As always super informative video. I do not use these sort of bikes any more and use ones with the internal gears and breaks like the shimano Nexus 7. I think I see one on your bench? Can you do a video some time on these systems both gears and the roller breaks that I have and what I should look out for and adjustments etc. They are all the rage here in the other side of the world especially mainland Europe. If you could do something that would be super. Again super to see you back and thank you for all the help with building wheels.

Hi PMA, Thanks for saying so… it takes quite a bit of work to get all the detailed info in. Nevertheless, it is my pleasure! I use internal geared hubs on my town bikes in London, one of which is Nexus 7. That is an Alfine 8 on my bench that I stripped and re-built, but the guy had really damaged it inside and it needed replacing with a new one as the bits he’d broke weren’t replaceable. I may be the only 5 star Sturmey Archer approved mechanic still alive based on how old the other guys were when I did the training. I’m game to strip them down and re-build them given the necessity. It is actually in my head as a video to do at some point because they can seem quite daunting to set up, adjust and also get the wheel in and out. I do know a really good trick to make a fiddly horrible job quite easy and much less dangerous. It’s not high on my list at the moment as I have to a load of other ones to get me up in the rankings on KZbin. I have a few in the bank that are road bike related and a few more to do which are wheel building related… master class top tips if you will. So hopefully they will help you out even more with the wheel building and truing in the future. Assuming you mean the tension was too high for the strength of the rim when you say it pulled through, there are spoke nipple seat washers that can be used to beef that part of the construction up. I don’t use them often and usually just to change spoke lengths by 1mm if the correct ones aren’t available, though I do use them for rims without eyelets for bigger more powerful riders. I use DT Swiss or Sapim ones depending on the application. Don’t forget you will need to have spokes 1mm longer than the calculation or they can be used if they are 1mm too long. The only downside is you will make the wheel stronger and more durable. Not in an accident though! I love building wheels as it is very rewarding and a place/time when I relax in the method and the final result. Keep going and enjoying it. Thanks again for your gratitude and airing it. Hope to see you again soon…

@@bicycleguru Hi again and thank you for a super reply. Because I do not have a car I do a lot of miles and it is pure enjoyment. An average day cycling for me would be 20miles upward every day. Wheels were always a worrying weak point to all my cycling as there is simply no one near that will work on them like you do. I am a former fitter and electrician so very much in maintaining my bike or bikes. I now have the two Dutch built bikes now and they are a super well built bikes with the internal hub shimano gears. My every day bike is a 7 and the other is an 8. I am really super happy with both. I had a bad jam up on the 7 with a bungy chord and it strained the 7 speed and would not change properly. I began to strip down and found a broken spring within. With a lot of searching I found a reconditioned internal set in Germany and I bought two of him and they work super and was back on the road. I would love a recommendation from you on best way to maintain these gear systems. I remember from younger years having a bike with a Sturmey Archer 4 which I loved as it was all the gears I needed and was so easy to maintain by dropping in the odd drop of oil in it every week. With the shimano systems no such lubing system is easily done. From what I see on line the recommend pulling out hub and dropping in a pot of their oil and letting it soak in and rub some grease on the ball races. I know over time that the oil will leak away. This way work well and I do it once a year. If you have any other tip I would love to hear. On the point of the wheels with all the bikes I have had over the years the wheels have always been a weak point and complete pain. No one near me will touch them at all and I wanted to know how to keep them and maintain them. Your video on the wheel building was a life saver as you explained all all the way through. I bought myself a stand and a tension gauge and now I can build them from start to finish and like you say it is so so rewarding. I have bought spare rims and spokes for my new bikes now. I do not expect many problems with them now as you have shown me how to keep them maintained now. I just want to ask your advice on one small thing seeing that I have the tension gauge. The wheels with the gears use a 3mm spoke and they are using a 700c rim 36hole. I have set them at a tension of just slightly over 25 for them all. This is going as far as I can make out on the data sheet that came with the tension gauge. It does not really cover a 3mm spoke the highest it goes to is 2.5mm. I just want to ask you what would you recommend my tension be. 25 seems to be working well so far. But just would like you thoughts on it. I just want to point out from getting these two Dutch bikes I never really knew the benifits of the chain guards. Both have them and boy do they save chain and keep and maintain the lube too. Any bike that I had in the past I would be changing the stretched chain every two months or so. I have both bikes over a year now and the chain has not stretched at all. So really big fan of the chain covers big time. Again just want to say love your videos and thank you so so much for teaching me the science of the wheel.
