My father is retired from Firestone, when he was there he tested the new batches of rubber to be used on the tire making line. Crews would wait for the ok to use that batch, if he called a batch a failure the crews would be extremely angry with him and tried to get him to ok bad rubber. The inspectors who wouldn't allow bad batches through were given unflattering nicknames and were mistreated by employees

Memories. I had a set of those Firestone 721 tires. Had one explode on the interstate while in a hard curve in the road. I also had a problem with Ford throttle cables. in 1974 I was 19. The throttle cable on my 1966 custom broke. The replacement was different. They had replaced the crimped on dust shield with what looked like a plastic soda straw. It was on the eye that connected to the carburetor. When you let off the throttle, The eye would hit the straw and cock a bit on an angle. after a while, this would cause the cable to break, usually at full throttle. I got ripped a new one by a Ford engineer for being a "smart ass punk kid". A while later and a few death because of it, the cable was recalled. And don't forget about Aquadots. it was a kid's toy. It turned into GHB, the "Date Rape Drug" when ingested.

The Ford/Firestone tire issue was both parties fault. Before the recall the recommended air pressure per Ford according to the Explorer door placard was 26psi. That was far too low for the vehicle to start with, and if memory serves Firestone told Ford that fact, but Ford bullied them into green lighting that air pressure because the Explorer had shitty ride quality. Couple already low air pressure with people being lazy and not checking their tire pressure, you had Explorers driving in southwestern states in the middle of summer with 15-20psi. Tires are vulcanized together with heat and in turn can separate from excessive heat. The lower the air pressure the higher the rolling resistance, which means higher operating temperature. After the recalls/lawsuits, Ford changed the recommended air pressure on the door placard for the Explorer to 33 psi front, 35 psi rear. Sorry, just I’ve just worked a long time in the automotive and tire field. It drives me nuts when people only blame Firestone for the incident. There’s people that to this day will not buy Firestone or Bridgestone because of this, yet they continue to buy Fords.

@donmiller29085 жыл бұрын
That's interesting. I've always heard the tires were defective because Firestone workers were on strike for better wages/working conditions. Instead of meeting with union reps to discuss matters, Firestone decided to hire scabs who didn't have the knowledge/experience necessary to meet quality control standards/guidelines. As a result the tires were defective.
@Mystwarrior15 жыл бұрын
Actually the ford/firestone fiasco was mainly the fault of ford. When people complained to ford about the tipping/top heavy they were actually INSTRUCTED by ford employees to let some air out of the tires. And with the high velocity spinning of the tires on freeway with under inflated tires it was an explosion waiting to happen. Unfortunately its been 10 yrs since i remember the actual chemistry makeup of what happens that makes the tires explode due to under inflation but yeah. Ford was at fault and tried to put the blame on firestone so that they could avoid the heat. And that's why it was top heavy argument vs under inflate argument.

@bradencollins30684 жыл бұрын
What you are saying is, basically, that Dodge is just as bad as Ford. All car makers have at least one pretty bad recall in their history, but ford knew that the Pinto would blow up when it was rear-ended and they sold it anyway. Crown Vics had a similar problem, and they had a long, ongoing problem with sudden unintended acceleration, which was a problem with the cruise control. Yes, many other car companies have serious issues, like the Corvair, but Ford has a crappy reputation when it comes to safety. All companies in general are willing to let people die for a profit. But the pinto was ridiculous. So, yes, he went after Ford. The reason he did do so in the first place was because it was one of the most documented recalls in history. Sorry for my speech there, my brain is kinda unfiltered right now. (Pretty, Mustang, by the way!)

They did have one good suspect, someone who confessed and asked for a ransom to make the killings stopped. Nothing was ever proven though. If you're not from the Chicago area then you wouldn't know, but looking at the locations of the victims you could see they didn't buy these pills from the same store. Chicago is a big city with a lot of drug stores. It was spread out very wide. This was most likely done in a warehouse. I read a book about this case several years ago.

That's James William Lewis. He went to jail for attempting to extort money from Johnson&Johnson. He claimed that the poisoning would stop if they paid him some millions of dollars. The problem is that they had evidence for the extortion but not for the poisoning so they could only charge him for what they had evidence for. As it turned out, the Note 7's problems truly _weren't_ Samsung's fault - they just had the bad luck to get two faulty-battery suppliers in a row. After recall #2, they finally got a battery supplier whose wares _weren't_ faulty, and refurbished and resold many of the returned Note 7s (mainly in the Korean domestic market), now equipped with good batteries. To avoid the bad publicity associated with the Note 7 name, these Note 7s were marketed as the "Note Fan Edition"; no Fan Editions have spontaneously exploded so far.

Also quite shocking was the Thalidomide scandal around 1960. The drug, named "Contergan" was sold as tranquilizer and consumed probably by millions of people. The aftermath was severe and horrible. Contergan was utterly teratogenic. Pregnant women that took the drug during the pregnancy, got birth to children without arms and legs. Not in one or two incidences but up to 10000 (plus uncounted stillbirths). The case is nowadays almost forgotten in the public, but the consequence of this (and maybe other) scandal was that organizations like the FDA requires now extremely through tests of drugs, before they got clearance for the market.

I was thinking of the Toyota recall a few years back where the accelerators were jamming and cars couldn't be stopped even if you stood on the brakes. Several deaths from that one, too. Don't know why people didn't just shut the ignitions off; but when you're panicking it's hard to think of things like that; it's something you need to think of ahead of time so it's already in your head. For one car that crashed into an intersection, killing everyone in it, there's a voice recording, because someone in the car called someone else in a panic and I think it was left as a voice message or something. :/ Ford's not the only manufacturer with recalls because of deaths by a long shot.
@donkmeister5 жыл бұрын
@@KryssLaBryn the Toyota one resulted in a few copycat incidents (I'm aware of a woman in the US in a Kia or Hyundai, and a man in France in a Renault) where there was nothing wrong with the vehicle and suspicion was they were delusional attention seekers. Funny thing is, any roadworthy vehicle has brakes that are more powerful than the engine, especially at high speed where the drive torque at the wheels is lower due to gearing. The engine running at full power will increase stopping distance, but will not prevent stopping.
