So my worst whisky purchase of 2023 is kinda crazy. My neighbor _gave_ me a bottle of Uncle Nearest Rye. He let me know that he did NOT like it... I mean he *really* oversold it... I cracked that bad boy open a week later and instantly regretted it. Oh it was terrible, like sour paint thinner. It's not even good when it's free.

Regarding your comment regarding your palate vs Fred’s and Jason’s- yours is very different than Fred’s. Usually (90% CI), if you like it, I will like it. Most of the time when Fred gushes over something, I don’t like it. So - if Fred likes it and you don’t, I won’t buy it.

You my friend have noticed the difference between someone that doesnt buy much of their own whiskey and doesnt want distilleries to stop sending them free whiskey, someone that buys a decent amount of their own whiskey and wants more distilleries to send them more free whiskey so he doesnt have to spend so much on whiskey, and someone that buys most of their own whiskey and keeps it honest.

My biggest loser this year was a MWND. The $150 price tag was far too much considering it’s worse than older batches. It’s one note of straight wine and doesn’t have any of the spice notes listed on the bottle. Probably avoiding their brand all together with that pricing.

Im not a huge fan of bookers, but i have the little book in retrospect and really like it. It doesnt have that typical beam nuttiness other bookers and beam products have. I wouldnt have bought it, my brother got it for me for xmas. I swear, he only spent that much ($150) to get it for me so he could try it and not spend that much for a bottle for himself n get bitched at by his wife haha. But yea, even not being much of a bookers fan, retrospect is pretty good. Again, i wouldnt by it myself, but its not a bad bottle. Another i was surprised to see, old fitz 10. I got the old fitz 8yr ina raffle for $125. I didnt have high hopes for it being an 8yr HH product, but its really good. Im surprised he didnt like the 10yr. For the 8yr, its 125 good, but not 175 good, which im happy i won in a raffle and didnt buy it when i seen it before the raffle for 300, or the 10yr for 350 a few days after i seen the 8yr.

My biggest surprise this year was the Remus Highest Rye Bourbon. Seriously, get it. It has a nice depth of flavor especially if you are a rye fan. 51% corn, 39% rye, 10% malted rye. 6yr. 100% on my buy again list.

I like the Willett Family Estate Rye 4 year old bottles but they can be very hit and miss. My unprofessional secret is that the lower proof bottles seem to be better than the higher proofs like 105 proof vs 110 proof. I just saw a bottle of that Twisted Tea whiskey on the shelf today and I said no way. Cheers Matt!

I never buy picks from grocery stores. I don't think they have anybody that knows anything making the pick. I think they just want something on the shelf. The exception here is Bourbon Baller's store. He has a great palate and none of his picks have been bad.

There are definitely some grocery stores that have a absolute kick ass buyer. Take a chance on a low-priced pick, see if you jive with their tasting, then trust a second bottle and so on. I usually do this until I get burned once or twice.

I just tried the Old Fitz 10 at a bar today, and while I enjoyed it, I have to agree with you. It's not complex enough or satisfying enough for me to buy a bottle of it for what stores charge for it. According to a friend of mine, the youngest Old Fitz bottles usually aren't worth it, but the older ones are generally better. Even if that's true though, I still doubt I'd want to be spending multiple hundreds of dollars for a 19 year.

My worst whiskey purchase of the year: Pure Kentucky. The first thought I had when I just tasted it now is that it tastes like a "whiskey substitute", whatever that is. I get a super strong cedar note that I don't like. It reminds me of Willett 4-Year which I also don't like. I tried the Willett in a bar and I was super glad that I never bought a bottle.

Glad I was able to return my LB 7 to total wine after sampling a friends bottle. It has a wonderful nose, but is just horrid on the palate for me. Dill Pickle. Worst things I bought all year. 1792 Sweet Wheat and Maker's BEP come to mind. I also paid 110 for an Angels Envy pick, that just isn't very good for that price.

Have you tried rootshoot single malt BiB. Decent, scotch like and reasonable priced. Laws stuff has gone too high for me. Decent. Leopold 2 and 4 were good to me. Deerhammer straight was not good to me. Thanks for the heads up.

Regrets, I have had a few (cue the music). I’m sorry I felt the FOMO on Ohio single barrel Saturday and bought a Heavens Door SB at $80. It was the best (I guess) of what was left. HDSB picked by Ohio’s finest is just ok. Every other cask strength bottle on my bar is better.

Oh man. Someone left a miniature of that Twisted Tea stuff here and I, being curious to a fault, decided to try it. OMG. That was hard to choke down, and I'm not saying that in a spirits geek way but just in a human with a functioning sense of taste way. It was like the worst vodka I've ever had with the worst tea I've ever had and the worst sugary sweetener I've ever had all in one pre-batched little cocktail of horrors. I genuinely struggled to get through 20ml and dumped the rest. Who is this for?
