Ive been in paris for two weeks now and I swear to go I never want to leave. Even with confinement I've really enjoyed this experience. Yesterday I went to a park (within one kilometer form my apartment of course) and was just wondering around following the crowd of people and ended up on a lookout point where I got a beautiful view of the city and could even see the sacre coeur. Was definitely not expecting that and ironically my shuffled playlist decided to play la vie on rose which made me smile. But on the not so fun side I've been having such a hard time opening a bank account and finding my own apartment because you can't have one without the other.

the areas of Paris that are actually beautiful have been less and less over the years. Large parts of Paris are literally filthy, it's like worse than Victorian London. They love their dogs over there, but never clean up, they smoke everywhere which makes the air and buildings filthy, they just throw their cigarette butts on the ground and walk away. And with all the strikes, nothing works and even regular trash isn't collected. Paris USED TO BE THE CITY OF LIGHTS, it is sad to see it declining into the gutter ... literally.

I feel like a typical expat but getting robbed is mine. I was living in Denmark and I am usually uber careful about things but I had bring my laptop I used for work home, one weekend (it’s usually left at work) and I ran into a friend and we got food and I forgot about my laptop in my bag. Anyway at some point during the meal (with a beer each), a man rudely knocks the table and beers go everywhere and wrecks my phone and then my friend notice my bag was gone. All I got when I returned to work devastated in the morning was “how much company data was on that laptop and can you erase your laptop remotely” from my main manager then CEO called me into his office the next morning and handed me an old laptop he had and was like “I don’t want you carrying in your main laptop and risk getting it stolen”. The CEO was a local Dane, while the manager was an expect her self and she has a ton of issues, she was very fake nice while my CEO was kinda cold but fair. I learned a lot about Danes though, they might seem cold but they really do look out for you if the trust and like you. So anyway not an amazing story but it’s an interesting to me how different the approach was and also how I thought I would be so cautious and fine, never in a million years did I think someone would be willing to knock over drinks and break our phones to grab a bag. I should of saw it coming!

Well I remember, after having flown from Jamaica to Brussels (a 10-hour flight) and from Brussels to Montpellier (a 6-hour train ride), we arrived at about 10 PM expecting the executive secretary of International Foreign Relations and his assistant to wait for us at the train station. They had sent an email message to our professor saying they would be waiting for us there when we arrived. Late that night, we arrived and to our astonishment, NOBODY was present as expected! We needed someone to take us to the students' residence where we (my colleagues/friends) would be staying at so we took a cab. When we finally got there (by ourselves at about 22h00) we waited and stayed for while (until 22h40 - 22h55) until a student rode by on his bicycle & used his magnetic keyring to open the gate. We approached a watchman who had probably seen us waiting by the gate to be admitted and he was there in a room sitting somewhere where we ourselves had gone to greet him. He gave us our room keys and other stuff and the only thing he filled me in on was where the washroom was and that he was only there to "win money" (his English was terribly bad so I had a hard time deciphering what he was saying). He then gave me and my colleagues a rusty old wheelbarrow to transport our luggage... We were wowed...

Funny, as a parisian, I'm really, really not surprised by these moments xD None of them. For strikes, it becomes trivial when you know their path and stuff, but it requires quite the habit of knowing where to look about these information. For apartments, it's shooting a bullet in the foot to search inside the area of Paris. But on the other hand, knowing which suburbs are good also requires a lot of information. Really the crappiest part of Paris is lodging.

I spent a few weeks in Buenos Aires and was shocked by the dog 💩 that littered the beautiful and ruinously uneven pavements. I remember watching an elegant woman striding down the street in a pair of beautifully-tailored cream wool crepe trousers which fell to the very back of her heel. She stepped off the pavement into a large running pile of poop which stained the bottom of those beautiful trousers. My heart ached for her and she made a high-pitched noise of rage and disgust.😔

@@TiffanieDavis When I first moved to France in 2003, I came here as a masters student and the housing coordinator for the program said to every student that it is *extremely frowned up* to ask to do that in France and under no circumstances should we even suggest it to landlords. I did it anyway and the landlord didn't take to kindly to me even asking. But yes, you are right, it could be a case by case basis, like MANY things in France. It all depends on who you have to do deal with that day and what rules they plan to enforce or ignore. If you haven't noticed yet, French people love making up rules and get off on denying and refusing people things. Like you, I love Paris very much but ça c'est la France. LOL :)

Snap! I'm sorry this all happened to you. I can totally relate! When I was living in Lisbon I also had paper thin walls and could hear my very noisy neighbor upstairs MOVE FURNITURE all night every night! Turned out she was a lady in her 50's but looked much older. She never went out, and walked around her apt dragging a chair around. I still don't know why, as she could walk normally. My landlady talked to her and told me she was "a peculiar lady", giving me a look as if to say she was weird indeed. The noise never stopped. Back in Germany, a Country where they always find reasons to fine you, they fined me on a train for having the "wrong ticket" when I was paying a monthly fee of almost 300€ and the train I was on was a slower train than I usually took going the very same route. Then in Sweden I ended up living with a Vietnamese dude and his sister. The guy turned out to be a bit of a psychopath and we ended up in court (!) I was in my 20's...He was taking drugs apparently, talking nonsense and threatened me with a pair of scissors one morning when the sister wasn't there. I ended up running outside, stopping some women on the street who then called the cops and took him. During the trial his sister came to me and said :"You left without saying goodbye, I hope we can stay friends..." 😐 the nerve!! All went well in the end but daaaamn!

Not a bad experience but def kind of crazy: my friend sneaking us into the X consulate in Paris (won't rat out the country) to eat a homecooked meal in his boss's apartment LOL. As for bad moments: walking an hour to do my first intv in French in the winter at a posh prep school cause of the month-long strikes, waking up too late on a Sunday so having literally nothing to eat (hardly any delivery options, restos closed, supermarkets closed), getting fined 50 euros at CDG for not having an airport transfer ticket (how would I know?? the train just keeps going??). After I got through security, I realized an hour after chilling w un croissant et un café that i was supposed to be at ORLY!!!! lolllll.... the list could go on and on but we still love Paris.

I moved from NYC to Chicago in 2016 and thought it would be a fairly similar experience. Whew, was I wrong! Maybe because it was 2016 times were different than usual but the racism I experienced there was the worst & most violent I’ve ever experienced. Working in the “white” downtown area I was harassed so often by complete strangers on the train or out at restaurants. I was called the N word several times. At one restaurant a “gentleman” saw me, stood up from his table and screamed “f*** outta here you dirty n****!” Everyone in the restaurant heard him and did absolutely nothing about it. People threw things at me, purposely pushed rolling suitcases into me while I was just walking down the street... white women loved pushing me while I was waiting in lines at stores, then acting like they were deaf when I’d ask them to please be respectful. I eventually learned through talking to other Black people that this is very much how the culture of whiteness operates in the Midwest, and even though Chicago claims to be a modern, progressive city, it’s extremely segregated, redlined and racist. I’m glad I don’t live there anymore :)

I love your channel ! new subscriber here. Your video is goldmine for any person willing to come here : throw away your Emily in Paris vibes and listen to that lady please. Though I love my home city I have to say 100% of what you say is true. - Special mention to the dog poo, the habit I loathe the most in Paris. - Apartment hunt is mess especially if you don’t have a French guarantor, my American cousin went through the same hell. Tips for good value apartment hunting : you need to have ALL documents ready and with you on the day of the visit (job contract, tax fillings, payslip over a 4 month period, guarantor with the same info) so you can drop your application at the end of the visit. - As an ESSEC Alumni as well, I had to go through the annoyance of doing the Paris-Cergy commute for years (big up to my boi RER A) until I decided I had enough and decided to finish my Master’s in the UK. - Strikes : no comments lol - French Administration : no comments lol - 50 euros fine : haha ouch. To be honest agents are not that strict, however they sometimes enforce rules « à la gueule du client » aka depending on who they have in front of them. If you are French-speaking big thug-looking guy they might let you go but If you are a sweet foreign girl they might take avantage of that. But the opposite can apply. That’s the thing in France with administration, law enforcers etc…lots of rules, not really followed by the population, not really enforced, until they decide to do so and you end up with a fine.

@lyloni61934 жыл бұрын
@@TiffanieDavis now constant shutdown especially Long Isand Railroad. Metro north. NJ transit & Path, ( caused by infrastructure breakdowns & derailment.) MTA is bankrupted asking Washinton for help. Not to mention 3 separate incidents this week of people being pushed in front of trains since Monday.

Worst thing that's happened living abroad and in France: Getting into a fight with an older woman at the supermarket who physically pushed me then being told I pushed the woman first by people who weren't even watching, people threatening to call the gendarmes on me and being kicked out of the store finally.

Can't get over why there's no law to make people clean up after their dog, or do they just ignore it. Why aren't they fined?
@seeyu40114 жыл бұрын
There are laws, but in order to fine these dogs' owners, the police would need to catch them in the act, which mean being in each and every street in Paris at every moment... it's impossible. So we're just relying on people good will... mentality are slowly changing, let's hope it will go on this way!
@parnwine72404 жыл бұрын
Seriously, you are fined if you do not have your picture on your metro pass but they ignore dog walkers not picking up after their pets? That is not right.

It seems like the prefecture is like dealing with the Social Security Admin. office in the States. lolol I'm still laughing about you in the club. All I could think about was "see me up in the club" lol, then dealing with a messed up confrontation. But at 9:31 I was thinking "And...I...oop!" lolol This was overall a good video Tiffanie!! I'm even seeing differences in living abroad as well. It's just having to learn the culture and adjusting to what you think you can handle, which can be hard at times.

So let me get this straight… someone else’s boyfriend tried to get at you and she got mad, typical insecurities showing. Maybe that’s why i decided not to go live abroad there. Ole girl would’ve had a black eye. French or not, don’t put hands on me and i don’t touch you. 🤷🏾♀️👊🏾
