You are absolutely right. Peter was indeed, a powerful and intelligent wizard. The phrase: "Silent water, penetrates deeply" fits him perfectly. Always quiet, always appears to be coward, but he wasn't, it was just a show. Sure he wasn't the wisest, most powerful, most talented, and most brave in the bunch, but he was all of that. But if you were reading what I wrote, he was team Voldemort from the start, proven in the POA book. Still, if he looked, in the Mirror Of Erised, after he betrayed his friends, I think he would see himself, with all 3 of his friends, and Lily also, all alive and happy together. I think he had regret after he did so. He had regret, in the last moment of his life, and he knew what it means if he would feel regret, he knew the silver hand was bewitched, yet he truly felt regret, truly died for Harry, the one who saved him, proving he was in the correct house. Peter couldn't fool the sorting hat, the sorting hat greatly thought, if to put him in Gryffindor/Slytherin. Peter probably in his heart, asked for been sorted into Gryffindor, that's why he was a Gryffindor. Also, it takes courage to be a spy, something could have gone wrong easily.

The thing that made Peter so dangerous is how easily to underestimate him, despite his feats. Both in canon as in the fandom, people constantly underestimate his power, his cunning and most of all, his extreme ruthless, while a lot of people (myself included for a lot of years) that his weak magical prowess, his low talent and his cowardice are all INFORMED traits. With his magical prowess, we have clear signs that he is more powerful than anyone thought him to be, but we ratherly consider the possibility that other traits of him might also be just a ruse. We think he is a coward and only in it for self-preservation, because that is what the characters tell us about him. Not because of what we actually see of him. We never really see him exhibit those characteristics in fair situations... We are led to believe that he joint the ranks of Voldemort out of fear for the Dark Lord alone but the only "confession" to this is spoonfed to him by Sirius and Remus. They surmissed that he did it out of cowardice and he wasn't really in a position that it was in his best interest to deny this or tell them anything else. He was unarmed and had no way of defending himself, so being all ballsy with them at the moment or saying anything but what they were so eager to believe already, wouldn't have been bravery, it would have been insanity. So, he played along and did everything that would prolong his survival until he had an opportunity to escape. But anything else he did, requires a lot of bravery, cold-bloodedness and nerves of steel. He was a double agent for Voldemort within the Order of the Phoenix, probably responsible for their high body count during the First Wizarding War of the UK (how did the Death Eaters have such an easy time identifying Order members, finding them and ending them... my money is on Peter), he hid his masters wand and stayed in the country awaiting his return until it was clear to him, it wasn't really going to happen and yes, he became a bit laidback and lazy, forsaken his duties a bit before the rude awakening that he still had some mortal enemies. But he could just as easily have fled the country, never to return and nobody would have been any the wiser. And from the moment he rejoined Voldemort he did some very disturbing things that still require bravery and a lot of willpower and clearly was interested in some very glorious and potentional dangerous jobs in the Death Eater Order. As much was said by Snape. If he really was the coward we always paint him as, he would have loved the cushy job of being Snape's housekeeper. But he wanted more exciting jobs, one he later actually got when he was the prison warden for Voldemort's special prisoners. Safe as that job seems, any screw-up would have been a death sentence. If Voldemort knew about any escapees, it wouldn't be his hand that ended his life. And that's the dangerous part about Peter, he appeared like he wanted to appear, even in a meta sense...

I absolutely adore how Harry's character was written throughout the series but I think that Harry's biggest mistake was to stop Lupin and Sirius from killing Wormtail inside the Shrieking Shack. All the events of GoF unfolded just because they let Wormtail get away. Of course you might say that Voldemort would have found another way to come back but I'm sure that without Wormtail alive, Cedric Diggory's life could have been spared.

The events of GoF with Barty Crouch Jr under the disguise would have still folded out exactly like we know. This would have given Harry and Cedric plenty of time to realise that they were in the wrong place and they would have grabbed the Portkey together to return back to Hogwarts. Barty Crouch Jr couldn't just apparate to the graveyard since he was supposed to stand guard aroumd the maze and he would have blown his cover straight away. That's part of why I think Wormtail makes for such a unique villain. There are MANY different reprehensible personality traits which, if left unchecked, can cause a good or at least ok person to turn evil. Plenty of villains throughout fiction show how qualities like greed, vindictiveness, and a lust for power can turn a person evil. Peter Pettigrew stands out as being one of the only villains I can think of who shows how cowardice can turn a person evil (Another being Carter Burke from 'Aliens,' but I think Wormtail shows it a little better). Pretty much everything he does, particularly his most evil acts, are done out of cowardice and letting his fear take the wheel in his decision- making processes. I can still recall in 'Deathly Hallows,' as Pettigrew is dying, one of the last ways he is described is "Voldemort's most cowardly follower." I could not think of a more perfect description of him to tag him with in his final moments. It would make a fitting epitaph for his tombstone.

Anyone else not know Nicolas flamel was supposedly a real person? I only just found this out because today at work, going through books, I found a few in a series from author Michael Scott, that was fiction about magic and sorcery, specifically about “the immortal Nicolas flamel” so naturally I had to look online to see if it was maybe fan fiction of the Harry Potter wizarding world. And I found out both stories were based on a real person. Or, atleast a myth of a person. Who was an alchemist and thought to have found a sorcerer stone. Which is neat. Paused this so I could put down my theory and see if it matches you. My theory of why Peter was so dangerous is because he was underestimated by everyone. No one saw him coming. No one saw how strong a wizard he was and how much hate he felt. Remember, just like the other Marauders, he succeeded in becoming an animagus without the help of a teacher. Becoming an animagus is considered THE most difficult aspect of transfiging magic and yet he did it and did so very young. Yet, even though his friends knew this, they STILL underestimated him.

@lynnerose78912 жыл бұрын
Again I firmly disagree with this theory on multiple levels. Being “known” as a coward is a cop out and a tired crutch used by the writer. Peter was probably one of the bravest characters in the entire book series tbh. Animagus by 15, solely for Remus’ benefit. Such a powerful one that he remained in animal form for over a decade-in a house of pureblooded wizards who were the relatives of two members of the OOTP and would’ve murdered him on the spot. Literally served as the very first double agent in the wizarding world. Was so good at it he was not ever caught and set up another wizard for the murder of 13 ppl ON THE FLY. Also, his betrayal of the Potters was very heavily hinted at either he did that or his entire family would be murdered-so he saved his own family from being murdered-and he was clearly targeted by Voldemort based upon SNAPE’s recommendation. Next, he was so underrated yet frankly he was probably one of the most powerful wizards ever. His knowledge was immense. Transfiguration, Charms, Dark Arts, Unforgivable Curses, Potions, Occlumency (note that he never betrayed his thoughts to Dumbledore or the Potters despite being in all their presence almost daily for a year, so they never could arrive in time to save the Potters despite SNAPE’s warning-which was pretty laughable when you consider that he was the one who probably singled out Peter to Voldemort and Snape had absolutely no intention of saving Harry or James, either. He was dangerous because he was underestimated. Rowling did his character no justice, either.
@cjg87632 жыл бұрын
He was not unintelligent and he was not lacking in magical strength but he was also a coward. He did everything he did out of fear and felt need for protection by those who he felt could give it to him. Voldemort himself calls out Wormtail on this very matter. The conversation in the Shrieking Shack towards the end of PoA also shows off his cowardice in spectacular fashion. Sirius would have chosen death to betraying his friends. Peter didn't think twice about betraying them. He saw Voldemort rising and thought he better get in on it rather than resist. If he was truly brave he would not have done the things that he did.

I'm not going to challenge what you put forward here but I feel like I must qualify it some. You see, in fiction, we hear, even more than in RL, that serial killers are highly clever, massively intelligent cold beings. Kind of like with the assertion - the largely correct assertion - that Wormtail was powerful, skilled and dangerous. Yet in both instances I have to gainsay this somewhat. If the only big thing in your life is the torment and death of others or in Peter's case, your own survival, if that is all you really focus on, then, with a decent brain in your skull, you will excel at these things as surely as you would any better practice or concern. This is not to say the antagonist in either case would be nothing otherwise, but the obsessive nature of their quest and the focus it provides is the only thing between them and moments like Peter begging for his life at the Shack. This is not to dismiss, but again, only to qualify what can be a blanket statement about capabilities. Dark Note: I don't know how the Prewett Twins died in detail, but I do have to wonder if they fell courtesy of info Wormtail provided to Voldemort's forces. If this were so, imagine how Molly would feel knowing she put this monster up for over a decade near her children, nephews and niece of two great men they would never really know as adults because of this skulker in her Barrow.

Peter pettigrew is the epitome of “it is always the quiet ones”. Behind the scenes, he crafted each plan meticulously. I agree that is what makes him dangerous because you never know what he is hiding. He hid for 12 years while still being able to trade secrets with Voldemort. It took bravery to even go to Voldemort but for a cowardly reason. It was brave to even go to the person that could have killed him in one shot, but betraying your friends to stay safe is cowardly and selfish. So I can see a mix of Gryffindor and Slytherin because of these traits.

But why they’d choose him over literally anyone else; makes even less sense. Hell I’d trust snape with the secret before him 😂. Snape, that’s another thing. JKR clearly didn’t have plans for him to become who he did- in the first book… he actively interfered with Voldemort obtaining the stone.. how would Voldemort believe snape was on his side?! Let alone one of his most trusted and valued followers. Continuity in this series definitely sucks. But you’d think when making the films she’d be able to fix those issues. Remus Lupin: You sold James and Lily to Voldemort, didn't you? Peter Pettigrew: I didn't mean to! The Dark Lord, you have no idea the weapons he possesses. Peter's service to Voldemort may well have begun with torture and under threat of death. Seen as weak and easy to exploit, sentiments shared among his own friends, he was a perfect target out of all the members from The Order of the Phoenix. Voldemort knew the Order existed and even some of its members. It was on it's last legs and having Peter on the inside was a strategic move to finish the Order off for good. Peter Pettigrew was a coward and had a strong sense of self-preservation, a very Slytherin trait. This direct manipulation as a reason for his betrayal is rarely explored. Yet it is plausible. Peter acted out of fear, and Voldemort made sure Pettigrew feared him over anything else. And he returned to Voldemort out of fear as well. People who knew of his betrayal were alive and were out to kill him. There was no option of escaping as it was a matter of time before Sirius and Remus caught up to him, or death eaters come to tie up loose ends. Even if he attempted to integrate into the muggle world he would likely die as a vagrant in the streets. Peter Pettigrew had nowhere else to go. Peter Pettigrew died in the end. Strangled by the "gifted" hand for betraying Lord Voldemort. He did express remorse, and only acted on a wizard's life debt to save Harry but also knew full well he'd be killed for it. Peter reached a point where he was done and didn't fear death anymore. Death presented itself as his only choice to escape the miserable tragedy of his life. He probably welcomed it. Side note about the video. The sound levels for your narration are very low, had to max the volume to hear you consistently.
