Basement casanova my guess is the judge had little sympathy for her because she probably knew the guy was unlicensed in the first place. This was a homeowner looking to cheap out as much as possible, she got what she paid for honestly. It is everyone's responsibility to use common sense in situations and do some research, but she obviously didn't care about if the guy was insured or licensed, just the price point. Sorry to be a jerk but I say tough shit, she learned a valuable lesson.

@@crx122 So you mean from a legal perspective she wasn't really paying anybody that needed to follow any codes or do a certain level of work, ya? Makes sense. Just figured there would be some sort of contract or something if she's still spending 10k.

The landlord at my last place bought a century-old factory and "fixed it up" himself to turn into apartments. He sprayed cement spackle all over the door frames, and used styrofoam to fill holes in the exterior walls and then spackled over top. When I had my satellite dish installed, the installer told me my landlord "fixed" the leaking roof by nailing blue dollar store tarp over rotten wood and crumbling tar.

hey buddy for the plumbing boot I like to cut the bottom shingle to go over where the three exposed nails are and just tar everything so you don't have any nails exposed and you have the one below tucked underneath far enough. I just don't like to have exposed nails on a shingle roof at all. An added touch is cutting a small slit in the middle of the bottom so that the water doesn't pool up. Many If I had a shed to do that would've been perfect to reuse those shingles-owens corning hold like a mother, but they are a pain to cut through. Happy roofing brother.

In my neck of the woods contractors have to be licensed, registered, and insured. In order to keep your license you need to attend continuing education classes every two years. Also, virtually all home improvement jobs, like roofing, require permits and inspections. Many of my colleagues complain about the process but it really does help weed out the fly-by-night hacks. The inspector in my town would have never passed that roof job and the client would not have to pay until all of the issues are addressed.

Always make sure to check with your local building department for permit requirements. Any legitimate contractor will not say permits are not required nor attempt to discourage getting the required permits. At minimum, check with the building department to see whether or not a permit is required...there's no charge for asking. A permit ensures that the work performed is checked by a building inspector. And it's one's protection when filing an insurance claim for subsequent damage (e.g. water damage...insurance companies usually refuse to pay if the work was completed without the required permit). The inspector will require substandard work to be corrected...and the contractor cannot charge you additional fees. Great video!

This actually makes me more nervous about having work done. I know there are good contractors out there but it is so hard to verify that the crew that you have had a bid from is actually going to do the job right. I like doing things myself, but there are so many subtle things that make things right, I know it will take me 3X longer than the real pros.

Un related to the bad roof . Just a heads up . I'm coming across roofs shingled with those sure nail shingles and the fabric strip is absorbing water and rusting out nails causing leaks. The roofs I'm finding like this are about ten years old .

bolerdweller yeah I live in Vancouver and work on roofs almost everyday and have rarely ever seen houses without it , I guess it could depend where you live but for me it’s almost a no brainer, although I understand and agree with your comment. I still believe it’s incomparable to a geological variable like Florida houses not having gutters, but I could see how some people wouldn’t want to pay extra for the materials and extra labour as well ! If she has a legal and binding contract she will have a lawsuit. If she has no contract or a vaguely termed contract she will be wasting her time and money with a lawsuit. Sad but true. Never hire unlicensed contractors and always have a well defined contract with all scopes of work detailed.

@@yardfowl3149 Unlicensed contractor does not mean they are not quality contractors. Just the same that just because you have a college degree mean that you are smart in the field that you choose to pursue. I have seen shoddy work by licensed contractors as well. Maybe you should change it to "hire a contractor with whom you can go see their work" anything less and you are gambling licensed or not.

You could done a California weave on the valleys, I’ve done copper or aluminum inlays also, just dependent on what they want, the shop I worked out of was fully equipped for metal fabrication, brakes, shears, Pittsburgh etc, made all of our eaves and gutter in-house, though we mainly did government contracted built up, cost and proper installation are always a factor, and I hand nail exclusively, can average about 2-3 square an hour on 10 pitch and below, 12 on is always slow because toe boards and fall arrestees, I’ve just had too many problems with guns when the shaft becomes worn having to back and make sure the nail heads are fully flush.

I just got done one like this. It was for section 8, so before I got to it the state had someone else come in and do it. For the price I guess they couldn’t beat it. It was literally shingled the same way. Ran them like 3 tabs and everything. They replywooded right over the old existing rotten wood, then ran fascia board on top of old rotten fascia board. And every bottom rotted again where they had seam over seam. No starter strip. It was bad. Had to rebuild all the over hangs . And redo the gutter and shit. It was bad
