Good job Peter. 👍 I am surprised you didn't just replace the bracket with the broken slide pin.

The DIY people might want to try heating the area before breaking off the threaded part. Heat the area where the bolt is stuck for a couple of minutes. Then go in and out with an impact wrench set on low to try and break up the rust. Heating, then dropping the part into a bucket of water often works. Hammering on the casting where the part is stuck might help too. You might get lucky and avoid all that drilling. Notice I said might. Heating red hot with an acetylene torch, then immediately hitting the part with a hose is Taryl Dactal's ('Taryl Fixes All', You Tube channel) favorite trick. It is much quicker than drilling.

I think people like to see brake jobs because we can all learn the little tips and tricks people use. Would have liked to see how you cleaned inside the caliper bracket where the slide pins sit. But I understand today for time. You are a good man for taking out the seized pin. Other techs would try to sell a whole new caliper set since they don't just sell the bracket unless you go to the pull-a-part.

This video enlightened me the reason for part costs and labour costs, labour costs is there to cover these situations. My recent conversation with a mechanic was about replacing my two oxygen sensors for my 2010 RAV4 and he clearly advised me the labour costs in case complications occur. I will never complain and I will always seek to understand. I am grateful things worked out here today. And I will try extra harder to ensure my regular maintenance is done before problems reach this point!

Caliper Pins should be cleaned and lubed at least annually especially in Winter Salted road conditions and when exposed to deep or muddy water -off road and boat launch

I suppose you never had an occasion to remove the wheels on this vehicle in any previous service. Brakes this bad would surely have revealed themselves much earlier than this. Great work, as usual. We all wish that you were OUR mechanic. Cheers!

When drilling out broken bolts always use a left handed drill bit. Often the bolt will spin out.
@Esteban_Herrera Жыл бұрын
Great tip but this wasn't threaded in at this point. The threaded part broke off leaving the pin part rust welded in it's bore. He couldn't knock this one through because it was a blind bore.

I’m starting to see a trend with these tundra’s and the slide pins seizing up and breaking off . My girls truck did the same exact thing and broke off on both rear calipers

hopefully the owner will take better care of the brakes on his truck especially if he is a subscriber and understands the necessity of regular maintenance; those rear ebrake shoes looked really rusty and doubt they were working

LEVER SUB-ASSEMBLY, PARKING BRAKE INTERMEDIATE Part Number: 463200C011 Supersession(s): 46320-0C011; 463200C010 These get messed up too. I use Motorcycle Water proof Chain Lube on stuff like this. Designed not to fling off. Great for hinges too.

I see rotted rear disc brakes in the Midwest all the time. That is why I prefer rear drum brakes since they last so much longer. For some reason, people think rear drum brakes are inferior and will ding the truck. Many reviews about the Tacoma said I wish it had rear disc brakes. I'm afraid I have to disagree.

Im looking forward to you replacing a vvti solenoid and screen. I found I significant restoration of performance and a small increase in mpg after doing this service. It took me quite a while to find and remove the filter screen. After helping several others with this replacement none of us had codes but if help restore the previous performance. These are all gen 2 Toyota Prius models. Does the same issue occur in other Toyotas? I have acquired a low milage 2011 rav4 and I’m just starting to figure out the service difference between the two engines.

I have seen worse worn rotors but never one that rusty, didn't know that was even possible. 😋. I thought both holes in the bracket were blind holes. I see now that only one is. I'm a bit anal when it comes to cleaning and would have used a bore brush in the frame holes. I wouldn't fill up the blind bore holes in the frame but I would of added more grease than you shown. My unfortunate experience with my 2008 Tundra Limited 5.7 was my rear wheel bearings went out. Been making a humming noise going up some hills. Dealer said it was my Goodyear Wranglers. I bought 4 brand new dealer take off wheels and tires. I went with the 18" wheel this time. I had the same humming noise. I went on a trip and my VSC warning light and the slip indicator illuminated. I could get the indicators to extinguish by turning off the key. However they illuminated again after 40 minutes of driving. To buy each and have them pressed in cost a small fortune. The service guy at the dealer said they have a kit that saves time and dollars. The kit even came with new backing plates. My truck no longer hums going up hill and the fault indicators no longer illuminate when driving. My truck resides in SoCal's rust free zone. I mention all this because if this happened to my truck with so little rust, it's highly possible it will happen to this truck that sees ocean water.
