@jefferee2002 the USA shouldn't have to defend everyone. The rest of Nato are taking the piss. You won't get any arguments from me there. The US taxpayers are funding the defence of the free world whilst the rest spend their money on benefits and over funded healthcare systems. No wonder the yanks don't have a state funded NHS. They're too busy defending the free world. Trump was absolutely correct especially when he singled out Germany. Their defence spending for such a wealthy nation was pathetic. Seem to have woke up recently lol. The threat from China will mean the USA can't do it all alone anymore. An axis of dictatorships like China North Korea Russia and Iran means Europe needs to build up it's strength..

Powered by two Bechtel nuclear reactors, each with output of about 700 megawatts! I worked for Bechtel Power Corporation (while in the Naval Reserve), which built scores of nuclear reactors for power generation. This provides gobs (technical term, sorry) of extra power for the carrier. And more of the ship is electrified and uses far less actual steam (for example, the catapults), which reduces maintenance, repair, and numbers of crew members required. Laser guns, anyone?

Something often forgotten is that these big carriers are more than just military weapons. A mobile airbase has a lot of utility, sometimes it sees humanitarian duty. The USS Ronald Reagan was in the area of Japan after the earthquake and tsunami and was able to provide a lot of service to Japan in the rescue and relief efforts.

For a guy who spent his life on Destroyers and Frigates, walking the hangar deck on one of these (Vinson and Stennis in my case) was pretty impressive. Seeing the anchor deck, which is essentially pretty much the size of a frigates hangar made one think of all the space there was to work in. Then you started thinking about how many weapons and resources would be allocated to sinking it and about 100 aircraft taking out an entire strike group at the same time....

It’s huge! I remember that when our (rather ‘tiddly ’ in comparison) small aircraft carriers came into service the Russian ‘Leader’ was quoted as saying “I look forward to sinking them!” (I can’t recall the exact quote) and although he might ‘ have a go’ at sinking our little aircraft-carrying ships (I’m from the days of full size British Carriers such as HMS Eagle, Ark Royal, etc.) I think even the modern version of ‘ Ivan The Terrible Tsar’ would think twice about tackling this giant and its support vessels! Very impressive, but why is the island so far aft? It makes her look a bit like an oil tanker or container ship. Anyway, I hope the ship's company all had a good run ashore in Portsmouth and that they were made welcome. Were there no escorting destroyers or frigates?

Several not docked at Portsmouth. A CVN always has at least four Burke-class destroyers, a cruiser, a supply ship, and at least one fast attack submarine with it at all times underway. Together they form a bubble of protection around the carrier, including beneath. This is the Aegis defense system. Other ships, such as frigates, are attached to the Strike Group on a temporary basis. The USA has no frigates at the moment though several are being built.

Modern day U S carriers do not need escorts. Nothing gets close to them that they don't want close to them. With Hornets flying Combat Air Patrol (CAP), ASW helos, datalink to Aegis units, that carrier is probably the safest place on the ocean. The USS America CV-66 was sank to become a reef after decomissioning. It took 2 to 3 days of pounding by Harpoon missiles, 200 lb bombs and MK 48 torpedoes. They finally had to place explosive charges aboard her to finally take her down. I was in an F-14 Squadron on USS Nimitz. The island on the new class is so far back to facilitate aircraft positioning on the flight deck.

In our Navy, boats are subs. If it floats, it's a ship. I saw many a sailor end up in deep scuzz for calling a ship a boat.

@@Lexhunter1 That was what I was thinking. I know that HMS _Queen Elizabeth_ is on it's CSG22 outing in the North of Europe. But I wondered - for lack of knowing the route of the US carrier - if GRF was going that way as well.

Not much to look at in Portsmouth is there? Makes me wonder if the Seagull's are as sexy there as they are in Australia?

Shame the capabilities of our carriers are so badly compromised by not having the ability to catapult launch aircraft, and scrimping on the defensive armament.
