I think the key, for any guitar player regardless of skill level, is develop a tone that you like. Figure out how to get the sound in your head to come out of your amp. Sometimes that's using a "transparent" overdrive, sometimes it's not. There's no right or wrong effect.
@kwin454 жыл бұрын
...There’s no ‘right or wrong’, but too much distortion and having a live amp on stage is often deemed ‘from the devil’, it seems. {I don’t make the rules}

"Heightens the frequency of the signal..." No, increasing frequency increases the pitch of the tone. In short, overdrive/distortion pedals basically boost a signal so much, it distorts, which basically adds more frequencies... From there, certain circuitry regulates the volume of the distorted signal. The Morning Glory goes for $244... And the pedal shown is a JHS Double Barrel. Not sure if that's just an editing mistake or what... Good "affordable" OD pedals run from $60ish to around $120. Your tone is really thin and brittle. Again, maybe editing? "It takes a mono signal and widens it to give it a stereo feel." Also no, though I can see how you'd get there... Reverb takes your signal and delays it, yes, like a delay pedal, but instead of a slower response (eg. 500ms), you get an instantaneous response, which makes it sound like you're playing in a large room (depending on your settings). I'm only saying all of this for the sake of the beginners watching this video...

Haha yeah "worship music" never knew it was a thing. Just copy U2 and then call it worship? They just need the dotted 8 effect and they'll be a carbon copy. Edit: Haha just after I posted this comment he mentioned the dotted 8 effect.
@retroislandboy97085 жыл бұрын
Edge made the dotted 8 delay popular....and all "worship music" incorporates that sound at some point. so weather or not all worship bands copy U2 ...only they know that....but id say it did originate from U2. but it still sounds cool regardless . i use it myself :)
@colewilsonishot8 жыл бұрын
Transparent overdrive doesn't give any "heightening" of any frequency. What it is doing is giving you that gritty overdrive sound while not coloring the tone that you have going on. Example, when you engage a tubescreamer type overdrive it adds some mid frequencies and compression. Which pushes that specific type of sound into your amp changing either only a little or a lot of your original tone. Transparent, In theory, will only add grit, and not any unwanted changes like scooping or boosting mids etc. He is pretty much spot on when it comes to the basics of delay, you get copy of what you're playing at specific points in time depending on how your pedal (or rack unit of you're old school) is set up/programmed. As for the reverb section, I get what he's saying. Reverb does/can give your signal a more "stereo" feel, but unless you're running an actual stereo rig (which everyone should from time to time... Its AWESOME) it is not stereo. What reverb is doing is adding "space"... It's putting your tone/sound or whatever into a specific place or room. It's mimicking the actual reflections of sound waves from your instrument or amp off of the walls of a room, cave, hall etc. and mixing it in to your dry signal to give a faux sense of having your amp mic'd up somewhere it's not. I hope I don't come across as mean or anything, God bless this guy and his team for trying to be helpful and teach the community of worship guitarists. :) and Hey guitar guy.. that's my favorite guitar... can't wait to get my hands on one.. Oh gear.. the money sucking addiction to guitar gear...

I jist came from a worship service [I was the Bass Player...] where we had some beautiful music to worship our God, but the electric gtr-ist, noodles from the start of a chart to the end of it. Thru all of our songs. It sounded like good music with a horn blowing thru it, or a vacuum turned on. He wasn't overly loud and he wasn't consistently playing wrong notes. It was jist lead gtr noodling thru every song. I feel like he dint really kno wut else to play? Seems like to me, that it may be chords, maybe even an octave up and possibly sum melodic answer leads that mirror the vox lines??? Am I maybe on to something? Thx again and thx again... @M3RRIH3W139 жыл бұрын
+ugug888 Well, technically, no, but a stereo sound is a tone thickener because of the spread of the speakers. Reverb makes the sound thicker and more ambient. Similar, not the same, but I got the meaning.
@guitaristwilllane9 жыл бұрын
+ugug888 Also, "overdrives heighten the frequency of the signal going to the amp, and gives it the sound of overdrive tubes" that put me off... XD A lot of the technical explanation is dead wrong. Immediately after he says "We like transparent overdrive because non-transparent overdrives wrap your tone in distortion." The Morning Glory has a mid-hump iirc.
@M3RRIH3W139 жыл бұрын
***** Would you say delay and reverb are modulated sounds? They take a straight signal and fatten them up. Reverb has tails, delay has tails. Delay changes a standard tone by adding a second or an analog tone by adding to the mix. Reverb adds a different tone that is adjusted by the mix. Lighten up, he may have misspoke, but there are similarities. Haven't you ever misspoke?

@elijahw19319 жыл бұрын
+Joe Cook The JHS doesn't seem worth the money to me, their 808/Morning Glory circuits aren't THAT much better than the much cheaper options available. $315 for a Double Barrel, or $180ish for a TS9 and a Mooer Blues Crab (which is a Bluesbreaker clone, like the Morning Glory) or a Soul Food if you want a different flavor of dynamic overdrive. I'm not saying the JHS is bad by any means, just that I'm never going to see it as being worth $300

Just ran across this video - nice job describing and sampling. Thought I'd throw in 2¢ for electric-acoustic guitars. They almost always have to be amped to get any volume and pick up more tone and resonance - so they can benefit from a little 'attitude', too. LoL. I've actually used a slight phase for a few slower worship songs. Worked well🤷🏻♂️🎶😊

I play these small churches, 100 people would be a huge crowd but usually less then half of that. I usually plug a Gibson Les Paul into my (new to me) Fender Tonemaster Twin since it weighs a little over 30 lbs and is easy to pack in and out, plus it has a XLR (and cab sim) out making it easy to run into whatever little PA (if any) they have. Use the reverb if I don't have natural reverb in the building and sometimes my amp tremolo. That's it. Plug in and do it. My other (main) amp is a Fender Princeston Reverb (handwired 64 RI) that I always stuck on a chair and miced if I had to, but usually didn't. I never play with drummers, usually just pianos/organs. Maybe a bass player.

@HopeCommunityWorship9199 жыл бұрын
+fender678910 Thanks for watching. Yes, it depends what the meter is for buying music stuff. It can get pricy for sure buy pro-grade gear, but a good way to look at it is instead of buying an xbox and all with that, it's guitar gear that's bought. $180 will get you a solid Overdrive that can get some transparent gain and cleans. Most pro-grade single pedals will cost less than $200, whether OD, distortion, compression, boost, etc. Go on the Chicago Music Exchange or Reverb.com and check out their "boutique" pedals new and used. You can find some good stuff!

Hello can you help me? I'm from Brazil and I am looking to buy a guitar . I'm between an Epiphone LP Gold top and a Gretsch Electromatic G5426 ( the simplest , the others are very expensive here because our currency is devalued ) . The principle would buy the Gretsch no doubt, by many worshipers use this mark , but when I saw that it is not done in mahogany , but in basswood I discouraged ... I have to test them to play .... What do you recommend?? I play in my church music from Hillsong , Jesus Culture , and other songs that footprint.
@M3RRIH3W139 жыл бұрын
+kakuzunisan Basswood isn't a bad tonewood. The Gretsch is a chambered basswood body, so it has more acoustic-like tone for clean tones. There is a youtube video on the Gretsch and it sounds great, clean and overdrive. An Epiphone is a good guitar, too. They are heavy and thick toned. But, I think the chambered body sounds nice for strumming and rhythm work. Both guitars will do the job, modern guitars are a lot better than the old days. The way you play it is more important. Record yourself, see what you need to improve, do that again. And, Danelectro and Hotone make nice little effects pedals for a budget.
@simonepaula83179 жыл бұрын
+M3RRIH3W13 whats modern guitar you recomend me?? veritas , duesenberg?? If yes , I can't pay for this guitars , they're very expensive in my country
@user-bb3ci3gn7s9 жыл бұрын
As M3RR said, the way you play is the most important. I have an epiphone with basswood, I got it for 129 at guitar center. Two humbuckers and that's it, nothing fancy.... but when I play it...... I find love. I mean the guitar doesn't look all that and it's not all expensive and stuff. But if you truly want tone, this is guitar was amazing. So basswood guitars aren't bad AT ALL lol I love them. But like M3RR said, gretches chamber body might come in handy for strumming. And I know through experience my epiphone is a boss at lead parts lol. Mainly because the tone is superb. But above all, you have to play both, what feels better in your hands, which pickups offer the tone and color of tone you want? What would suit your style of playing? Just research on those things and you'll be happy with your guitar. And remember, don't not look at cheaper guitars, some are awesome, you just never know until you play them :) Take care

+Simone Paula thanks for watching. I have both a duesenberg and veritas. Depending on the model, I'd say they are very different from each other and yes they're extremely expensive. I recommend a Standard Fender Telecaster which you can find for under $1000 easily.

I'm kind of new to music, but last I checked, music is a form of personal expression. If this guy likes the way his instrument sounds than that's all that matters. Non-musicians don't know anything about tone and don't care! If the song sounds relatively close to what they hear on the radio they will never know the difference. Just starting out in music myself, it seems like all tone really is, is a way for musicians that "never made it", to have something to brag about and insult other musicians to make themselves feel better about never making it, or not being able to afford nice stuff! Have a nice day.

The Boss DD-20 or the new Boss DD-500 (comparable to the Timeline( are great pedals for the price. I've used the DD-20 for years on the road and in the studio. Let me know if you have any more questions!

This is good, and usefull as reference, but i think it laks the most important.... How do i get a good tone straigh from my amp, u need a good tone a warm solid tone before to add any kind of FX in to your chain, other wise you only gonna be masking a trash tone with FX which is not a good practice, i think that Hendroffs succes it's just that, he has a solid warm tone even with no FX. Just my opinion, any ways thanks for the video. Blessings for all you guys ;)

why'd he say he's using a morning glory when it showed the jhs double barrel??
@kylebelt8508 жыл бұрын
The Double Barrel has the Morning Glory Circuit in one side and JHS' Tube Screamer circuit in the other.

There's a whole lot of complaining on here about the gear and choice of example material, but seriously, people are just trying to make helpful videos for beginners. It's got a "101" on there for a reason. The guitar industry is saturated with options, so if JHS is not "affordable" for you, even on the used market, then do your homework and find a comparable pedal at your budget. JHS is affordable when you consider the options available to guitarists nowadays. Please excuse this dude for not wasting an additional $1k to buy a cheapo amp, guitar, overdrive, delay and reverb pedal for the sole purpose of making these tutorials, and so that you feel better about how his setup compares to yours. Nice gear definitely makes a difference in the right hands, but so does cheap gear when you're willing to learn the equipment and get the most out of it. People need to cut these guys a break, they're putting themselves out there and actually trying to be helpful - that's more than a lot of us can say, my self included.
@DarthDookie697 жыл бұрын
Maybe his affordable setup should at least be a little more practical and doable. Most of us can't afford a Douchenburg and a Matchless and a board full of JHS. He didn't even make his tone sound all that glorious with the $10,000 his pastor parents spent on that :P

Rodrigo Sanchez Yea music is probably his job so he’s gotta use some good gear

Rodrigo Sanchez this would’ve helped me SO much 6 or 7 years ago...
@alfredoordonez15056 жыл бұрын
Rodrigo Sanchez the problem isn’t his rig, the problem is his tone knowledge. All the information he is giving is just crap and it’s a disservice to the people who are trying to learn about tone. So in reality he isn’t being helpful, he’s actually doing the opposite of helping.

Alfredo Ordonez If you think that this guy is not helping you at all then that is your problem. I bet that you will be still seeing his videos in the future with the same criticism. Can't wait to see your own video here in KZbin for me to see the difference, especially the "tone knowledge" that you mentioned.

Saw the gear and thought "Oh this is gonna sound awesome." - He was able to get an OK sound but when you realize he is using 5k+ in gear it is mind blowing. Bad, bad, bad.

No one talks about worship guitar tone back in the day, as long as you play your chords clean and most importantly only use the clean channel of your amp.

Hey man nice video. Appreciate the help. Been looking for a nice delay. What delay(s) do you have and/or would recommend for a contemporary worship setting similar to what you play?
@HopeCommunityWorship9199 жыл бұрын
+Alex Komala thanks for watching! My recommendation is what many of the players nowadays use... Strymon Timeline and Boss DD20. Difference in price by a few hundred, but I've used both with flawless success!
@HopeCommunityWorship9199 жыл бұрын
+Hope Community Worship one of our players was using the DD-500 by Boss this weekend. Its the new delay they put out to compete with the Strymon Timeline, but a few hundred $$ cheaper. Check it out! www.google.com/#q=Boss+DD+500

+Alex Komala You might also consider a multi-effects like the Zoom G3. I use it extensively for time-based effects like reverb and delay, it excels in that field!
@alexkomala9 жыл бұрын
Will Lane Productions Great suggestion! I've had multi-effects in the past and just could not get the tone I was looking for. Maybe i didn't have a nice enough board but in my opinion you cant go wrong with individual pedals
