Kevin Costner's ego is unbelievable. In The Postman (1997) directed by and starring Kevin Costner, there is literally a scene where he shows up to a town of post-apocalyptic refugees and one of the guys there inexplicably begs Kevin Costner to impregnate his wife (followed by a sex scene). I'm not making this up and it's just as cringeworthy as it sounds especially once you realize he cast and likely wrote himself into that role.
@nerychristian

Well, to be fair, that kind of happened in the book. One of the village people setup up a rendezvous between the protagonist and the wife

@@nerychristian I'd have to imagine the scene is less cringeworthy in the book. I think it becomes hilarious though once you realize that Kevin Costner is both the main character and the director of the film adaptation. Like, he knew what he was doing.

You just reminded me of Dances with Wolves so I had to look up whether Costner had anything to do with the writing of that film? My instinct was correct! He directed and starred but didn’t write it because it was based on an existing book. That tells me everything I need to know about this multi part epic devised by Costner at the height of his ego being bruised while making Yellowstone. Ill give him credit like Francis Ford Coppola, both are at least putting up their own money to make these long gestating dream projects that no one seems to like? Lol

he fell into the common trope of any terrible multi part "epic": making Part 1 a boring Act 1-set up/character slog fest with little of the actual momentum or progression. A Part 1 like should be it's own story with beginning, middle, and end that leaves you wanting to see where the characters go further and how the world might develop (weird saying that about America lol) but instead it was a collection of scenes that felt like filler scenes in a western, which is the worst kind of filler. I can't even imagine trying to come up with a structure for a screenplay with a subject as broad as this so I totally understand why it's so aimless; what do you even do with this premise like "4- Part Frontier America Epic" that doesn't simply turn into a conventional western? It's clear this wasn't a "story idea" anyone had and more of a "filmmaking idea" I hate to say it as much as I dislike him, but he probably should have gotten Taylor Sheridan to come in and structure it maybe add some characterization and themes throughout. Heaven's Gate has more cohesion than this and that's an issue.

As the only human being in a comment section who has a middle of the road opinion on anything the truth is it was a bloated convoluted mess with two cool scenes the opening raid and the hot english wife bathing (sorry to offend people who dont like a bit of female nudity in a male directed film )One standout performance from Sam Worthington a actor ive never understood why he was pushed as a rising star for so long but i guess hes a good actor in very old fashioned 50s style romance scenes where a bit of cheesy overacting makes sense almost . That being said i would not call it a bad movie more of a movie that fell on its own ambitions then again it really was just three first acts so i will watch the sequels but im not that excited about them ,

I could not agree more. Even if the future chapters somehow magically correct every wrong and are able to develop strong characters and a decent story (which I highly doubt they will), then why even bother with this first chapter ever again? Why would anyone in their right mind ever return to rewatch this one? It still provides the audience with next to nothing. It's crazy to think that Costner had this property since the 80s, apparently, and was so passionate and hellbent about getting this movie made and having people see it. After having a script FOR DECADES, we end up with this giant, shallow nothing burger. I truly don't know what was going through the man's mind in justifying somehow thinking people would enjoy this.

I realize this portion of the review was just shooting the shit (and that I am also 2 months late), but to say that this movie lacked writing, characters, or plot seemed, to me, to be a disingenuous critique. I'd argue that even if you threw in the necessary "in my opinion, these things are bad" line, it doesn't really do this film justice. The plot is in chapter 1, I felt, was akin to giving the viewer multiple threads to follow as they begin their road to joining one another. I'd say the use of music was a bit cheesy, the acting was poor at times, and apparently some of the weapons weren't accurate for the timeline, but ultimately these things also existed for reasons that brought me to like this film: The music exists in an attempt to create a timeless "for all ages" feel (not my favorite, doesn't mesh well with a lot of the film clearly not being for all ages, but I still respect the attempt). The poor acting in some scenes I chalked up to kevin cosner using ill-experienced actors over other, bigger names. A lot of these characters are being played by no-names, and while there are always better talents out there, I felt the sacrifice made in using a cast that wasn't filled to the brim with at mid to top-tier names made up for itself by giving the film a greater sense of immersion, since I'm not being drawn out of each moment by trying to figure out where I recognize certain faces from. As for the weapons thing, I have no excuse for. I will say I read somewhere that the costume design was entirely on-point, which I took at face value, but maybe that's inaccurate. All of this to say that my respect for this film is greater than the film itself is quality, if that makes sense. It's a passion piece that valued its own vision over creating something digestable for the vast majority of audiences or, apparently, film critics who will feel that it somehow lacks writing, characters, or plot. I'd make a few changes to the film myself, probably revolving around editing stuff like overall tone in specific scenes in post, but that's the nature of movies like this: they don't really make changes in production based on what most people want out of them, but what the artist(s) want out of them. I'd give chapter 1 a 7/10. I feel bad for people who care about cinema being led to believe that a film like this isn't worth watching

@@womancarryingman I did enjoy this movie and disagree with Jake as I think it looks good but I fully agree it's just a tv show lol. So many plot threats and maybe only 1 has some kind of climax, pretty harsh offense to sell this as a full movie. Still, I did enjoy it and want to see part 2.

You guys should consider checking out The Bikeriders. It made for a decent date movie. It’s nothing too deep but Jodie Comer and Tom Hardy are crazy good in it and there are some interesting choices made. And no one is really talking about it so I want more videos discussing it lol.

There's no accounting for ignorance......I found this movie to be epic. No CGI which you people can't appreciate a movie without. Itx authentic, it's pace is mellow but it's dramatic, traumatic. It's your history of how America came to be, the struggles of your forefathers or don't you get it? This movie is surely setting the scene for the movies to come? I'm invested and looking forward to the following chapter. Perhaps it's one shortcoming is it needs a written introduction on screen for those who need to be spoon-fed as to what the movie is about.

I would just point out that you're taking a royal dump on a non-IP, largely independently funded auteur film that's trying to do something even remotely different by having a four-part structure. Why do that? You're convincing people not to go see the exact type of movie we all bitch and moan to see more of. Unnecessary and mean-spirited

Maybe you could watch a different creator owned IP that isn't over 3 hours long and is actually great. I'm sure that they exist.

If a movie sucks a movie sucks bro. We shouldn't give it brownie points for sucking just because of the circumstances in which it was made. He could have funded a better movie.

Judging solely from his interviews I feel like Costner wants to make a Western where the white people are the good guys and the Indians are the bad guys but he feels like he has to throw in a scene showing the Indians aren't completely bad guys because then people will get mad at him but it's half hearted.

Democrats and Lefties hate this show. This show is not a traditional movie or story. This is his Magnus Opus with his own money behind it. He understands Westward Expansion and appreciates the old movies as well as anyone. It’s a tribute to all of that. You remind me of the weak artist not understanding the need to work and help the others. I feel badly for your girl. It’s a slow story as intended. Go watch as someone wanting to understand that human struggle and the history. Then comment.
