I've been ruthless with my DNFs beginning of 2018. I've grown as a reader and I can tell if a book is not my steeze within like the first chapter or two.

Hallelujah for giving ourselves permission to DNF things that aren't bringing joy or edification to our lives :)

I loved the sass about A Study in Scarlet :'D Don't get me wrong, I'm a massive Sherlock Holmes fan but that book is sooo poorly paced! The first half reads like one of the short stories (but not as good as most of them...) and then the second half is just the longest most pointless explanation of why it all happened.. I listened to it on audiobook and genuinely thought there was a glitch and it had switched to a different audiobook! So bad. I actually don't like any of the Sherlock Holmes novels apart from the Hound of the Baskervilles. anyway, great vid - new subby :)

I adore Sherlock Holmes, and toss on the audiobook as comfort background semi-regularly. I couldn't agree more about Study in Scarlet; totally disjointed and I skip it, or at least the whole Utah section. I agree with someone else above who mentioned wondering if the audiobook had glitched; I'd forgotten how bad it is and when I relistened to the Fry version (which is fabulous in all other ways except the standard depressing racism of Doyle's time) I was briefly baffled by the transition. Apparently I'd just blocked that whole mess from my memory.

Hi, I just discovered your channel via this post and your one about your experience with negative reviews. I love this video! I find it hard to be honestly negative about books but I love how you explain why you don’t like the books.

I enjoyed your video - really impressed that you had reasons for your opinions. That said - eek Loved Loved The Driver’s Seat - strangely an experience like yours at the end “what did I just read”? 100% but I loved that! I will keep watching you - I do like a strong opinion that is backed up with reasons. All Hail the DNF as well!

"No need for the high lofty language" is one of the funniest and most accurate statments I've ever heard. I feel that way about most, if not all, pretentious books.

I remember really enjoying The Hound of the Baskervilles when I read it in college, so I bought all the rest of the Sherlock Holmes books and really felt like I would love them. And so far...I don’t, and it hurts. I even remember pretending I enjoyed A Study in Scarlet because I felt like it was such a betrayal not to and quite frankly, that is stupid. Needless to say, it makes me feel a lot better knowing that I’m not alone on that one!

Interesting re: A Study in Scarlet. The style isn't for everyone, definitely. I find it too short to really dislike. xD I like the mystery well enough though yes, the flashback really messed with the pacing even if it was interesting (which it wasn't compared to the rest of it.)

Thank God someone else didn't like A Study in Scarlet! I was so oddly paced and told us over and over how smart Holmes was. I was so disappointed.

I just found your channel and I love it! You are cracking me up! Kind of nervous now because I have Muriel Sparks book on my TBR list. And after reading about the Gabriel Extends book it sounds like one I would like. I have to agree about the Sherlock Holmes book though. I like him much better as a character than in the actual stories. I don't think Doyle was a great writer, really, but he did create great characters.

i think i read the study in scarlet in a single day, so i pushed through those bits but i do remember the weird utah bits just being so random and boring. i think i took the other girl off my tbr because i have heard...terrible things. but well done for having the courage to talk about books you didn't like! one of my most hated books this year was the hating game, which everyone loved, and i gave my only one star rating. I never wrote a review, and i kind of regret that now. Sometimes negative reviews can be cathartic as well as a warning for everyone else!

My initial impulse to defend anything Holmes actually has to concede that yeah the pacing in that one with that massive stretch in the Mormon desert is not amazing, I think it's because of the serial format it was published , I recommend (if you can find them) the BBC audio plays rather than the audio books they're way more compelling and the voice acting is AMAZING sorry I just really love those plays

DNF-ing IS a learned art, isn't it? (Except in school when we're assigned something we can find nothing to love about, so we cut to the Cliff Notes and reviews and hope there's no test.) I recently DNFed Daisy Jones & The Six and The Silent Patient, and I've DNFed EVERY SINGLE THING KRISTIN HANNAH EVER WROTE. But we'll stick together and find our "sweet spots," as it were!

I'm getting similar vibes from "The Driver's Seat" that I got from "Hot Milk", so I think I'll give that a miss! I really struggle to DNF books but I think that it's something I'm going to have to work on! It sounds really liberating!

DNFing is a healthy thing. And Utah, yes. I listened to the complete collection (not read by Fry sadly) a years ago and was in the middle of a run when there was this jump in the story and I kept thinking something went wrong and my iPod skipped the ending of the story and went to the next.

If I had known that half of the Study in Scarlett was going to be a monologue on religion, I would never have picked it up. I did read the first half which covered the actual detective story. I stopped reading during the second half once I realised what it was.

Oh shiiiiit, it never occurred to me that Melody Black could be mistaken for a mystery novel!! I can't even remember if we've spoken about it (it honestly feels like a million years ago that you started reading this one) *SPOILER ALERT* but the main reason why I wanted you to read it is because it's about mental health and Extence wrote it after suffering from his own bipolar episode. I've not read too many mental health books (except for maybe Cuckoo's Nest) but I know you like them and I loved how it slowly unwound Abby's character and her super odd behaviour was gradually exposed for what it actually was. Anyways, I can absolutely see how the book would be a mega disappointment going in with the wrong genre in mind and that's my fault - SORRY! :D

Oh, and the worst book I read last year was EASILY "Thirteen Reasons Why". I also only managed two episodes of the garbage that is the TV show. It was a hate-read for me - I only finished it because I wanted to see just how terrible it could get smh
