Weird story, apparently every Andrews book centers on incest, rape, or incestuous rape. I did not know this when I was 12 years old and the books were recommended to me by the seller at Barnes & Noble, and I bought the entire series and brought it home and about halfway through the first book I brought them to my parents and said you know what, I don’t think I should be reading this. A few years later I worked at another bookstore chain called Waldenbooks, and these were in the children’s section and I would routinely move them to the adult section and get in trouble for moving them, and also for telling parents that they should not buy them for their children! I feel like somebody should have checked on Miss Andrews to see if she was OK.

Seeing Flowers in the Attic appear in your list I'm reminded of a Reddit post I saw a while back about someone who was recommended it by their friend as very moving and only realising after finishing that they had gotten it mixed up with Flowers for Algernon. Out of the thousands of unique ways to write a good plot twist, I will never forgive authors that end their book with the “it was all a movie” or “and then she woke up” vibe. Which is why my top worst book of 2021 was we were liars. So overrated & horrible writing & ending

Completely agree on The Wise Mans Fear (kinda broke my heart since I really loved the first book), A History of What Comes Next and A Deadly Education. I had a trend with my worst books of the year being the "emotionally-manipulative-ones"; books that use tragedy and traumatic events just to get a reaction from the reader (e.g. A Little Life). I'm just really uncomfortable with the use of such topics in this way, and I feel the same about the-WWII-trope you mentioned. Maybe it's just this year for me, but I don't appreciate authors trying to manipulate my emotions I guess, haha.

I ultimately ended up kind of liking A Deadly Education - in the sense that I do want to read the second one - BUT I did hate a lot about the book. It was exhausting and there was so much info dumping right in the middle of almost exciting moments. But please, please don't rule out Spinning Silver yet. OMG Flowers In The Attic. That book is like a fever dream, I'm always surprised when it's mentioned and I remember it's real. If that was one of your worst books do not pick up any of the others. They fall into a crappy cookie-cutter pattern of the main female character being treated horribly by every man around her, and deserving it because she's a s*** who slept with her brother. At least the first one had a bit of originality, albeit in a rather unusual way... It gets very lazy and formulaic in a super misogynistic way after that.

My worst book of 2021: Believe it or not, it was Ken Follet's NEVER. Yes, you got it right: The book is so dumb and poorly researched, so amateurly written, so filled with utterly cartoonish characters and cringy dialogue, I suspect K.Follet didn't really wrote it. Please DO NOT take my word. Grab a copy (preferably at your local library or borrowed ¬¬), read it FULL (the first 400 pages are still readable....after that, the book falls apart completely) and see for yourself

I've heard the opinion, which I think has something to be said for it, that Rothfuss should have released the stories in Wise Man's Fear as separate novellas or short stories. People would have been more satisfied with them in that context (except for the statutory rape bit) and he would have had two books in which to advance the actual plot instead of one. I put it down to an inexperienced author not knowing how to pace and no one telling him otherwise. But we'll see what happens with the final book.🤷

I DNF’d a Riley Sager and nothing has made me want to pick up any of his books since. Oouf. They definitely don’t sound like my cup of tea.

The best book I've read by him was the first one I picked up so I've been stubbornly trying everything he writes since only to be more and more disappointed lol

I could not stand Deadly education. I have not read any of the others you mentioned though. I tried reading v c Andrews when I was a teenager and it gave off weird vibes so I never continued that book and now hearing how f-ed up they are, glad I didn't.

Love these videos! I also didn't love Survive the Night, but quick edit to the ending **spoiler** Her "real life experience" told during the book was later turned into a movie -- it wasn't a movie the whole time.

Spoilers Of course and while she mentions that it was “enhanced” for Hollywood, the version we read is the movie so I think my point still stands.

I hate how so many male authors write such shitty and dumb femme characters! I don't know one femme who would willingly go into a strange man's car. I also hate when male authors write r**e in books because often times it's written like a r**e fantasy or as a pivotal moment of growth for a character as opposed to a crime. I'm glad you also share the thought of disliking sex scenes in books. I don't know they always seem to make me uncomfy when the author starts describing a dick. Like it throws off the whole mood for me 😂

I listened to the audio book of "survive the night" and enjoyed it actually. However some of the twists were contrived (like the bf keeping the teeth in his car glove compartment). Yes, it was a movie ... but based on her true story. And why should it be a problem it being a movie for you people who read and love fantasies. And the guy she married was not her "kidnapper"... She entered and returned to his car 3 times of her own free will. I liked the ending.
