I actually feel like it’s a mark of respect, warrior to warrior, to not act scared or run away, but to calmly walk in a straight line to face the certain death that haka promises. It feels like the opposing team is trying to be worthy of such an intimidating and beautiful haka.

Back in the day, when the All-Blacks would come to England, you couldn't hear the players on the field as the whole crowd would be screaming Swing Low Sweet Chariot at the top of their lungs. To fear the haka is normal. To cower before it is unforgivable.

Im Zulu and we chant the same way they do Haka. For us we do it mostly when we narrate personal or clan names or when we fight wars or struggle for freedom, It's always intense and meant to express deep emotions. @@PipiakaMe-bx3uh yeah women did do a different haka but it was different to the male war haka’s and look your tribe can say that they had women warriors but from all the research I’ve done on the musket wars there were no women warriors but women did follow the war parties as camp followers on campaigns to keep the men company and cook and for Tapu ceremonial reasons but women on the frontlines did not happen say for like the very rare few and I ain’t talking like Viking women rare which is a lot rarer than shows like Viking try to depict but I mean even rarer it was only the New Zealand wars were you start to see women taking a bigger role in combat as they would be in the forts loading guns for the men to fire at the enemy and this was only due to the fact that a large portion of the male population was wiped out in the musket wars

To see the haka performed so well by the whole team (Māori, Pacifika, European), and then to receive affirmation from across the world is such a credit to our Women. Most of the Māori women in the team have been nurtured in our Maori culture - it 100% makes a difference to the delivery - and even the content. For our international viewers - The beginning part was a welcome to our visitors (with no irony intended related to the contest about to start) - this was spectacular. These words only make sense when you are speaking as 'home people' - so this part is unlikely to be performed overseas.....And when the haka is delivered like this there is no translation needed for the second part (lol).
@dallashibbs6540
@dallashibbs6540 Жыл бұрын
@Hamish Banish I like the equality ideals of a good contest too. I do think culture can make an event or occasion a little more memorable - especially if it is authentic and honours the contest- think big marching bands that play before grid iron games in the US or the elaborate ceremony before Thai kickboxing contests. Most visiting teams / athletes/ fans savour the experience. Try talking to the Irish team / fans that defeated the All blacks in 2022 - they rate the series win as the single most significant moment in their 120 years of playing test rugby.

Every time I hear people scream about cultural appropriation, every time I hear people complain about the plight of indigenous peoples, I think about this. We could have shared our cultures. We could have come together and allowed ourselves to be friends, allies, and fellows. No, the Maori journey wasn't perfect. I can't think of any people's which has. But I'm from the American Midwest, and it saddens me that we've not been able to preserve native culture more, that we've not made a better effort to integrate their nations into ours, but instead, we kick them off into reservations, and frankly many of them want to stay there and keep "fighting" a centuries-old resistance. Culture only continues if you share it. Thank goodness, the Maori found the wisdom to share theirs. What an amazingly powerful and beautiful thing to watch!

It's been long since I last saw Haka, I thought it started trending and losing a bit of meaning, but this brought me back. beautiful contrast between the welcoming and the warrior part of it, seeing women psyching themselves up, breathing hard with eyes bulging with anticipation, sends chills down the spine of grown men. I saw my wife deliver our children and I recognized the war face, that same adrenaline and survival instinct in the face of unimaginable pain. Long live the female of the species. Without them, nothing.

This is next-level, alright. Every video of the haka that I get to watch is moving. There's something so primal and awe-inspiring about how deep into it everyone gets. It's also interesting to note the formation of the Australian team and how they moved together with their arms around each other. Gotta watch that one again.

A lot of comments mentioning goosebumps. An interesting fact about humans getting goosebumps in the absence of cold. Is that when we were primates covered in hair and confronted by a predator the goosebumps caused the hair to puff out to make you look bigger and more intimidating. In the hope that the predator would back down. Strange that the Maori haka invokes such a response. Can't think of another cultural performance that does that.

Mate, you've hit on the trans-cultural and lingual power of the haka - it's a somewhat unique phenomena, all that goosebumps business. Interestingly, primates also experience what you described in situations which are considered by humans to be 'awe-inspiring' (near places of extraordinary natural beauty for example).

@@ac-qd2cg What's childish about a cultural performance? Do you find other cultures childish? As far as I know cultures are mainly influenced by adults and passed down. A pretty pathetic and uneducated comment. The British didn't win the NZ war. A treaty was signed as a truce. Maori also virtually gave away land in exchange for European resources. Some tribes were vacated from their land based on British laws and sanctions. Also, it's spelt British, not brittish.
