WORST Reverse Camera in a Porsche - REPLACED!!

In this video, I shared my experience replacing the rear view camera of my 2015 Porsche Macan S. It is inexplicable why Porsche used such a bad quality camera in their vehicles. I remember complaining about this issue to the dealer many years ago when I got my Macan in 2014, but they said nothing could be done. I ordered my Macan in June 2014 and took delivery in November 2014, and the quality of the rear view camera video was as bad then as it was today.
Well, I did something about it. Got a newer generation camera and decided to try it on. And it worked. The image is not the best I've seen from this new camera, but it improved the image 300%.

I've got the original one, but on the small PCM screen it's good enough. Great to know this tweak, but sucks that it takes PIWIS to calibrate the thing. Nevertheless, great tutorial!

Thanks for the excellent video! Do you know when the change was made to the camera versions? I have a 2017 and the image is not good. I'm wondering if this would improve it, but looking at some ebay listings, they show a 2017 with the new part number.

I think 2017 was already better than what I had in my 2015. 2015 was really bad. I’m not sure when this last version of the rear view camera was manufactured, it might had been for 2018 model, but I don’t really know. The image of this new camera I installed is not perfect, but is 1000% better than what I had. Thanks for your kind words! And for your support!

That is very cool. They seem to have emulated the stock Porsche launcher almost to perfection. I wish my similar ZWNAV unit in my Panamera looked as good as that 'out of the box'. Great video - thanks for taking the time.

What's the name of the software you use for coding the Macan and connector

Why do you disconnect and remove the wiring in the trunk next to the fuse at the 1:05 minute mark? I don't see you going back and replacing those. Is it possible you would not need to remove that harness?

Apologies if it wasn’t clear. That harness is part of the bumper apron I’m removing. Is for all the radar sensors, rear view camera and rear reflectors that are installed in that bumper. So, you need to disconnect them and take the harness out with the bumper. No way around it. And towards the end of the video I believe I show connecting everything back…

HI Santirx - thank you for a very good video once again. I'm thinking of changing out my tail lights to euro spec and realized that it requires a bumper removal, so this will be very useful. While I'm at it, I may change the camera too but do you know if the new one would still require programming if I have the OEM center console on a 2016?

Thanks a lot! Your words mean a lot! Coding or adaptation is necessary for many new components. It doesn’t have anything to do with the head unit, but rather, you need to tell the camera controller that there is a new camera. So, in short, yes, you will need to code.

An alternative Santirx could have used would be to run an aftermarket HD camera to the same location as the low rent OEM camera and then hook up via his new HU. It's even more work, of course, but it would have avoided the need for coding. So many things on modern Porsches need coding to the car. That's how I did it on my wife's Cayman. The hardest part is the wiring from front to back of the car. Hooking it into the aftermarket HU is very simple.

@@rodrigovolks3943 is your camera not working anymore? I didn’t have to add a long code when I code my camera. You just add the camera and go through the appropriate routine in maintenance tab.

Can you use launch x431 to code or can you only use PIWIS?

@@staf819 I don’t think you can use X431. This will require a module coding/commissioning that I haven’t seen in my Otofix or Launch X431. It will require PIWIS in my opinion.

please clarify, this camera i see it on sale on ebay but they say if fits macan from 2019. You have a 2015 macan but you have a new touch radio different from the original. I also have a 2015 macan and still have the original radio/touch screen. does this camera is compatible with standard 2015 macan radio ??

For the camera, I show the specific part numbers in the video. There are some that claim to fit, but don’t fit. It needs to have same 2 connectors. On the head unit, that doesnt matter. The video camera sends a video signal to the control module and that sends the signal to a screen. Whether you have the PCM3.1 or an aftermarket unit, as long as you can connect the feed, it should work. The key is that you need to re-code the new camera to the control module using PIWIS.

Yes, they are good to have. Although you could manage to lift with the supplied rubber blocks.

Hey Ruben! The camera is OEM. I got it from factoryxenon.com for $158.
