Tie a constrictor knot on the support cane, then use a reef knot (square knot), with the long tails to loosely support the growing stem. The constrictor knot stops the string plant support slipping down the cane.

Guys don't worry, when he says it won't come loose, he means it won't come loose naturally, or if you tug on the ends, but if you pull on one part of the rope from the middle of the x it should loosen, then you can pull one end of the rope out of the x and the knot is undone. Just wanted to clarify that for anyone who thought it would literally be impossible to untie it. This doesn't mean you should tie the constrictor knot on yourself though, especially not the neck (for all you people with intrusive thoughts - don't you dare).

One of the first things that were taught to me as a scout is that a well done knot has three qualities: it is easy to tie, aesthetic, and easy to untie. @@tw1nn319 this knot is a bastardised clove hitch. A clove hitch does the same job, with the advantage that it is much easier to undo when you want it undone. A good knot is easy to tie, easy to untie, and good at doing the job it's intended for.

But the use I can see is more outdated for today: it could be used for some kind of structure you intend to take down at some point, but want it up for a while, want no chance of it coming loose, and you might have an excuse for it not to be done with nails. I can't imagine anything super complex, but I've seen people make some wild stuff with just wood and rope. So my best guess is that it's for putting stuff up and leaving it there in a condition that makes it hard to fall apart or steal. Because if your knot is easy to untie, that's not just for you.
