I wanted to say I really like your content, it's sad KZbin doesn't feel the same Can we expect a special video on Romania? You did a between two wars episode on Poland, Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia so I think Romania would also fit in. @@kostam.1113 Thanking you for pointing that out. The British were more than happy to see the SFR Yugoslavia become the Former SFR Yugoslavia. After the fall of communism in Eastern Europe, Yugoslavia was in the best candidate of all the former communist states for entry into the EU. Of all the East-Euro countries, Yugoslavia had the best economy, the strongest ties to the EU, etc. The British did not want Yugoslavia in the EU because of Yugoslavia's strong economic and cultural ties to Germany. The British thought Yugoslavia in the EU would bring too much power and influence to Germany. Yugoslavia had to die for that reason.

My father was a Lieutenant in the Royal Guards at the time and involved in the coup with his commanding officer Knezevic. There is a photo of him escorting the deposed Prime Minister of the time down Parliament steps, in the French Magazine The World (La Monde).

Thank you for this episode. IN the previous video I commented that the coup was not organized by the British and many denied my claim. Apparently you need to post a source so people would believe it. Hope some of this clears the name of Serbian people as many would label us as warmongers and such. We just love our freedom, and seems like it might be our downfall. Keep up the good work.

As a Serb i'll tell you this, imagine if you will it's 1941, you are living in Serbia, chances are very high that you, your father and/grandfather fought/died in the Great War. Imagine knowing the horrors that you and your people suffered by the hands of Austrian and German solders and the exodus over Albanian mountains and fighting side by side with the Greeks and French in Salonica. Then your king comes and tells you that Germans are your friends, that the wish you no harm if you just move to the side and let them conquer Greece, a country that sheltered and feed and treated you and your fellow solders, your brothers in arms and in faith. Imagine all that and tell me how you feel. That's your origin of the coup.

Great demonstrations in Belgrade soon after the coup showed that people were against the pact. People and the army represented patriotic power in society (memories from war with the germans were still strong as well as feelings for old allies British and especially French)

Well, that feeling was only among Serbs, who tbh were only people patriotic to that Kingdom. Considering other nations, for most of them Kingdom of Yugoslavia was just a prison, so there was no need to defend that country and also they were mainly in WW1 on Central Powers side. Greetings

@Kit it's not that the treaty was an act of friendship. Did you watch the bio of Prince Paul from a few days ago? He went to university in Britian and Prince Albert (later George VI) was best man at his wedding. So obviously he's close to the royal house and has some affirnaty with the country. But he's obviously in charge of Yugoslavia in this episode...so... My comment was meant to be a little tongue in cheek. I imagine George VI probably wanted to be able to help his personal friend but Britain was strapped to the limit and it wasn't really George's decision to make anyways.

Astrid changed the set a little bit and I moved some stuff out of the studio so that I had more place and could use a longer lens, with the new lighting I could go down to the lowest ISO setting, that way I could also take the shutter down yet another step. The combination of these two measures leads to more precise focus and less digital grain, which is why Indy looks 'crisper' - the focal length also makes the background slightly out of focus and this helps when we compress for KZbin as the h.264 compressor has slightly less detail to fuss with. You can thank COVID-19 for this as it was because of Indy's forced longer stay that we had time to experiment a little.

Zadar was never in Yugoslavia or Croatia (not existing as independent state since 11. century) until 1945. Maribor was a town in Germay during WWII. In fact, having 50-50% agreement about influence in post/war Yugoslavia (Churchill - Stalin) Britains were bombing only the towns in Eastern part ("soviet zone") of Yugoslavia (in fact in Serbia), and Italian and German towns on the West - Croatia

You know what you guys are missing on your WWII set? A Console floor standing Short wave radio. We are currently in 1941 and I think a short wave radio would be an amazing addition to the WWII setting. I don't know where it could be placed on the set. There are tabletop short wave radios but a floor model would just make your set more authentic, in my opinion. I don't know if anyone has suggested this before. I certainly don't mean to tell you how to "do" your job. You guys are awesome; keep doing what you're doing.

Please specify what was offered to Yugoslavia by Germany. Apparently German generals were upset with Hitler granting Yugoslavia almost same status as Switzerland? If that is true, Brits definitely organized coup as Yugoslavs had no reason to go against Goliath.

Thanks Indy and team for another informative episode . I don't know much about this episodes topic but . From my reading MI 5 and 6 despised SOE and didn't work with them . ( well) I do think they betrayed SOE agents in France and the Netherlands to the NAZIs .. but as far as I can tell ..no Englishmen.( That is a specific term.) I've ranted on this before.. I really would like to see your team try to include what Allied (Usually British) Intel knew from ULTRA and their own interpretations . This "unknown" info was surly important to many decisions. I have never seen any history of WW2 try to include this in day to day events as it must have then.

Oh for sure! You guys have always done a good job with the camerawork and set blocking, but I think it really comes together here. The framing altogether is excellent, and gives Indy a bit more... gravitas? I’m not quite sure how to describe it, but the angle makes it feel like the viewer is just on the other side of that desk with him. Especially as the camera is at his eye level. Astrid changed the set a little bit and I moved some stuff out of the studio so that I had more place and could use a longer lens, with the new lighting I could go down to the lowest ISO setting, that way I could also take the shutter down yet another step. The combination of these two measures leads to more precise focus and less digital grain, which is why Indy looks 'crisper' - the focal length also makes the background slightly out of focus and this helps when we compress for KZbin as the h.264 compressor has slightly less detail to fuss with. You can thank COVID-19 for this as it was because of Indy's forced longer stay that we had time to experiment a little.

German truces? It was more like first indirect (through Nedic, than Italy and even Independent State of Croatia) and than direct alliance with Germany, with few and local episodes of actual clashes with Germans without any significance for Allied eforts.

Yes they did. The Nazis were Yugoslavia's open enemies and that's cool because you know what to expect. But the allies (British and French) betrayed Yugoslavia forgeting Serbian merits in the great war. I don't refer to this coup because Yugoslavia did't belong with the axis, but rather to agreeing with Tito's seizing the power after the war. Even though the royal family are cousins with the British royal family, they just didn't care and let the communists take over. Plus during the 90's EU had its role in heightening the internal conflicts by secretly supporting the extreme separatistic parties and pushing this beautiful country into pandemonium. So I always respect my enemies more than the enemies who pretend to be my friends and british policy was everything but good spirited towards Yugoslavia.

Glad that you mentioned the British aim to disrupt German oil supplies from Romania. The Germans essentially invaded Greece simply because they could not take the risk of the RAF bombing these oilfields when the Soviet oil supplies were on the verge of drying up with Barbarossa. Some say that if the right wing nationalist PM Metaxas had remained alive, Greece would have negotiated a more neutral stance throughout WWII. As it was his successor was more easily influenced by British meddling in the region. Frankly, Churchill's idea of a grand Turkish/Greek/Yugoslavian alliance against the Germans was amongst his more delusional proposals.

Point taken but can you really expect Germany to just accept that Britain is in fact meddling in Yugoslavia and then there is in fact a coup? It would be irresponsible to just assume Yugoslavia is going to remain neutral. Counterfactually if Britain had not been meddling in Yugoslavia at all, then perhaps a reasonable German response could have been to ignore Yugoslavia and expect them to remain staunchly neutral. British meddling, directly or indirectly, put Germany in a position where they had to secure the region against British interference (similar to Norway).

The Yugoslav ethnic situation was so complicated that it would have made no difference if the British were involved in the coup or not. The Croats and the Serbs would take either Germany's or UK's side and the hatred between them would reach boiling point.

It was more about the competing political elites in Belgrade and Zagreb than the peoples themselves. The population was extremely poor and wary of another devastating war, not willing to give in. Anti-Tripartite Pact protests broke out in all major cities and towns across Yugoslavia on 27 March, the largest of them being the one in the country's capital.

Just wondering, I know this is REALLY far off but in 1943-44, when you cover the Bengal Famine, can you make sure to look into detail about it rather than a cursory glance? I am Indian myself but too often do Neo-Nazis, tankies, and or Indian political pundits utilise it to arrive at the false conclusion of Churchill being at fault. As a historian your duty is to project the facts about the past, not political correctness. You can see on the internet or in literature how the real coat of arms looked like (I am aware the it can trigger some negative reactions from some members of the public, but we can not change history). Second about the coup ,the protesters weren't against the royal government, they were only against joining the axis (People didn't want to be allies with their enemies from ww1 who did atrocities) . The royal house was still seen as a factor of stability and unity so they just replaced prince Paul Karađorđević with the young at that moment king Peter II Karađorđević. My father was in the Royal Navy as coxswain of a Motor Gun Boat No 659 and fought along the Yugoslavian coast raiding German supply craft. He fought alongside US crews in PT boats as they had superior radar. He also supported Tito's Partisans. Churchill figured they were better allies than the government would love to see you look at this element of the war in this area.
