Hey Pat, I was rewatching this bracket, and the part towards the end where you and Kiwi wondered if David Gallagher was the most-represented voice actor on the bracket got me wondering how true that was, so I figured I would go through the copy of the bracket myself to see how close you guys were, and this is the data I found: Haley Joel Osment (Sora/Data-Sora) - 14 quotes David Gallagher (Riku/Riku Replica/Riku-Ansem) - 11 quotes Quinton Flynn (Axel/Lea) - 4 quotes Jesse McCartney (Roxas/Ventus) - 3 quotes Willa Holland (Aqua) - 3 quotes Wayne Allwine (former Mickey Mouse) - 3 quotes Bill Farmer (Goofy) - 3 quotes Jodi Benson (Ariel) - 2 quotes Susanne Blakeslee (Maleficent) - 2 quotes Tony Anselmo (Donald Duck) - 2 quotes Mena Suvari (KH2 Aerith) - 2 quotes Mandy Moore (KH1 Aerith, ironically not KH3 Rapunzel) - 1 quote to many Bret Iwan (current Mickey Mouse) - 1 quote Will Friedle (Seifer) - 1 quote Rutger Hauer (KH3 Xehanort) - 1 quote Alyson Stoner (Current Kairi) - 1 quote Shanelle Gray (Larxene) - 1 quote James Patrick Stuart (Xigbar) - 1 quote Derek Stephen Prince (Vexen) - 1 quote, yeeeees Sean Marquette (KH2 Pence) - 1 _____ Ryan Potter (Hiro) - 1 quote Pat Carroll (Ursula) - 1 quote Richard Epcar (Current Ansem SoD) - 1 quote Billy Zane - (Former Ansem SoD, here by technicality because of Riku-Ansem) - 1 quote Then finally, there were 3 lines that were not voiced.

Also, while I'm collecting mostly-pointless data from your bracket, I was personally curious to see the distribution of the KH games themselves throughout the bracket, so here's that: KH2 - 14 quotes (Pat's anti-KH2 bias strikes again, smh) KH1 - 12 quotes KH3 (including ReMind) - 11 quotes Dream Drop Distance - 9 quotes (2/3rds of the quotes come from Sora's campaign, only 3 for Riku's) Re:Chain Of Memories - 8 quotes (5 quotes from Riku's campaign, 3 from Sora's) Birth By Sleep - 3 quotes (2 quotes from Aqua's campaign, 1 from Ventus's, and none from Terra's; Pat's pro-Terra bias strikes again for real this time) 358/2 Days- 3 quotes Re:Coded - 2 quotes The mobile game that started at X, became Unchained, and fulfilled its duty through Union Cross - 2 quotes

21:31 It's not some translation error (at least not in this line). He actually does refer to smell - 匂い - in the Japanese version too. The Japanese line was "Come on out, Ansem. I can tell you're here from the smell." (出てこいよ アンセム 匂いでわかる). Similar case for other lines such as 30:58. (you can translate 匂い as aura, but only in the sense of the "feel" a person gives off emotionally, like how in English you could say "He has a cool/dangerous aura" to mean "The impression I get is that he's really cool/dangerous", not "aura" in the supernatural sense) 22:56 Actually, in the Japanese version of KH1, Kairi shuts herself down too (or at least, she opens the door for Sora to do it). In Japanese, instead of her asking "I can't help?" and Sora replying "You'd kind of be in my way.", she instead asks "Would I be a hindrance?" (足手まとい?), and Sora pretty much replies with "Well, I guess you could say that." (まぁ そういうこと). 24:37 You probably could already guess such, but it wasn't a pun in the Japanese version. In that line, he doesn't use the normal terms for the KH entity-type "Nobody" (ノーバディnōbadi), instead calling himself "one who doesn't exist" (存在しない者 sonzai shinai mono) - which does also describe Nobodies, but isn't a pun. 31:45 In Japanese, she just says "I am Strelitzia. Right here is a place only for me." (私はストレリチア、ここは私だけの場所。) 46:40 Just as an interesting tidbit, in the Japanese version, Sora doesn't say anything like "You're stupid". He instead says "The Heartless are a dangerous force." (ハートレスは危険な力だ). So Sora calling Riku that was a localization addition inserted into the dialogue for whatever reason (the following line about hearts being swallowed is correct though). 1:28:44 The Japanese version explicitly avoids this specific issue you have with the line (and honestly, I think the overall line was more touching and less corny in the Japanese version). In Japanese, he says "Xion, let's have ice cream again. The three of us." (シオン また3人でアイスを食べよう). 1:37:45 The Japanese had it as "I am... We are... not alone!" (僕は― 僕たちはー 一人じゃない!). So in that version, he was correcting himself. 2:00:02 Funny you say that, because in the Japanese version, she does say “(Because,) it’s almost like you two are brothers.” (だって あなたたちまるで兄弟みたい). 2:26:25 The translation isn’t wrong here (あんた どっから来たんだ does mean “Where…did you come from?”), but I wanted to explain this part since I think the delivery contributes to the misinterpretation of what Sora is really asking here (either a change of delivery or perhaps rewording the direct translation would have maybe fixed this). Sora isn’t asking this question in the sense of “Where the heck did you appear from all of a sudden!?”. He is asking in the sense of “Wait a second… Where are you from? Are you… not from this world?”. The guy is talking about worlds, and Sora wasn’t paying attention to the significance of that at first, and then he realizes the implication (that a guy he doesn’t know talking about “this world” as if it is one of many could be from another world). This is also why in the Japanese version, he pauses his sentence and goes “Ah” in realization before asking the question, as opposed to the localization where it translated his “Ah!” exclamation as a questioning “Huh?”. Sora’s question is actually focusing on the “where are you from” aspect and not the “how did you appear before me” aspect.

I'll defend "I'm me" a bit. It's not supposed to be a line meant to confuse on who's the real Riku and it's not supposed to be Replica trying to say he's the real Riku. It's Replica being incredibly envious of the fact that Riku can say he is who he is. He's envious that Riku has an identity to confidently call his own. Riku Replica can't say "I'm me" and mean it, he's a fake clone of someone else. He can never be Riku so it drives him crazy that he can't have what Riku has; an identity. I think the only defence I have of the KH3 Axel monologue is that he's immediately annihilated not 2 seconds later by Xemnas, and ever since I've wondered if the developers were intentionally trolling with that scene. Like, Axel builds up this big head of steam, says his 4th wall breaking line about how cool he is, swings at Xemnas.... and then his blade gets caught, the music immediately cuts out, Xemnas is like "Is this some kind of fucking joke?" and then he shoots Axel to death. I definitely feel like there's a bit too much 'meta' revolved around calling "You'd kind of be in the way." a bad line. Sora says it with a friendly chuckle and Kairi takes it in stride because, in KH1, it's just objectively true. Kairi's not a fighter, and the majority of the game is spent trying to find her. Sure she saves Sora from being a Heartless, but he only became a Heartless to save her in the first place. If she did come along, then what? Turn the rest of the game into an escort mission? No matter how you spin it, in the context of KH1 that line is perfectly fine. Only when you inject how the rest of the series treats Kairi does it sound even remotely questionable.
@bnashee2 ай бұрын
Yeah tbh and i get the impression in that scene that she fully knows that. she has absolutely no experience fighting or really travelling with any autonomy to the other worlds, so it would largely have been her learning everything new like sora does at the beginning of the game. When the Replika died, it had enough of an identity to form a heart. That heart was secretly inside Riku. Riku was unaware of it until KH3 when they began to talk to each other. When the Replika sacrificed itself, giving up a possibility to get a vessel, he basically told Riku to give the vessel to Naminé so she could have a proper form outside of being a Nobody. Nice video. I am taking my time and watching it in chunks. One minor note. 1:05:25 The commentary from Sora and Riku on Neku's and Beat's full names is actually continuing a running gag from their original game, TWEWY. Beat's given name is oddly long, not-tough-sounding, and contains a more common name within its syllabic bounds. And since it is always a pain to translate jokes, they took a few liberties in the English version of TWEWY. Neku's response (in English) to hearing Beat's full name the first time was "Die...bee...what? Is that some kind of curse?" So the DDD writers and translators were kind of just working with what they had for this scene.

A reason for why the timing and the lines in general in Re:CoM are so fucken weird is because they didn’t sync their mouths to the English lines, and thus the lines were read to fit the Japanese movements. Okay, I'm gonna go with a somewhat opposing take on "He did it. He opened Kingdom Hearts." First and foremost, let's get this out of the way: It is a bad delivery. I think of the major cast, Willa Holland as Aqua might be my least favourite performance. But I don't really agree with Pat saying the line needs urgency behind it. For Aqua, especially from 0.2 onwards, I read a lot of her lines as this flat, emotionally dead monotone because of just how drained and mentally exhausted she is from her time in the Realm of Darkness. Like, she doesn't have the energy to emote anymore, because she's so close to just giving up on everything. So I actually kinda like what I felt they were going for with that line, where Aqua's trying not to just...give up on seeing Xehanort open Kingdom Hearts. THAT BEING SAID, I do think the execution is sub-par. I just think it's a different kind of bad than what Pat said at 3:06:50.
@owenbridgers2 ай бұрын
I quite like it because of that. She’s just so done with everything not related to her friends that she just, zones out. I would too if I was her all of that shit she went through was crazy.
@bnashee2 ай бұрын
Yeah i feel like that line was supposed to be her feeling overwhelmed and defeated by that. It wasn't *meant* to be an urgent line, more of a "im severely depressed and this just made it worse actually" thing. Because TBH at this point in the story Aqua very clearly is deeply depressed because of her time in the Dark Realm and honestly everything else that has happened to her before and during it. I honestly don't have an issue with that line at all besides the general sense of I dont know if her VA has ever really given a lot of life to the character. personally, hot take, but i dont like most of her line delivery across the series so this just felt like the usual underwhelming performance
@dex11572 ай бұрын
@@owenbridgers I remember playing 0.2 and being pleasantly surprised by Willa's performance in that game. I thought she was quite solid. I might not think that if I went and replayed it now, but from my memory, she was solid there. And it's because I felt that her performance, while occasionally falling a little flat, felt appropriately worn-down and jaded after everything she went through.
@dex11572 ай бұрын
@@bnashee That is totally fair. As I said, Holland's performance is probably my least favourite of our major cast, so I get why it feels like more of the same for you. I just felt like 0.2 and 3 were heading in a direction that Holland was able to pull off a lot more effectively than what BBS asked of her. I still don't *love* the end result, but I at least felt in later games I got what they were going for. Because yes, Aqua is severely depressed by this point in time, and while I don't expect it to be put under the kind of spotlight that it could be, I do feel that given the flashback upon seeing the Demon Tide, I do think it's something the developers are aware of and acknowledging for her.

That "Of course I do" suffers not from the delivery of Mickey but the delivery from Donald. I'm almost 100% sure Donald was supposed to say: "Do you REMEMBER what Ansem looked like?"

@Killagoose772 ай бұрын
Maybe someone else noted it in the comments, but I'm hoping Pat sees someone saying it as a clarification. The two key blade masters line is entirely an English line. In the original Japanese, he says "There can't be two heroes." Note that Riku mentions that Sora is "hero of the keyblade" during the events of the game. He is basically saying that the keyblade can't be wielded by two people, which was true, since the Keyblade picked one person to go with in the original. You can actually mention that the other one IS a badly translated line because Keyblade master took on a bigger meaning later on and so it causes confusion to newer players that probably don't remember these games came out years apart.
@plnkblue2 ай бұрын
both “dark rescue” and the kh2 mickey response feel like examples of translations that don’t quite land. there’s a similar moment in kh3 at the end of monstropolis, where mike says something along the lines of, “the harder you try, the funnier it gets,” but he’s making air quotes while he says it, implying some sort of sarcastic, play-on-words joke that exists in the japanese dialogue, but didn’t make sense in translation, and thus was changed. “dark rescue” feels like a bad direct translation attempt, and mickey’s “of course i do!” feels like an improper grammatical error that happened as a similar translation error.
@liamwhite35222 ай бұрын
For the king mickey kh2 line, it could even be a mistranslated Donald line that's mucking everything up. If he said something like "Do you even know what Ansem looks like?" 42:00 I feel like another argument against Kairi having such an unconfident line is that Riku and Sora never had any lines like this even in KH1 where they would've been in the same situation as Kairi is now. Sora came out the gate swinging against the Heartless which is maybe saying more about him being young and naive and maybe a little dumb, but I dunno, he didn't even have training which Kairi did. the only thing I can think of that makes sense of Kairi's line is that she's fighting Xehanort as one of her first real fights in the series so I guess it makes a bit more sense as to why that would make her nervous

Regarding the whole smell thing, the sense of smell is deeply connected to memory. So not only is it important intimately between characters who care for each other, but it fits the whole memory thing CoM and Re:CoM are about. Also, you could chalk it up to be Riku being bad with talking with girls. (Granted, he still ends up spending a year with Naminé and then another year later on once he helps her get an actual body.)
@kupotenshi2 ай бұрын
To this day I still don't know what Aqua meant by "you two would make the weirdest brothers" At least Riku smelling darkness fits within the context of ~KH Darkness~ and Namine having the same smell (or aura) as Kairi makes sense because she's Kairi's nobody, so the line explains new story lore in a subtle way despite it coming across creepy and weird. Aqua's is outta nowhere with zero context for this brotherly dynamic with two new characters we don't know, and the game goes on to fail to show us how Terra and Ventus have a "weird brother" relationship. Just completely awful story-wise and line-wise.
@liamwhite35222 ай бұрын
I've been turning it over in my head for a while, and I think either "weirdest" has to be a different adjective, or she needs to drop the "would", or both. Either make the trio more of a family dynamic, or make the idea that they could (literally) less weird.
@sacb0y2 ай бұрын
I don't think she meant Terra and Ventus alone, she probably meant them as "my brothers". The way she says it doesn't have to exclude her. I think the point was she views them as family. So until he understands that it's the REAL org13 invading the dream, Sora will just see this whole journey as a safe, sanitized training ground created by Yen Sid. And he thinks himself Hero Material, so in his mind he's already won & there's no danger. In that context, I see Sora's DDD voice deliveries making sense. In Sora's POV, DDD is his version of Kairi & Lea training in Merlin's Forest; there's no need to be on-edge and badass like he was in previous games.

I've always found the 'I've got some unfinished business with this puppet' line to be so sinister. Geppetto just acknowledged Pinocchio as his 'son' and Riku immediately dehumanizes him and calls him an object, thereby trivializing the relationship that Geppetto just established and giving Riku the mindset that he can now do whatever he wants since he doesn't view him as real.
