That rant about Doug Walker... I think that hits on the real reason why I lapsed on the NC after all these years. People love to complain about how he goes after plotholes in the stuff he reviews, but I've always felt that was never the problem. The real problem was that Doug came to believe his own hype. He believed that he was the best in the business, that his opinion mattered more than anyone else's, including his audience's opinion. He grew to believe he was better than us. It's the same problem CinemaSins has too: they're so hate-fuckingly arrogant that it makes it impossible to enjoy their work anymore (and I was never all that down on CinemaSins in the first place). They really are just Pitchfork Media in a smaller package.

@GrehamAdelphis5 жыл бұрын
@@kasrasadrehashemi174 I don't care for internet drama myself, but here's one case where I'll at least defend the idea of Crash's speech. Doug Walker WAS the internet at one point. People wanted to be like him...JOIN him. He was the yardstick to be measured by, and at one point, That Guy With the Glasses was the site to go to for everything. He had memes, movies, the lot. People, well within reason, idolized him or wanted to learn from what worked for him. He built an empire. Now? He's a broken up entity that let his weak moments get the better of him and, in the process, he let down a lot of people, both outside of TGWTG and inside of it. He got gigantic off of one single idea, ran with that idea up the hill and made a name for himself, got an inflated ego off of it, and now, to a good few people, that one idea is essentially all he had. All the drama like the Spoony incident, Mike Michaud, Pop Quiz Hotshot's failure, and Change the Channel has crushed him and his brand over the years and this is the result. Walker isn't just "a man who recorded a bad album". The Wall wasn't just a Playing with Fire or a Having Fun with Elvis on Stage or a Hulk Rules. It was a sign of how far one of the most successful and beloved figures of the internet fell. He seriously needed a wake up call, and if he doesn't listen, his needs to be an example of what happens when internet fame fuels an ego beyond reason because his isn't the only one that went nuts and cost him...not even in his own genre. His was just the loudest "POP!". But his hurt in particular because unlike Kevin Federline, or Suicide Silence, or (going off music) Antonio Brown, Walker was one of us. I say all of this as someone who was never the biggest fan of his.

@@kasrasadrehashemi174 First of all, did you fail english class? Look up how to write properly, it's not that hard. Second, a big chuck of the 'album' is Doug complaining that people called him out on his bullshit, so of course Crash had to talk about it when reviewing it. Third, Doug isn't just "not a nice guy", he mistreated people working with him, forced them to do scenes they weren't comfortable doing, and covered up the crimes of a sex offender instead of firing him. If we don't call people out for behavior like that, how do you expect things to change?

Now I understand why you gave up the Rock Critic. I thought the name had a lot of value, but in context it makes a lot of sense that it doesn't. Your best videos as the critic were the ones that took the formulas in a positive direction (top 10 BEST nu metal bands, giving Into the Unknown and One Hot Minute fair hearings). "How to get into" is a format that more critics should do - at the end of the day it's about helping people find something special for themselves. Even your takedowns of bad songs and albums were very far from intellectually lazy and dismissive. Gratitude and compassion are the way forward and you embody that while still being an effective and useful critic. And you keep on growing instead of doubling down on mistakes. We all want to build the wall sometimes - good on you for building something better instead. Rock isn't dead, but it's less popular - it may be going the way of jazz and its best days are ahead of it (stole that from another video - David Bennett Piano is a good channel if you haven't seen it). If that's the way it goes, you have the right mix of appreciation and understanding to shepherd people into finding truly great experiences through rock music. Thank you for everything you do.

I think part of him recognizes that he's become a puppet held up by his brother and Mike Michaud, the CEO of CA, but he literally can't do anything and probably wouldn't if he could because - like you said - everyone outside of his in-group who criticizes him is an enemy. He wanted to make sketch comedy but has resigned to playing this character who I think he hates and I think that's very sad. But after all he did to the people who worked with him and trusted him, he deserves it.

There's even evidence of his friends abandoning him. One of James Rolfe's associates said that he was reportedly cutting ties with Doug Walker. Now, this may be fake, but if James, Mike, or Kyle ever confirms it, would we be so surprised? No. Because at least when James Rolfe screwed up, he admitted to it, and when presented with something controversial, he doesn't ever take the low road, he just says that everyone has said everything about stuff like Ghostbusters, the Irate Gamer, and many other things he's involved with, and asks why he needs to say anything about it. Doug Walker doesn't admit that he screwed up, respond nicely to the controversy surrounding himself, and, most of all, he's unprofessional, to the point that it's inevitable that Channel Awesome is gonna die off, and get bought out by another company, possibly Cinemassacre or some other internet company, and they will hopefully restrain the Walkers a little bit, take the Nostalgia Critic IP from Mike Michaud, and even fire Michaud for the crimes he has committed. A downside is by then Mike Mattai and James Rolfe would be put in charge. Not saying they're bad, but they'd have a big mess to deal with if they buy CA, they would have to prove to KZbin that they're nothing like them, and make a public apology for those negatively affected by the old company, like, getting dehydrated while filming, turning a previously respected guy (Justin Carmichael) into a sexual predator, allowing people like the two evil Mikes, Michaud and Ellis, while letting go Bhargav who was at least trying to be professional, and, hating on crowdfunding while doing the exact same thing they're doing, very poorly mind you. And, how will they attract new people to join the MCN after souring relations with the older ones? These are questions I have to ask because, if none of this happens, then, Channel Awesome will be forgotten about completely and the Walker Bros. will never be taken seriously again.

Themes for worst albums each year: 2014: Sociopathic idiot albums 2017: What are you doing to your sound?!(And Imagine Dragons becoming a genre) 2018: Albums that stood out for all the wrong reasons, and even the best of bands phoning it in. 2019: Who are these albums for?

2015 had Mumford & Sons, the Pope, 5FDP, All That Remains and Danzig, and before talking about the last one Crash made a speech about squandering potential. So I guess that's the main theme. It doesn't even have to fit all of them, since in 2014 only Attila, Emmure and King 810 fit the "sociopathic idiot" theme. FF5 were just lame christian geeks, Pink Floyd were boring and dull and that one Nickelback album's main distinguishing factor was the autotune. In 2016, I guess the main theme could be something like "it COULD have worked, but...". That Megadeth and RHCP albums certainly fit, Asking Alexandria had a new vocalist that worked better than the previous, the Led Zeppelin covers are all covers of amazing classics, Drowning Pool are described as a band with potential from the Sinner days, and From Ashes To New could have had a bit of value even for the sake of humor. Even La Petite Mort by King 810 was shown how it could have worked, or at least improved, via the Cane Hill comparison.

WOW!....I can't believe I've only JUST come across your tearing apart of Doug's hateful abomination! I've recently been going through a phase of revisiting all of the hilarious reaction videos to his perversion of The Wall, and it suddenly ocurred to me....I wonder why I haven't seen Crash's response to it! I looked up Fantano's worst of 2019 first (knowing it would be there without a doubt), then your own worst list appeared and I had to see what you had to say, and you know something.....holy crap, a tear was nearly brought to my eye by how clear you made it! Doug's been building his own wall this whole time! At first, I figured he hated The Wall so much because he maybe once had a girlfriend who loved it (and dumped him), or some other personal situation where someone was giving Pink Floyd more attention than they were giving him. That sort of thing, to me, seemed to be at the heart of it. Something deeply painful. Especially his bitter, fucked up take on Goodbye Blue Sky. Military brat, was he? That seems to speak to a lot. Maybe Daddy told him at a tender age to Quit Whining! - there are bigger problems in the world than YOURS!...This may be a stretch, but why otherwise put such an extreme, unreasonable thrashing on a song that anyone can see (if you watch the video), with no prior knowledge of what the song or the album are about, is about the horrors of war. Oscar bait? I mean, that came out of left field. What, is he pissed off that an Oscar is something he'll never get, himself? This venom all just smacks of something closer to home - JUST as you said. Well done, man. I wish someone would clip this part out of your video and dedicate it as its own reaction video. It deserves the attention, and I think most would agree with your take on the way Doug's been digging his own grave.

I been giving channel awesome a chance even after the controversy just so I could be reminded of the disneycembers and the commercial episodes,even if some of the more recent videos weren't the best, I still stuck with him. After I saw the wall "review" however I basically said FUCK IT. that was the final straw. Even though I dont think the wall has many flaws, I would've like to seen him give a different viewpoint of the album/movie, but it rarely even tried to do so and just came off more as complaining. I'll give Scallon that he is a good musician, but there's little he can do when he basically given around 26 songs that already exist and have to make sure they don't get copyright claimed for it. And Corey taylor... well at least we have WANYK from him.

DISCLAIMER POINTS: 1) I HATED Doug's review of The Wall. Not because I disagreed with it (although I don't AGREE with it), but because it was SO FREAKING BIZARRE!! Went WAY off the rails and left me scratching my head. 2) I have currently NOT watched The Wall (snippets and one short form music video), so I CAN'T speak on the creativity that went into it (But EVERYBODY I know who has seen it speaks HIGHLY of it!) Now that I've gotten THAT out of the way, I'd just like to remind everybody that Doug actually LIKED The Wall. He even said so near the end of his "review". But, yeah, he should've known better...

Out of all the videos and retrospectives that have come out on Doug Walker in recent times, I have you say. Your speech on him was hands down the best. Doug 's creative down spiral these past few years has been one of the most stunning cautionary tales of the decade about fame and ego and that is saying a lot. While I do believe he startled off a good and humble guy who just wanted to have fun riffing on movies, over the years he really has brought into his own hype and vision to the point where it has become unhealthy and self-destructive. So many people have suffered as a result of his choices, but the one person he is hurting the most is himself. He has to live with every terrible thing he's done or is complicate with for the rest of his life. He has to live knowing that he cannot do anything else with his online platform except Nostalgic Critic which has shown no sign of evolution since 2013. He has to keep going on pretending that none of this is happening and enjoy his tiny corner of the internet, oblivious of the damage he's left in his path. And how is he going to do that, by building a wall so tall and thick that even Roger Waters would be impressed. Maybe one day he will wake up and realize all the harm's he caused, but I'll doubt it. But if it does happen, well I hope he'll be ready for the biggest reckoning of his life.

Hands down, one of the biggest disappointments of the year was Highly Suspect's new album MCID, I know based off the title, this was a dedication to their fans, but this was just a giant sellout with vacant electronic elements and guest rapping and it tanked in the process so they don't even have that. What makes it even worse was that The Boy Who Died Wolf was one of my favorite albums of 2016, I just listened to it again last night and it's just as good as I remember it, and MCID doesn't have a drop of the quality TBWDW had. Oooofff, just, just ooofff

I also really like Billie Eilish and twenty øne piløts, who are *huge* right now. But I think the future of rock in the mainstream for the next decade is kind of up to My Chem at this point. It really must be a slow year for bad albums when Okilly Dokilly makes the same list as Doug Walker. I've never listened to a full OKDK album beyond a couple songs, since they're a one-trick pony joke band with no lyrical variation than straight-up quoting Ned Flanders, but to share a space with something as mean spirited and hateful as Doug says a lot about how good this year was for music!
