Sorry for the late arrival on this one everyone... I've been racing at Anglesey this weekend in the Civic & MR2 and forgot to schedule this to go live at 8am! Hopefully that hasn't annoyed the algorithm gods as that timeslot has been working pretty good lately take it easy

Think a rewire of the EG is needed for the off session buddy, full looms are cheap enough nowadays and it will bring peace of mind. Good even though you did have issues, keep them coming.

I think you can get full chassis harnesses for a PDM for the Civic, that would massively simplify all the rats nest going on, and no fuses needed.

I have a deadweight in my 1 series and when the alternator cable decided to leave the chat the deadweight went to sleep and shut the car down before the car showed a charging light. I’ve previously had an alternator fail while on the standard battery and the car showed 2 stages of light then started losing headlights and speedo before the car finally shut off. The deadweight must just be really aggressive with how soon it goes into sleep mode when it detects low charging.

The best (admittedly large amount of) money I spent on my car was a full custom engine and chassis loom by Racing Circuits. My wiring was shite and I knew I'd have problems with it down the line, such peace of mind having that all done

Interesting I had the same issue with my deadweight battery, spiking to nearly 18v on WOT (this was on a track day!) - was fine cruising round town and also with the lead acid battery. Had to put the dw battery on charge to reset the onboard bms, and been ok.

I run a Astra / Zafira EHPS on my DC5, wouldn’t run an OEM pump now. Had no end of issues on my old DC5 with the pump, they are old and nobody makes replacements. Picked up the Astra pump for £20 from scrap yard, made lines and wired it up and it’s good to go. Would recommend 👍🏼

I feel your trackday frustration :( Alternator regulator i would expect - one thing to bear in mind is the alternator does need a bit of cool airflow or the regulator can't keep cool - it basically turns the excess voltage into heat. Just mentioning in case airflow around it has changed.

Slightly different set up on a bike, but it that was happening, it would definitely be regulator/rectifier failing, which in turn, would fry the battery too
@seanandersen5752 Жыл бұрын
Don't you have to run a mosfet type regulator tho if you have these lithium batterys

My starlet doesn't have power steering and that coupled with anti lift kit and bigger than stock wheels means It's just too heavy off centre around 90 degrees and causes me to do the same as you did cos I couldn't physically turn the wheel with hands at 9 and 3. Got 2 old ford escorts the same and I'd definitely want power steering with them too.

Leccy issues can be a real pain, I speak from recent experience with a car that runs an external diode cable instead of a conventional regulator set up in the alternator. I know, mental. Similarly mental getting under an e46 with just a jack (yes jack stand on the other side), your H&S advisor must have been barking mad at you for that, chuck another axle stand or at least a wheel under there just incase next time. Stay safe Danny, we need these regular updates! There was an old evo article where I think Richard Meaden remarked that he was put off by the lightness of the steering on an endurance racer to its driver (996 gt1 LM car?/can’t recall the driver?) and they replied ‘I think you’ll find its perfectly fine after a long stint.’ Comfortable control = greater ability to pursue speed! PAS worth the weight/ maybe you can lose some more in the wiring instead?

Electrical Gremlins😢 My thoughts are it's more than likely an Alternator issue. Because you've taken out the power steering pump the Alternator maybe spinning faster and if the regulator on the Alternator isn't compensating than will have an over voltage giving you the 16v on the Lithium and your Redtop cutting out, your wideband issues and your Garmin playing up!! I maybe wrong but it seems to much of a coincidence for it all to happen after the Power steering taken out🤔
@aaronalp2639 Жыл бұрын
On a completely random suggestion, could you lift the limiter to about 8500 rather than the 8k it seems to be at? Looked like you were perhaps running out of legs a wee bit in a few spots that an extra 500 or so rpm would have just about seen you through rather than hitting the limiter. Not sure if that would help lap times or specifically that track!

Probably a dud regulator or connector to the regulator and then the alternator overcharged the battery to the 16.5-18.0V you showed and mentioned. LiPos will self disconnect if over volted and this disconnect can cause alternators to then fail due to the back EMF of a battery suddenly disconnecting and the charge from the alternator having nowhere to go but back into the alternator windings. Either the back EMF or over voltage may have then blown your lap timer's fuse and caused problems with the EGT, and ultimately the alternator melted itself and stopped charging and your EGT was happy again at battery voltage so you went on track, then after track work your LiPo's internal BMS hit low voltage cut-off to save itself. I'm wondering what caused the regulator to fail in the first place... make sure the wire into the voltage regulator that senses battery voltage is seeing battery voltage, and that the regulator ground is good.
@dannyDC2 Жыл бұрын
Excellent reply, just catching up on comments. The previous engine did let go with quite a lot of smoke so perhaps the internals of the alternator got a soaking from that? That's all I can think of

4:10 did I understand correctly? There will be an answer to these electrical mysteries, but not in this video? Because in this video there was no definite problem reveal. Could be this or could be that. p.s. Integra is a legend. You think Daniel has borrowed everything possible from her. But NO, another part is taken and put to good use on Civic.

Going off the comments and footage Craigoverend ‘ comment sounds like the cause and I’d tend to agree. A loose change wire from the alt could have also caused a failure when hitting the rumble strip hard . Leading to voltage regulator failure . Had one fail before once on a road car and smoked the battery. 🫣 Jobs to do list- Junk any old wiring not needed Re wire / tidy original loom n check Fit an Anderson connector for charging / jump starting. New voltage regulator plus a spare . Use a merc auxiliary battery isolator instead of the autolec Get some aftermarket bike PDMs and junk some fuses. Revert back to original PS Or use a switched electric pump so it can be turned off in the wet. . Sell me your 46 😂
