FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

This may have been covered by another person, but if tower is going to extend your downwind on a circle, you can always climb up to Cat D or E mins and extend your distance to 2.3 or 4.5 miles of protected airspace. Obviously, you will still need the ceiling and vis to support that.

Even though you have a Sid in the us at some small satellite airports depending on the airspace the Sid is non compliant because of radar vectors to keep you out of commercial traffic. This is very true for military aircraft.

@Stephen Newman. (repost) I believe each pilot has to use his/her own judgement and interpretations. Some commercial pilots log all their VFR "Flight Time" as "Actual Instrument Time". That's not right but they do it anyway. As a GA pilot I use "Air Time" in a Redbird for logging the 6-6-6 for " Ground Instrument Time". Some say you need an instructor, but no you don't if you have a current IFR rating. If I am in the real aircraft, I use foggles and a safety "pilot", (emphasis on pilot) not my unqualified friend. I then log "Simulated Instrument Time" for the time between putting the foggles/hood on and off. Some pilots I know also log "Simulator Time" (not simulated instrument time) and "IFR Time" which is the time they are in the IFR System. That is why I say each pilot must use their own judgement, so I wouldn't worry about any criticism. I also liked the video because there is always something that happens that spoils your plan. It is great to see how a professional handles it. What I didn't hear in the video was mention of cold weather corrections to altitudes. That's my $.02 for feedback. Great job.

@Flightchops Thank you for your videos, amazing production. Just one comment though, you have mentioned a few times about the RV14 and 'IFR platform'. I absolutely love the Vans aircraft! However, I would strongly urge you to speak with some long term RV owners about flying in instrument conditions. The issue is simply, they are slippery aircraft and will build speed very fast in a dive. In IMC that carries the need for an awareness that it can very easily get away from you if you become distracted. I do not own an RV however have had a conversation with an RV owner who has himself built 3 RV's over the years. He had a conviction that RV's are really VFR only aircraft. Anyway, no doubt this is something you have already considered.

1:16 What? 6 hrs and 6 approaches within 6 months?; You Canadians are lucky. Down here in the U.S. while I don't think there's a minimum hrs rule (I'll have to double check that.), there is a minimum of 6 holds, 6 course intercepts and 6 miss-approaches in addition to the approaches themselves. Otherwise it an Instrument Proficiency every six months. Anyway good luck on your instrument rating; you're much farther ahead then I've ever gotten at the time of this post.

Great stuff as always, Steve! 👍👍 Question - what is it about a Mooney that I always read that it's "challenging" for a beginner to fly?
@Ohdub1
@Ohdub1 5 жыл бұрын
Mooneys aren't hard to fly, but they don't make good primary trainers as they are fast and have the added complexity of a constant speed prop and retractable gear. Some people do learn to fly in them but, I think it would be easier to learn in a slower, less complex airplane so that you have more time to think and fewer things to think about.

Great video Steve! Was wondering if you could ask your ATC buddy a quesiton for me (or maybe you know the answer)? If I wanted to get a low approach in my C172, over a runway at CYYZ (inactive - to avoid holding up anyone), what would be the best way to go about requesting that? Try calling Toronto centre/approach well ahead of time? Maybe on the ground over the phone to coordinate a time that works for them? There's more then one way to skin a cat but since you have an ATC buddy i'd like to know his thoughts on this as well as yours. Any help is appreciated. Cheers! Ryan

There is no way you can do this and not either be under the hood or in actual. And then partial panel with no hood on? Ridiculous. I love your videos, but not sure I would have posted this one. @midlifeflyer

You ask an interesting question. In the US, the rule is, you must be using a view-limiting device in visual conditions to count for instrument currency (proficiency is a separate question). Is the rule the same or different in Canada? I don't know, but I have heard a few different variations through the years.

I don't disagree with you, I normally wear a hood to practice. As it turned out, this was the first nice VFR day that we'd had in a long time and it was a weekend so everyone was out flying. The decision was made that since I had just flown a bunch of approaches a few days earlier that I would go without the hood to better be able to watch for traffic - there was a lot of it.
