Wang Manyu has been one of the 2 or 3 best players in the world. No wonder she was World Singles Champion in 2021. In this match, both players went for broke. First, Wang adjusted better than Ito. Second, Wang countered better than Ito. That was the match. This has been the norm when Chinese TT players vs non-Chinese TT players. Chinese players tend to adjust and figure out their opponents in real-time more often than not.

Yes, you are correct. In this case, one needs to win four games to win a match. So, to win a match, one must have enough tricks to bother one's opponent for four games. Ito's depth isn't deep enough to win three games against the best Chinese players. Never mention winning four games to win a match. She hasn't deepened since she first defeated the best Chinese players. Generally speaking, the Chinese coaches and players have Ito figured out. In this match, it took two games to exhaust all her tricks, and all her tricks won her two games. Afterward, Wang saw all of Ito's tricks and became used to them. In the next four games, Wang knew how to deal with all of Ito's tricks and had more tricks of her own to bother Ito. Unfortunately, Ito stayed the same, repeated the first two games performance, and can no longer bother Wang.

Great Post. "Chinese players tend to adjust and figure out their opponents in real-time more often than not." While this is a key factor in becoming a champions in every Sports, the other key factor is mentality.

First 2 and half games, Mima played so sharp and fearless, putting tremendous pressure on Wang Manyu. It seemed Mima's old glorious day was coming back only her Chinese opponent this time was Wang, the most resilient player on Chinese women side. Once Wang won the third game, the tide had reversed and Wang grew more confidence and Mima reverted to the usual reckless error prone player, the result of match was inevitable. All first three games, Mima started off hot gaining big lead quickly only saw Wang steadily narrowing the gap. Wang is the player all Japanese girls would try to avoid.

Ito can miss. When she does, she doesn’t adjust well. So it’s 50/50. Wang is not able to impose her game, but is so technically proficient, she can still spin her way back into contention given the smallest chance. In slowmo, we can see her excellence

It has nothing to do if she’s winning or losing. If she has to play more rallies for each point she can’t maintain focus. Her playing style means if she can’t win each point quickly she will be in trouble.

It doesn't matter that much that Ito lost. People love her not because she can always win games but because of her unique styles and the entertainment she brings to the table tennis games. And she was doing very well in this tournament!

It actually does matter to ITO herself. I still feel that ITO made a terrible decision to offend the Japanese TT association. Girls like Hina Hayata is improving while Ito stays stagnant in her own land. It's upsetting to think of it.

@@hiper9035 Ito actually finds the Japanese League to be awful and uncompetitive for them to challenge the quality of Chinese players. She has no proper coach as a result. I believe she offended her national coaching staffs and they won't even place her in their team lineup.
