is extremely difficult....

Very informative video and enjoyed it a lot. The USS Drum came to Mobile, AL in 1969 I believe it was along side the battleship Alabama. Both vessels have exemplary service records. The Drum was pulled out of the water like the Batfish.

A few years back (2019?) we had severe flooding and the Batfish was once again afloat and broken loose or so I'm told, and it took some hard and quick work to secure her again.

I remember my mom and dad taking us to the BATFISH to tour her back in the 80's. I was blown away as kid. Always enjoyed to see the boat. I hope to take my son to see her. I believe she is last submarine to have sub kills from WWII to present day. No other U.S. sub has a kill that's not classified from what I understand. (🇺🇸USS BATFISH GET SOME!!🇺🇸⚓⚓⚓)

Pretty cool. I had no idea that Batfish had been preserved as a museum ship, much less how it would wind up in Oklahoma. But I've toured the USS Pampanito a couple of times. And it's really amazing to see these boats in person... even mores when you stop and realize just how crowded it must have been with 80+ crew versus a just couple dozen spectators.

One US submarine fired 15 torpedoes at a Japanese cargo ship. 2 torpedoes missed, but they heard 13 "CLANG!"s as they bounced off the ships hull! They didn't fire their 16th (last) torpedo. They returned to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and nearly fired the last torpedo at the US Navy Ordinance Office, but figure it wouldn't go off anyway!

Three Japanese submarines sunk in three days... I don't know of a Las Vegas bookie who wouldn't give a 500-to-1 odds of that, then cry come pay-off day. ~_^

A very interesting video. Many thanks. Just one thing! At 7:34, you mention two gases, produced by (the batteries) coming into contact with flooding sea water. Hydrogen and Nitrogen. Hydrogen is explosive. The other gas is Chlorine, and it is poisonous. Nitrogen is an important component gas in the air that we breath. The other gas that was toxic in high concentrations was breathed out CO2.
