Strut mount noise and symptoms Peugeot 308
Symptoms of a worn strut mount in a Peugeot 308 SW / Estate. There are many possible reasons for knocking or rattle sounds in your car. This video may help you find, or at least rule out one possibility. Similar sounds may include things like worn ball Joints, worn stabilizer bar linkages, worn stabilizer bar bushes, loose brake calipers, worn tie rod ends, just to name a few.

Yup, thats the sound on my car. First time in my 20 years of driving having such and its been driving me nuts trying to work it out.

Yes, I'm getting the exact noise. Misdiagnosed and changed out my control arm bushings.

Mine just started and it only makes noise going super slow over sudden bumps or backing out slowly and while turning all the way the spring would get stuck and when straightening out the spring would let go and make a loud metal spring noise lol

I have a very annoying slight rattle knocking from the front suspension of my Partner Tepee 2015 when driving slow speed 20-40 mph over roads with poor surfaces. It seems to be coming from both sides of the front of the car. I replaced the ARB drop links, the strut top mounts and the main top engine mount at the cam belt end of the engine about 18 months ago. The rattling knocking noise briefly became a lot less but now it's back, well it never quite went away. I read some where that it can also be loose steering rack mounts. Frankly it defeats me. I took it to a Peugeot dealer but they wanted 120 to even look at it. Eventually they did for free after I argued with them. The dealer I bought it from denied there was anything wrong with the suspension as they just wanted to fob me off hoping I would give up which I largely have but now the knocking is back big time and it is hacking me off. Any thoughts on what it could be? I read this model generally has a bad rep with a rattly front suspension. It does my head in. I drove a Ford Transit 350 van yesterday for a 300 miles round trip and it's suspension felt as it should, taught and silent. My partner has only covered 36k miles, 23k when I bought it 3 years ago. For all these miles I have put up with a rattly suspension. It passes the MOT fine which is frustrating.

Hey there, that sounds frustrating. Took me quite a while to work out where this sound was coming from, I feel your pain. You sure it’s coming from both sides? Checked your sway bar bushings? Maybe check out the brakes, does the knocking continue when braking slightly? Or accelerating? Shortly after I bought my 308 I had an annoying rattle which turned out to be loose caliper bolts. Either they weren't torqued down correctly, or somehow they managed to loosen themselves over time. Either way, was an easy fix. Perhaps a bad strut? Is there any play in the strut rod? Surprising for such low mileage... Good luck with it mate.

​@@Justfixitmate Thanks for your reply. Yes it is very frustrating. Doesn't seem to be affected by acceleration or slowing. Definitely both sides. When I replaced the top mounts with new ones I checked the shock absorbers struts themselves and they were both fine. The rattle sounds like a dull knocking inside an upturned bucket. Doesn't sound sharp or metallic although it could be. Nothing is loose or not done up properly when I replaced the top mounts and ARB links all looked pretty new and in good condition down below. The ball joints on the suspension arms all seem fine as are the steering rack track rod arms. All tight. I think I replaced the steering rack track rod ball joints when I did the ARB links and top mounts Can't remember. In any case I don't think it is them as there is no play in the steering. Watching your video I am thinking it could be roll bar bushes although the knock rattle definitely seems to be coming from higher up. I don't really want to be messing around with changing these as I changed roll bar bushes on a 205 and a Fiat Bravo years ago and on both occasions it was a pig of a job owing to the tension on the roll bar needed to mount it. The Partner one is going to be significant! My other thought as I said is steering rack mounts which if mounted other side of the bulkhead would put it in the place where I think the knocking is coming from although when I looked previously it seemed pretty solid. It definitely feels like suspension top mounts again. I must have driven around 6-7k miles maybe 8k since I last replaced them. Not good. I do think the way the top mounts of the struts are secured to the inner wing of the body with just the single large central nut on the shaft of the shock absorber is rubbish. This means any vibrations through the strut shaft as the shock absorber extends or contracts could cause the top of the strut to move in the hole and the forces cause it to create as light knocking if not tightened VERY TIGHT. So when the vehicle is driven over bad surfaces the top of the strut can rattle in the hole even though there are rubbers supposed to cushion against this. An utterly crap design. I was thinking about trying to fit different top mounts which either have 3 or 4 studs on their top plate to secure through holes in the top of the inner wing which is what all other cars I have owned have had. It is a far better set up. I just need to find top mounts that would fit the springs and have securing studs then drill holes around the aperture of the inner wing to take them. Hopefully this would solve the problem. I have found this seems to be a common problem with Peugeot Partners and possibly Citroen Berlingos. At the moment it isn't too bad. It's got worse the last month. It has an MOT shortly and hopefully it gets through this. Even if it were to fail on this rattle knock as something would be worn or loose, at least I would get to know what the cause could be and hopefully fix it although as I say it has passed previous MOTs with no problems. It's really infuriating. Will probably get it MOT'd this coming week as it is up at the end of the month. Will let you know how I get on. Thanks again for replying.

@@alexmorgan3435 Good luck with the MOT - maybe they find the issue. It does sound like it might be strut mount related. I did replace the rubber coated washer things under the bolt at the top when I did mine, although the old ones did look fine. Also used an impact driver to tighten them down. I don't think you'd have any chance of torquing them down enough any other way. I reckon the top mount design isn’t up to the task in the 308 which is a pretty heavy car. Same design on my C4, many more ks has no issues. Maybe your top mounts have failed again - did you use OEM parts?

Normally a rattle is drop links on the anti roll bar. Something I find myself changing every 2 years on all cars I have owned. If the sound is more dulled and rapid, compared to what we hear in the video which is a very metallic sound. Roll Bar Links thankfully are cheep and usually an easy home fix. Normally if you can get them in a position where there is no tension you can feel for slack, otherwise just loosening one off and testing the ball joints is usually pretty easy. If they're stiff, they're good. Like a joystick on an XBox controller wiggling everywhere = worn out.

Hi there mate im not sure if you've cured this yet But I've just had a taxi in with a similar issue it tends to do it more when the engine is laboured, turned out to be the OSF outer CV joint. Hope this helps

My 308 has the same knocking sound yours has from the same place. Does it come with a high pitched squeaking noise too?

Yep, occasional squeaky rubbing like sound which didn't seem to happen all the time. I only replaced the left side, now the right side has started and it seems to make the 'squeaking noise' more than the left side did. Might take a video of it.

@@Justfixitmate Thanks Dan. Had this driving me insane for a couple months. Couldn’t see anything obvious in the suspension and as it sounds like it’s behind the dash from the drivers side I put it down to being French.

@@ChrisBaitson Yep that's it, sounds like it comes from the dash. Took me quite some time to work out what it was. Seems to be a common thing however. Mine's got about 150k on it if that's comparable to yours. You only need to replace the top mount and can swap over the bearings/bushings etc. They're relatively inexpensive.

My C4 hasn't had this issue despite being much older with many more kms. I suspect, at least with the 308, water must make its way into that spot resulting is rust/corrosion/deterioration.
