In my grandma's village one day SS came to get all blonde, blue-eyed small girls (she was about 8). But one day before that the residing Wehrmacht officer alarmed unofficially school and the whole village so that all girls "disappeared" for a few days. He probably died on the East front. Thanks to him a lot of little polish girls were saved from beeing (probably) nazi incubators.

@@christophercarlone9945 this reminds me of the story why I deleted my facebook account after I replied to a comment under a post that listed several roles of an actor. One of the roles the actor played was Adolf Hitler. The comment I replied to said "Interesting, I've never heard of any of those." Obviously the comment meant to say he had never heard of that actor playing any of these roles, but due to the wording I jokingly replied "well you should at least have heard of Hitler". My reply got auto deleted and I was banned from commenting for 3 days. I could understand this if my comment could be taken as advertising or praising nazi ideology or figgures if taken out of context, but taking it wihtout any irony or sarcasm, just as a serious statement, I do think people should have heard of Hitler, as in they should be knowledgable about the past - or in short, never forget. So I applied for my comment to be evaluated by a human. It was concluded that my comment should stay deleted, and my ban was upheald. I don't want anything to do with a company that openly opposes spreading awareness of history (because that's how I am taking this), so I deleted my facebook account for good.

One of the most insane escape stories involved a man named Peter Julien Ortiz. A former French Foreign Legionairre & a US Marine Corps officer of mixed French and American ancestry, he was parachuted into German occupied France as part of a multi-national team of intelligence operatives coordinating with the local resistance. While performing that task four British RAF airmen bailed out of a stricken aircraft in his team's area of operations and they were tasked with recovering the crew and smuggling them safely to the Spanish border. Despite the fact that by then Ortiz had been operating with the resistance for some time and the Gestapo was not only aware of his existence but actively hunting him (in part because he'd wear an Allied military uniform openly while accompanying the maquis on ambushes or sabotage missions, believing it raised their morale) , he strolled into a German motor pool with a perloined uniform and pass and used the Gestapo's own cars to smuggle the airmen safely into Spain. That also wasn't first brush with an escape during the Second World War. While still serving with the Foreign Legion he had himself been wounded and captured during the fall of France in 1940, but by 1941 managed to escape captivity and made his way to Lisbon, and from there to the United States. He arrived in the US on December 8th, 1941 - the day after Pearl Harbor, and promptly joined the US Marines, who recommended him for service with the Office of Strategic Services because of his background and command of French, Arabic, and German..the last two learned while serving with the Legion in North Africa and while a captive following the fall of France.

Some of them joined the Allied air forces. Wing commander, Kaj birksted became a double ace and was a key figure in creating the new danish Air Force after the war. Another is Kjeld rønhof, whom also flew for the RAF and had a brother in Denmark that was a resistance fighter. There were also two other guys who were pilots in the danish Air Force before the war, whom didn’t want to live under the german occupation, so they stole a plane and flew to England, where they were captured initially though to be spies. But got released when they said they wanted to join the raf and kill germans ( or something like that )

Reminds me of one of my favorite TV personalities of my childhood: German TV host wiht th name of Hans Rosenthal. He did not escape from german occupied territory, but from forced labour and certain death. Born in germany in the 1920's and jewish, both his parents had died of illnesses shortly before WW2. His brother got deported to a deathcamp relatively early, while he was sent to do forced labour in berlin. After 3 years of surviving forced labour as a teenager at age 18 he was able to escape the forced labour and 3 non jewish women hid him in a small allotment (i hope that's the correct engish term for it). One of the ladies /the only one who actually had know him from before the war, as she knew his mother) died in 1944, and the other two kept him hidden and shared the little food they had with him. He and these two ladies were able to survive the war, and eventually became TV host and regissuer and game inventor. I have seen an interview of him long ago where he described the nervwrecking 2 years of hiding and his thankfullness towards the ladies who risked their lives to help him.

Worked in elderly care in Sweden. One of our patients was a gentleman who served on the Norwegian border. They had a border crossing with a narrow bridge, if I understood correctly it was a small stream . The Germans had a little guardhouse by the water and some soldiers on their side, and the Swedes a group on theirs. One afternoon witnessed the now nearly 100-year-old man follow. "I saw two young Norwegians sneaking along the river to the building by the water. It was a little separated from the Germans, could be an outhouse. They rush up and drive it into the water! Then throw themselves across the river into svergie and disappears into the forest. The Germans stood completely stunned and just pointed at the small building that floated down the river. We on our side giggled and waved to the Germans who laughed on their side. A very strange experience"

One interesting case of escape places is the Jewish cemetery of Geneva, in Switzerland. Because of a local law forbidding religious cemeteries, the Jewish cemetery of Geneva is built on a plot of land in France, adjacent to Switzerland. The entrance to the cemetery is in Switzerland but the cemetery itself is in France. Because of this peculiar situation, there was there a hole in the border and thousands of Jewish refugees managed to flee France by joining funerals and then getting lost in the crowd which came for the funeral, thereby avoiding both German and Swiss border police.

But suddenly the situation definitely got a little awkward, since the ss officers were offended by the state of the ship of burial, so they were clearly mocking the people working on the site, and asked rather contemptuous, what kind of piss poor ship was that supposed to be. My grandfather just answered "the same ships we used 800 years ago to sail over and beat them in". Our channel survives on support from our viewers and our sponsors. And, if there's a game we support then we might also try and collaborate with them here. It's something we do because we're people, we have interests, we like video games, and if we can work together on historical content like this then all the better. I hope you'll consider how much content we've produced and how much it costs to create such content every week. We're a small team and crossovers like this help keep us going.

People living under any authoritarian or totalitarian regime have essentially three options for life. Collaboration, resistance or coexistence. Most of people choose the latter.

Your attempt to tie this sort of story to a advertisement for a video game strike me as being in 'questionable' taste that being said I really appreciate your Crimes against Humanity series. Thank you.

From my understand they've been struggling with KZbin demonetization issues so having to look for sponsorships is one way of keeping the channel going. I'm actually interested in this game as it's not the typical unrealistic first person shoot 'em up and can introduce a younger generation to this less looked at aspect of the war.
@andrewswift27272 жыл бұрын
I appreciate and respect what you're saying but I really don't think video game ads should be a part of any discussion of the Holocaust. It's disrespectful to the memories of the victims to suggest that you can gain an understanding of what they went through by playing a game. To be clear I have NO problem with the game itself only with its use as a product placement ad in a video about the Holocaust. Have a great day.

@@WorldWarTwo I see that, but there are other, not-in-use, German flags they could have used. How about the black, white and red stripes of the German Empire? It seems to me to be unforgiveable to link the Germans of WW2 to modern-day Germany.

SPOILER About 500 Soviet POWs, mostly officers, will attempt to escape from Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria in February 1945. Most will manage to get out of the camp itself but will fall prey to gangs of locals, often Volkssturm militia or Hitler Youth, mobilised to catch them and kill them on sight. Sometimes their bodies were left piled up on street corners in villages. Eleven are known to have survived, in the case of some of them, an Austrian farmer hid them in the loft of his barn. I read an account by one survivor - he and others were starving when they broke out and they found a milk churn by the side of a road outside a farmstead. Despite it being ice cold they managed to open the milk churn and drink from it.
