My sister bought her Cadi 2006 SRX in 2012. No problems with motor, changes oil every 3000 miles and it does NOT use oil. It has 152,500 miles and I bought it from her with some minor repairs that are needed to be done, such as Purge Solenoid needed replacement for 40 bucks which I did, rear strutts I have new ones for tailgate, they need replacing, glove box will fall off if you open it so its locked closed until I try a fix with JB weld. And now coming home from a 2 hour trip and its freezing cold I find out the heater on the drivers side is putting out cold air. I'm hopeful all it needs is a Heater Core Flush. The car though Runs great! So to clarify what you are saying ALL 3.6 engines do NOT use oil. This one does not.

People bashing the Chevy 3.6 v6 it is a very good engine. IF you take care of it!! Change oil. and keep it full. I have a 2008 cadillac sts with 172,000. miles on it, and just now needs a starter this month. I have a 2011 cadillac sts, with 63,000. miles on it, no problems except a leaking oil pan. I had a 1996 sts with the v8 Northstar another good engine, but has head gasket problems. Bottom line CHANGE OIL, Not when ths milage meter says to, but half way at 50% an oil change is much cheaper than another engine...
@TopLineRacer
@TopLineRacer Жыл бұрын
So it's a good engine you just have to do an abnormal amount of maintenance and monitoring to keep it running? The 3.6's have gotten better over the years but theres a reason GM made changes. Some of the early ones lasted a long time but they aren't a good engine over all.

In the spring of 2019 I bought a clean 2008/110K miles on it from a Mercedes dealer for $3200 "as-is." They said the motor was shot and told me the only way for me to get it off their lot was via a tow truck. I had them pay for the tow to my home 20 miles away. I drove it to a Pep Boys and asked them to do a diagnosis. They called an hour later to ask if they could add 3 qt's of oil. I said just change it along with the filter. It was all it needed. The previous owners did not keep up with the maintenance. I charged up the a/c for $30 bucks and had the rear brakes done. That's it. The car rides nice, sounds great, gets up and scoots and I would trust it on a long journey. It has 3rd row seating and when all is folded down I can sleep back there stretched out (5'10"). So far I like it. I watch the oil level like a hawk and will be changing it again soon.

Cadillac finally fixed the head bolt problem for good on Northstars beginning with the '04 SRX & the '05 STS. There were no similar problems with the Northstars after this time, and they were produced through the STS' 2010 model year. 2002 & 2003 models weren't quite as notorious for the head gasket/head bolt problems but they did crop up quite a bit. Between '93 & '02 almost every one of them had the problem (even if it may have gone well over 100k miles before hand), and those that didn't, didn't because they were put into the shop before it occurred for the aftermarket cert repair.

Good thoughts. I wouldn't mind seeing more high mileage reviews like this. People who actually know what's up seem to recognize that the Northstar is actually pretty solid. It makes an already good-looking car (at least by 3-row mom wagon standards) dependable and quick. The only thing it'd be missing is ventilated seats, but I suppose they had to reserve that feature for the fully-equipped Escalades of the day.

Still running today with 201,000 miles as the owner called me, thanking me for selling him years ago a well maintained car. No such issues with that engine. The Cadillac V8-6-4 made in the 1980s was much worse as was the Cadillac HT4100. This engine is fine these days.

I also have the 2008 SRX 3.6 with 93K miles on it. Bought it new, so know that it was not beat up by someone else before I got it. I followed the OLM until a recall where GM reset them from 5K interval down to 3K interval. It was about that same time that I got an extended warranty from GM for 10 years / 120K for the chains....which has come and gone That shift probably caused early damage to the chains and guides as the oil levels dropped below minimum levels. Car drinks oil to the tune of 1 quart per three weeks of local driving. Right now have the dreaded rattle on cold startup - goes away under 5 seconds. I change the oil / filter myself with synthetic regularly at 3K, but noticed over the past year the rattle getting worse. It is a ticking timebomb waiting to go off and unfortunately will be junk once the chain jumps. My Understand that the left bank is the culprit with most of these failures as the vents in the valve covers are way to large and let oil back into the intake manifold where its burned.

I have a V6 SRX 2005, I live in eastern Europe and I can say the car is quite nice. Love it. The engine needs oil top up, thats true. But it runs solid, so I guess me and the previous 2 owners did not let it run on low oil levels. I would say it is a very reliable and powerful engine, suits the car quite well and so far I havent had any issues with it- the car has 270'000km. You just have to remember to put some oil in it every 1000km. From one oil change to the next one it need about 3 liters of oil to refill. I don't think thats such a big problem :D

I have had one I absolutely love! ALl of the sudden I did notice some noise that kind of sounded like the timing chain. I took it in and told them to work it over while I was on Vacay. They did just under $2K worth of work, said they replaced the starter, but it was starting fine for me. They said the starter went out when they were working on it. So I took it home, and did not feel like it was quite right. One day driving down the road, I lost all access to wipers, radio, everything and it said the security system had been breached or somethign like that. I was able to turn the car off, and it came back on just fine. We had a cold snap, and the car never started again. The mechanic is telling me I need a new motor. I put in a new battery before I had it towed to the shop. So what you are saying about the "jump time" makes sense. Do you really have to replace the motor to fix it? I love the car, but is it really worth finding a used motor and spending $4k to put a ;used motor in it?

As far as driving experience goes, I too like the Northstar. It's quiet, powerful and smooth, all of which, at least for me, are important qualities in an automobile. That being said, it suffers from some serious design flaws GM could have easily avoided, but GM has a long, honored tradition of inexplicable, fatal flaws. It's also a bitch to work on, or around. My 2002 Deville is one of the most comfortable, easy to drive vehicles I've ever owned, and given my centenarian sense of style, I enjoy looking at it as well. Unfortunately, the Northstar is shoehorned under the hood and I loathe having to take half the car apart to make repairs. It also leaks oil like a sieve, has a mystery miss that vanishes for long periods of time and blows white smoke out one tailpipe (For variety) at just the right temperature, under specific conditions, and then, that too vanishes mysteriously for long periods of time. I can't, say, therefore, that it's a great engine, because it really isn't...but I still like it. I may need therapy. I don't like anything about the 3.6L.

In 2015, We bought a 2004 with the Northstar V8, AWD, 3rd Row, and Tow Package. Currently at 125,000 miles (It's a backup car, due to Escalade/Corvette/STS) Incredible bang for your buck!!! Only problem with the Northstar variant is the Horsepower!!! Stretched chain in the transfer case @ 100,000 miles. Pretty easy job though, under $300 to repair myself. Also ended up buying a Cadillac STS with the same drive train (Northstar/AWD) That engine finally went @ 325,000 Miles due to coolant leaking into the cylinders (Transmission still going strong), still runs but going to be rebuilding that engine soon. Back to the SRX though, going to be dropping some cash on updating the outdated radio here soon and maybe an E&G Grille, Can't wait to have a 7 in screen / Wireless Apple / Android Auto while updating the interior look!!! Northstar LH2 is a solid motor.

Hey! I will try to help you the best I can. The miles are great on that car and the price seems to be decent if it's in good shape. The engine in that SRX is the Northstar. I personally wouldn't hesitate to drive that car. However, no luxury car you purchase will be as reliable as your windstar or mainstream vehicle like a accord, Camry, Malibu etc. Your mechanic will also probably steer you away from the Northstar engine but I personally have had good experiences with them. He should look out for rust if the car is in the north. Clogged catalytic converters are also common as well as coolant/head gasket issues. The transmissions are reliable. Electronic issues are common as well but are more random so it will be hard for a mechanic to identify them unless it's currently acting up......If you are not mechanically inclined and just need a reliable small SUV I'd steer you toward a Rav4, Highlander, CRV, Pilot, or Escape. I'm a GM guy for sure and I've had great luck with them but in this case you may want to check out some other brands. Hope that helped! Thanks for watching!

Check for oil leaks!!!! If there is a oil pan that's leaking it's an intricate job and the engine has to come out of the car. Just went thru replacing a rear main seal in mine glad it wasn't the oil pan.

@@philancell884 in what world is a rear main seal easier to change than an oil pan??? Rear main seal, between engine and transmission. Oil pan, under engine. Youve got it backwards my friend so hopefully you paid someone else to do it.
@philancell884
@philancell884 3 жыл бұрын
@@mturner221 before you slam me genius look up a Northstar Cadillac engine. Yes the transmission has to come out but you can't just change an oil pan seal on a Caddy. it's part of the lower main bearings case. They made it like that to deliver oil instantly to each individual main bearing. You have to dismantle the whole lower part of the engine with the engine out of the car. At Cadillac service it's a 3K job. And if a jackleg mechanic does a fast gasket seal on it one of the journal's to the main bearings could get plugged and I don't have to tell you what THAT means.

Ok ok here is the best part a out the ly7 aka 3.6 high feature v6. Yea the timing chains are issues yes there 3 of them yea its expensive.... but the thing gives you plenty of warning if you listen to your engine you can hear the chains growling in the front when they get loose well before they skip teeth or come off.. next the srx is a longitudinal engine very easy to replace chains in the vehicle.. and 3rd the ly7 is a no interference engine meaning unless you have the engine reved up beyond 3k rpms when the chain comes off the engine with have no damage slap a new timing set and water pump might aswell replace thermostat also and drive it for another 150k and for God sakes change the oil every 3k these engines love love love fresh oil qith there oil actuated timing tensioners!!!!!

I could get my hands on a 2006 SRX V8 with AWD & 150k miles / 240k km. There is to much out there in the Internet & still hard to choose. This Video helped but then the comments again make it hard 😂 So, in general, when it seems in good condition & taking care of then I should go for it? How are spare parts for these? I only owned/own three GM prodcuts & when it comes to parts their always cheap (for my taste) but still good quality. Owned a 93 C1500 SportSide Truck (should've never sold), own a 2000 Camaro with the Buick V6 & a 72 Chevelle Malibu Sedan. Parts are way easy to get & "cheap".

That car has been rode hard and put away wet. With that being said..I have a 2004 SRX with the 3.6L and 148K miles and it's got a couple of the same issues. It uses 1 quart of oil every 1000 to 1500 miles. Doesn't matter if I road trip for 2000 miles or city drive for 2000 miles, it will use a quart in that time. My driver's side seat also ripped in the same spot. But being a Southwest car that's parked under a roof every day, no rust, no paint fading and no sunroof/leaking issues. It has been the smoothest driving car I've ever owned. Eventually I will get another Cadillac to keep as my daily cruiser and start modifying this one for the car shows. No one in my area has one and it gets looks every place I go. I'll fix it up a little and put it in some car shows and see what happens.

my o6 SRX is beautiful inside and out! .. people comment on it anytime i take it out… however… my servicer is leary about servicing! the underbody is so severely rusted (and dealer stated it’s been a common issue in this year of the SRX, because of some “underbody shield??) so severe that he advised junking it!! Now how does one just go & do that with a beautifully appearing auto?.. The rust out frame is so extreme that IMO it should be a safety recall! my dealer mechanic advised that he sure wouldn’t drive distance because the body could detach! ( Obviously these are crossovers & intended for families!!) How can Cadillac justify such on a beautifully, garage kept auto? Anyone else experiencing such? .. I just can’t consider junking my beautiful black Betty with the added electric rear seat, when needed, electric sunroof, heated leather seats, dual automatic/manual shift engine & the amazing sound of the bose radio y’all ! .. any Help or suggestions out there?

Bah. Bought an auction 2006 SRX 3.6l V6 for $3800.00. Clean, like new, well maintained, regularly serviced with 140k miles. Yes I did replace the timing chains and the car will last me forever now for $5000.00 and change. It DOES NOT burn oil like you claim these vehicles do. For the low miles I actually drive it it's a definite keeper. If you're a moron and drive it hard then you will have issues but that's on EVERY CAR. And if you switch to HID lights you will most likely screw your electrical up so leave them be. The ONLY issue that pisses me off and this is ALL Cadillac models, are the headlights getting moisture in them. And Cadillac refuses to address that ongoing permanent problem they have. I won't buy any used parts from ebay or Amazon so got new for $225 ea and changed them myself without dropping the bumper pretty easily. But you can take your headlight assy and using a big gauge needle on a large syringe, bead some dax all long the seams (make sure to rub it in with your finger of course) and never get moisture in your headlights. Just have them polished every few years to maintain their clarity.
