Hi JJ yes you’ve reminded me of something I forgot to add! It’s ok if you were just driving about on a slippy surface but not doing what I’ve done here! They didn’t break but I’m sure it will have stressed them(maybe) They’ve always been a piece which either seem fine or just snap when you go over their tolerance so I could be ok.

@@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines I once attached tracks the way as in the video, I learned the hard way that it takes next to no effort to permanently destroy them if bent backwards. Not that the machine wasn't amazing of course.

Hey cheers! There is a certain tolerance they can take and they will be fine, I think the dual setup really lightened the load and it was light model. But like you say once they bend a touch they’re as good as broke! I’ll find out when they go on a powerful tank soon lol :)

I feel like you can get rid of a lot of the wobble by adding some idler gears in front and behind the main driving gears (on the outside), so the track bends at the same place instead of the bending point moving when you accelerate/decelerate. Would probably also help with the uneven load on the motors when it rocks back and forth. Great build!

wow that's pretty amazing. Love the terrain compliance. What would happen if you had triple tracks, and the middle one the right way for drive? For all those who say it's bad for the tracks, the load is spread over many links, so the un-hooking effect is nowhere near as strong as it would be if you had two links in your hand. Nice one Gaz! 👍🍺😎

@@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines that's very kind of you to say so, you also have many other fans with ideas too. It’s bad for these technic Lego tracks only because they are assembled backward which causes the connection points to deform under the load which damages them.
@erictheepic5019
@erictheepic5019 2 жыл бұрын
This ultimately *isn't* any better than just crushing the tracks in your hand. The only reason these tracks aren't failing is because the weight of the machine isn't that high, and the load is distributed over four duplicate examples of the backwards-bending track links. You've probably heard the expression that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The reason this is true because *all of the load has to go through each link.* The load doesn't get magically transported to the other end just by virtue of there being more links; each individual link has to carry all that load. If you had this setup in your hand, you could snap it in half as easily as you would two links, or maybe even easier due to the mechanical advantage provided by the longer lever arm. So, don't trick yourself into thinking that this isn't incredibly bad for the tracks.

@joshuab4586
@joshuab4586 2 жыл бұрын
I think this tank actually moves pretty counterintuitively, it seems to mostly be moving itself backwards along the tracks which compresses the tread in the back and the spring back from the compression moves it forward. You can see it do a little bounce back and forth as it goes. I wonder if only having a back hub or front hub would effect it.

Wheels in the middle of the supportive track bends are a good way to limit how far the track bends. Either the track bends all the way to a pinch without issues, or, wheel supports to limit how sharply the tracks bend are exactly what you need, whatever the purpose of a wheel free zone under the middle area of the tracks actually is. Tanks kind of already have exactly whatever benefits, other than a certain weight distribution, are had with this limited bend method.

@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines

Hey why does it defy the purpose of using tracks? The tracks are doing quite a lot here, sorry if I read it wrong :)
@cmdrratzass7305
@cmdrratzass7305 2 жыл бұрын
@@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines The main purpose of tracks is to spread the weight of the vehicle over a large area. Wheels only have a small contact patch that has to support the entire weight. On the road, this is no problem, but on soft ground heavy vehicles tend to sink in and get stuck. Tracks distribute the same weight over a much bigger area to prevent that. In this built the entire middle section of the tracks has no support and can therefore not support the weight of the vehicle. Now basically only two small spots where the bent part of the tracks touches the ground carry all that weight, while the entire center part contributes little to nothing. Of course it will eventually support the vehicle weight, if you push it so far up that there is so much tension in the tracks that they can’t bend any further. But on even ground and while driving over small obstacles the middle part is basically just lying around, not carrying any load. It basically combines the disadvantages of tracks with the disadvantages of wheels and none of their respective advantages. However… It looks pretty dang cool!
@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines
@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines 2 жыл бұрын
I totally understand what you’re saying but can you explain why this thing crawls over most objects with ease where a 4x4 would completely fail(in a big way) and a conventional tank would also fail on the rock as it just wants to go vertical. You can see on the pillow the whole tracks is doing a job, just like on the soil and over the bricks. This is quite a light model and the tension in the tracks is more than you think I feel :) Also the way the tracks clear obstacles for the rear and give grip in a place a tyre can’t physically do which is why 4x4 are terrible on even small vertical climbs. Obviously this design has no use as steering… it’s a big problem lol but if you played with the model you would see how effective it is. Even when you drive over your hand you can feel the middle of the tracks gripping. But I appreciate you probably can’t see that like I have. For me proof is in the pudding and this has crawled over objects better than any 4x4 or tank I have so far whilst acting drunk :)

I'm a couple weeks late to the game, but I'm loving your video. Now, as for what you said in the video about moving well for tracks that have no traction. The reason is quite simple, unlike a normal tank that's using the tread on the track to move forward, your design is actually laying the track down infront of it and "driving" ontop of the track.... if that makes sense. Look up a FAUN track way for a better idea of what I'm talking about.

Hey thank you very much, it’s a bit of a tricky one tbh. It would probably be better with some guiders to keep it inline.

Very cool idea, though it seems very limited as you can't control the radius or the springiness. Perhaps you could use the track in the normal direction, but put a big rubber tire without its inner rim inside it for a similar effect? It will probably come with a lot of challenges to keep the tire in place, but it will probably be able to handle more weight without risking damaging the parts.

That works surprisingly well. Something along similar lines could have some serious real world applications once scaled up.

Would it be possible to build a track with some level of sideways articulation, that would allow for a "arc" shaped contact patch with the ground in order to turn, basically having the front and rear rails of the tracks steer like on a 4-wheel steering vehicle, or having the whole tank articulate in the middle like some wheeled loader models, perhaps with the addition of some sort of tensioner mechanism to correct for change in the distance between the front and rear rails?

@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines 2 жыл бұрын
I think an articulated one would be a great idea! That way you lose the friction when turning etc. Nice! The problem is these tracks are the wrong here and snag on anything other than a smooth surface.

Hey there thank you so much, that means a lot from you! :) I don’t think this one would fair too well, maybe with the right dimension of steps it could work!

@@GazRsExtremeBrickMachines Yes, of course, you have to adapt the size of the tank for a standard 17cm step.

Yo! Cheers Nick really appreciate it! Yeah I loved that too watching the tracks cover things! Impossible to do it that good conventionally so it has a use lol I can’t believe how well it’s gone either! I’m someone who loves watching other youtubers and never expected this at all! The goal was 1000 subs one day 😀😀

Since the front and back are always a semicircle you could ass a brace that goes from the motor to the bottom of the bottom of the treads to maintain strength as the tread can’t contort any more
