"off-brand europe" is now my favorite way of describing every isekai world ever
@maria.skorik Жыл бұрын
As a fashion history nerd the off-brand Europe setting drives me crazy. The women's dresses range anywhere from the 1400s to 1890s to modern prom dress. The men are wearing modern suits, and occasionally 1700s military uniforms. And everyone is wearing their hair down in loose beach waves like it's 2014. I know you can't expect a Korean comic artist to be an expert on European fashion history, but it would be so cool if there were a few details that made the setting feel more believable. For example, a woman would never be seen in public with her hair down or without gloves, and putting her in that situation would show vulnerability.

If I had a nickel for every webtoon I read about a young orphan girl adopted into a noble family to replace their dead daughter only to be harassed and abused by her new family until they eventually kill her resulting in her regressing to the midpoint in her relationship with that family and allowing her to change the future while also uncovering her magical abilities and pursuing a dark haired love interest, I'd have two nickels. I can see where it can get annoying; But I think the scrolling panel works best for like you said. For more short story style comics; But that is just me. I try to read a bunch of different ones. As a korean who read webtoons for 10+ years now most of this really has to do with the fundamental 'weekly' system. The artists are expected to draw 50-80 colored panels every week. It's known that they are always overworked even if it's a team of artists and it leads to boring compositions, angles and similar story arcs imo. Also, webtoons used to be completely free but now it's more normalised to pay for the episodes, which I respect. Ads were not enough to give artists salary. And as a comment to people complaining about paying at all, let's not go there... There are numerous resources, not only the artist but editors, platforms etc and if u somehow can read it free at least once that's already a big deal.
@Mrhellslayerz Жыл бұрын
Yeah, to be honest, I don't see paying for a chapter each as a huge issue. As far as I know, it's no different to paying for a volume of a manga/manwah, or an episode of anime. Plus, paying $10-$20 is more rewarding than paying $50-$100 for an illustration, and it's a more stable and consistent income for the artist as well.

I want to see an isekai webcomic that has a woman in an abusive relationship get transported to a world that has nothing to do with any media she has consumed, and then she sort of learns to live there over time and has to deal with her trauma. No random spontaneous love interest bs. Only a love interest if they’re completely non toxic and help her learn to love herself

This isn’t really a trope, but a common thing I’ve noticed in webtoons that really annoys me is words in asterisks for actions that are already happening on screen. Words like hug, shove, kiss, etc. It completely takes me out of the moment. Like, you’re already drawing the action! I can tell that the characters are hugging because you drew that!

The only time that action asterisks are useful is in hentai, thriller and action, I guess they intensify the moment. Like in action when the person falls on something and it makes a very specific *tong or In thriller when the villains footsteps are closing in but they're not in frame from the victim's perspective so they put the asterisks of *footsteps sound or any other one, or in hentai when you know certain asterisks intensify certain actions coz they're acting as a representation for the sounds that we can't hear

Regarding the first trope, that’s why I love The Remarried Empress. You’re able to get a revenge story without 1. Isekai or 2. The main character actively seeking the revenge out. The actions of the people that have either wronged her or hate her are their own downfall, and she’s just watching it happen. Plus, living happily without them in your life can be it’s own best revenge, and that’s what she’s doing.
@kn-jt9dj Жыл бұрын
Tbh, Remarried Empress also has an issue where it takes a medieval setting and factors in all the complexities of it (caste systems, nobility, reputation, slavery) but then tries to build characters who are supposed to be "revolutionary" but never break out of those systems For example, slavery is a very common practice in Remarried Empress: Navier and Sovieshu are fine with letting it happen and were on okayish terms with Viscount Roteshu (a slave owner) until he started conniving with a slave (Rashta) against them to get what he wants Navier takes Viscount Roteshu's daughter (someone who hated Rashta for getting with her brother and wanting to run away with him) under her wing, and this is supposed to be "cute" irony And so on It's even stranger in the novel because (spoilers) (spoilers) (spoilers) Sovieshu loses his memory and Rashta (the slave) is executed for bearing a child that wasn't his Even though Sovieshu is the guy who caused Navier the most pain and shares the burden of endorsing slavery within their kingdom, Rashta has to bear the brunt of it even if it's something she had no idea about, and the story can't acknowledge that because Sovieshu isn't mentally aware enough to take blame aside from being heartbroken that he lost Navier (Spoiler over) I used to like the series, nowadays I'm meh about it because I have a hard time actually rooting for Navier since her careless view on slavery inadvertently led to God knows how many innocent people living in destitute servitude (Rashta was enslaved through no fault of her own, but because her dad sold her off to pay his debts)
@shantelygarcia3650 Жыл бұрын
@@kn-jt9dj those are actually excellent points! I didn’t think of that.

@@shantelygarcia3650 that's understandable, it took me a long while before I saw a critique of slavery in the story, and realized "hey wait a minute, The viscount has thousands of slaves and Navier's fine with this? I thought she cared about her citizens?" And to be frank, there are definitely things to like about Remarried Empress: the multi-faceted characters, the 4-d chess, the drama - it's perfectly fine to like the series despite the flaws But the story tends to harm itself by including characters who are meant to be revolutionary but operate and benefit _within_ oppressive systems instead of breaking them down when they have the influence to do so

I think a webcomic that does the whole "scrolling, dispersed text bubbles, made for phones" style is Heaven Official's Blessing. Spreading the text over multiple panels adds a sense of anticipation, but the art is so detailed and beautiful that there's so much to look at that it doesn't become boring. Edit: the only issue is that it's hosted on a platform that does micro transactions. Technically they aren't required, but if you don't pay you have to wait an incrementally longer period of time to read the next episode. (1 minute, 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hrs, 24 hrs, then it repeats). It's really irritating, especially when you're waiting for the next update and then you have to wait an additional few hours to actually read the newly released episode

I do enjoy some of those reborn-isekai or I-died-and-get-to-start-over-again stories but they're definitely SUPER oversaturated, which wouldn't be so exhausting if they didn't feel like regurgitated stories with slightly different characters. Some of them are really good and have actual interesting plot hooks (Empress' Lipstick and Long After The Ending are REALLY good for this) but too many of them are frustratingly similar to each other. I do wish some webtoon creators wouldn't space out their comics so much with unnecessary panels for JUST ONE WORD BUBBLE but I'm not super pressed about it. I definitely prefer the new vertical scrolling style in a lot of aspects because of the formatting of the app. Page-style makes it impossible to read or see details, so at least for Webtoon and other similar apps' formatting, the vertical just makes more sense and makes it easier for me to appreciate the art.

I can immediately see one problem with this model. To encourage people to pay to see the next chapter, you have to insert a lot of mini-cliffhangers, whether the story needs them or not. So now everything reads like "The Perils of Pauline." It distracts from the interactive experience that weekly comics have between the readers and the author. It becomes less about the story and more about the microtransactions.

It’s funny that you mentioned the prevalence of “reborn as a villainess” comics since they’re my guilty pleasure! I admit that a lot of the ones on the Webtoon platform aren’t very well written, however there is one called “My In-Laws are Obsessed With Me” that I love. I didn’t really expect much when I clicked on it (especially because of the title) but I’m so I did. It’s set in the same vaguely European world you mentioned (though the mc isn’t from our world, she time travels after she’s murdered instead). The depth of the characters and visual storytelling is stellar; there have been moments that have hit me hard because the pacing of the panels. The male lead isn’t a tyrant, more of a sad and awkward guy, and he faces consequences when he does wrong to the protagonist. I just wanted to put that out there since it is a great read. :)

I love that one! I like Beware the Villainess on Tapas too. I like the genre but I am starting to feel very picky about it. I don't like it when they just...skip past interesting or conflict-filled parts. When they work, there's the drama of feeling doomed by your fate or circumstance, and trying to overcome a terrible reputation and the trauma that comes with it. Villainess Turns the Hourglass was also great because it really acknowledged how much the heroine is not...really just a great person out of nowhere and she still has baggage.

I myself don't mind the "reborn into a book/game/novel" genre at all, because as a person who has read more than their fair share of them, it eventually becomes a game of sorts to see how the author can make their story unique and outshine the rest. This genre has its own gems that are absolutely worth the read, but finding them is always a struggle since you must go through a lot of mediocrity first.

@allisontrouten6891 Жыл бұрын
I have a few that break from the mold (as far as I know. I only read a few of these and they all have pretty unique storylines) From a Knight to a Lady A knight is killed by someone she trusted and is thrown into the body of a girl who (maybe???) died after jumping into a lake because her lover told her to. It's all about the knight figuring out how to save the kingdom she was defending and it has a sweet love interest who falls for her first. Reporting for duty, Duchess! This is a newer one. A military woman is killed and ends up playing the meek side character in her friends romance novel. She says f that and decides to make this girl strong. It also has a surprise villian :) The Tyrant wants to be good A girl kills her brother because (daddy issues mainly lol) she thought she deserved the throne more than him. She is killed during her tyrannical rule and is reborn in the same body. Now she is trying to live peacefully and work through her trauma! I'm the queen in this life A woman does everything to make her fiancé the king but he ends up killing her and marrying her pretty half sister. So when she wakes up in her younger body (either teen or young adult I don't really know) she decides that instead of spending her life and body to make a man king she is going to make herself queen no matter what. This one is pretty damn cathartic and it's funny as hell to watch her ex-fiancé fall for her while she wants absolutely nothing to do with him

The isekai fl flood is both a curse and a blessing. There's so many that you can filter through the bad ones and find a good one and you'll never run out of stories. Unfortunately they overcrowd the webtoon spaces, so it makes searching the romance tag a bit tedious if you're not in the mood for it. A personal recommendation for a webcomic about a fl who died a few times prior and now has another chance at life: The Broken Ring : This Marriage Will Fail Anyway It's REALLY spicy though! Like seriously, they buckabang a lot. I mean it, this is smut territory. It's so damn well written though and I really like the pacing and paneling. I actually really like the scrolling layout ( coming from someone who only reads Webcomics on my phone). I definitely don't like the big spaces in-between either, but technically you could put it in the other layout too. With the scrolling type - if the Webcomic is well done - it feels like you're watching a show because the page doesn't give away everything. You see one scene at a time and I really like that :) It makes things more shocking when you have to do the pasting yourself.

I AGREE WITH THE PAYING TO READ. It's super annoying when i find a webcomic i like, but i need to pay to read it. With Webtoon introducing daily pass on on-going webtoons, i find it difficult to keep up. And with other sites literally allowing the readers only a few episodes at a time before locking the last 10-20 episodes (like Tapas), its unsatisfactory, since i couldnt get to the conclusion. This leads to the obvious illegal uploading of comics. But unfortunately for readers who cant afford to pay the artist, they will use these sites methods enjoy some comics. Touching on the daily pass, i hate it when it's done with really big webtoons, like Hooky or Nobless, since i can only read two out of 400 something chapters at a time. Its time consuming, thus causes people to give up
@wingedgirl7035 Жыл бұрын
I seriously feel that lock one. There's this one webtoon I read called "I love yoo" and it's pretty good but can be slow paced at times. There was this part and it was pretty much just a flash back arc and it took SO LONG. These episodes come out weekly which means that for like four months I was reading these black and white flashback episodes nearly forgetting what's going on present day. I kept with it but it was excruciating.

Yo, artist of a (currently unpublished) webtoon here. Webtoon follows vertical scroll format, and I wanted to elaborate on how vertical scroll can be used. I understand how it can feel slow and generally uninteresting if done that way, but if the artist knows what they’re doing, it can be an amazing tool. Panels and scroll are both equally good, but for different reasons. Some of the things I like about scroll is, like you said, the pacing- personally, I think it’s more immersive. More than that though, I think the scroll does an amazing job of communicating movement. If done right, panels can almost have an animated feel. Just wanted to give you a different perspective :) love your videos!

My favorites on webtoon of this genre are remarried empress(not an exact clone but def similar vibes) and death is the only end for the villainess. The latter especially, because she violently dislikes most of the romantic leads, but the way the world works is they'll literally kill her if she doesn't find ways to protect, defend, seduce, and so on. nice lil subversion and the art styles pretty. Oh and congrats on the physical book!
@stingingcake853 Жыл бұрын
Those are definitely two examples on the opposite end of the "vIllainess" subgenre. Like, Remarried Empress is the villainess story without any time travel or isekai (which is why it stands out, as a lot of stories don't really need that element to work, but throw it in anyways because genre convention), and then Death is the only end for a Villainess only works because it's an isekai and that element directly ties into the character and plot. Both are probably in my top ten of webcomics currently

My first introduction to Isekai was in 7th grade after being lent a manga called Fushigi Yuugi: The Mysterious Play. It was, and still is, one of my fav manga (despite its many problems). My understanding of the Isekai genre was painted by the stories of young awkward girls overcoming their awkward phase and growing into a mature young woman. Even Inuyasha follows that format. It wasn't until about... 10th grade that the genre of Isekai seemed to focus on boys in videogames moreso than girls overcoming the awkward bridge between girlhood and womanhood. I am not a fan of the constant toxicity or "dark romance" aspect of this newer take on Isekai. HOWEVER I am a fan of the genre shifting back towards young girls. Mostly because it's only a matter of time before transwomen get ahold of it and pave the way for the rest of us queers.

I'm also super tired of the female isekais but they're also super addictive. I had a super unhealthy period around Christmas where I would stay awake the whole night reading 120 chapters. I would scroll until my hand started to hurt and start scrolling with my other hand. Most of them were ongoing so I started reading new ones and would have to reread parts when I came back because all of the plots are so simulare. I do love" The Broken Ring: This Marrige Will Fail Anyway" though. Instantly fell in love with the way they drew the main leads to the point I drew them in my sketchbook

about the scrolls comics: they are formatted that way for 3 reasons; 1. so that the reader can read the story faster and therefore chew thought the chapters faster. 2. Economizes time while making them, webtoon artists will often release their comics in big patches or they will have a deadline, some artists deliver a chapter a week so that's why the comics need to be formatted in that way. 3.Making easier to read, this style of webtoon was popularized in Korea and is often read by Korean students that stay most of the time in their phones and officeworks. This comics are made that way for a reason, is simply not affordable to do a full comic panel with backgrounds and ground breaking panels, it would take too much time to do this and time equals money (unfortunately) (there is more reasons but those 3 are more important)

I know why artists do this, it saves a lot of time, and it can help you figure out the perspective of an item at a weird angle.
