Matt McMuscles did an episode of What Happened about this game last year, for what was supposed to basically be a cheap cash-in kids game it had a surprisingly troubled development. One of the more interesting parts is that a bunch of dialogue submitted by the Simpsons crew had to be thrown out because some of the lines they came up with were “too graphic and offensive” to put in the game.

An interview in the UK magazine Retro Gamer suggests that this game was extremely rushed and had some strict rules as to its design and making. They even knew Ned was a problem and didn't have time to correct it!

I was so damn excited for this game when it came out, raced to EB Games when they opened, bought it, ran home, played for an hour, and returned it to the store. Only time I've ever done that in my 30 years of playing games. You would think the combo of my two favorite things at the time would be amazing, but they shit the bed on it so hard.

My nephews had it - they were into wrestling games at that time. A quick cash-in on the Simpsons name. Luckily, The Simpsons Hit and Run on the PS2 was great fun.

Lol the game I did that with was Just Cause 4, which is funny because I really liked the 2nd game. The 4th was just soooo mid that I returned it and got Ghost Recon Wildlands instead.

This games audio is so unforgiving just a constant assault of random Simpsons noises even right at the end all you hear is Homer's Doh and Krusty's laugh repeating.

Ned Flanders was stupid busted in this game because, even though he was mechanically weak, he had a dedicated pray command that had a random chance of striking Ned’s opponent with divine wrath for massive damage.

There are some excellent behind the scenes videos about what happened with this game, I'd suggest giving them a look. The poor developers put a lot of work into this that they had to throw away because of studio meddling from Fox executives. It also doesn't help that some school shootings happened during development so anything school related had to be pretty much removed as well.

Played this a lot as a child, like others I remember ridiculously hard fights (Bumblebee Man, Smithers and Mr Burns, Ned Flanders) but it did teach me strategy at least. Start with Groundskeeper Willie, use the rake from distance. As soon as I beat Bumblebee Man, switch to Bumblebee Man ans use the dog as much as possible (again distance attack). As soon as I beat Ned Flanders, switch to Ned Flanders and use the prayer attack when possible. Not great if you want close up fighting, but it did teach me to cheese games a bit which came in use later in my gaming life (KOTOR and KOTOR 2, get to force heal and sith lighting, spam them while running away)

Despite the bad gameplay, this game doesn't look half bad for a PS1 Simpsons game. The models, colours, and outlines look relatively good quality compared to some adaptations on the system.

I put an embarrassing amount of time into this game. My buddy and I were both big Simpsons fans at the time as we hadn't accepted yet that the show wasn't what it used to be. Even at the time we noted that this was crap graphics and even worse gameplay. It was 100% about playing as the Simpsons!

Julie Kavner who voices Marge pretty much sounds like Marge, she has nodules on her vocal cords which causes the gravely sound of her voice. She also has an amazing contract, she never has to do any promotion for the show and she never has to do Marge's voice in public.

I played this game in the back of an RSL (a pub) in the kids room when I was like eight? I just remember the kid I was playing with wouldn't tell me what the buttons did so I had to mash them until I figured out the moves.

Simpsons games are normally amazing. I remember road rage was the first game I ever played on my ps2. And I had the Simpsons game which is severely underrated. That game was good.

I played this game for longer than I should've as a kid. I think I did enjoy it somewhat but the same way someone might develop stockholm syndrome. The fact you didn't get to Ned Flanders though really is a shame, that's the moment most PS1 kid owners with this game realised that life is just not fucking fair and fuck it all. I can really recommend Sean Seanson video, "The Worst PS1 Games? | Sean Seanson" where he talks about topics like this game, real good watch.

This is a real bandwagon one I think. Its biggest crime is a few obviously broken characters like Flanders and Smithers, but it's a mostly functional game especially given its fraught development. Certainly less broken than most modern wrestling games anyway. This is one of those "I played it when I was a kid and I liked it" games for me, admittedly but there's enough variety in the characters to make it interesting to play.
