the bonus for being attacked in a settlement is that the garrison stationed there will back up your army.... Also, you no longer have to keep whole armies in reserve to defend a settlement that keeps getting targetted, just build up the barracks/Wall building wich adds quite a few garrison units, and also, you can add a reikskeep (or something around that name i dont know it exactly) wich will also add 2 units of those mounded reiksguard.... all in all, with the correct building setup you barely have to defend.

Try upgrading your defenses to level 2 and badabing badaboom you have shitty cramped town battles galore. At least that's what I read as I hate town battles and haven't tried it.

Many people also complained about the fact that most of the campaign battles were settlement battles. AI was really bad at attacking and defending them so most of the time you could easily win. You see, the addition of monsters, flying units, magic and the removal of phalanx and shield was would make sentlement battles a giant mess for any defeding army.

the only thing i remember from the total war branch is: end game is broken (plop fight with intense eye staring contest until 5 minuts later, one of the 2000 soldiers get enough and starts fighting with 3 possible endings, die, kill or head back into the stare contest).

After playing close to 80 hours theres something your review is missing, Mack. The long term Campaign AI information. Which is gamebreaking in my opinion. Upon getting strong. Strength rating 1-2. The Ai will completly just stop. Frequently till the point of wishing for merciful death to kick in it will spam you peace. It will not attack unless you're weak and running around with crap armies. This means the challenge is in the early game only. Once you get strong which I have on 3 different campaigns now, the game becomes total face roll. Its so mind numbingly boring. Mods dont help. CA are ignoring the problem. Just the same old shit as always. This aside there are various other factors I wish more if any reviewers had mentioned. I just dont understand it. Animations on a massive scale are gone. Reload and cannon anims. Siege battles are dumbed down so hard that upon destroying the enemy walls, the mesh just vanishes. IT doesn't crumble. It just vanishes as if you pressed Delete. No debrie leftover either. Its lazy and sloppy as hell. Declaring war on factions that aren't orcs or vampires will result in an insane peace spam and lack of attack. If you're lucky you get attacked once or twice. But then its back to the peace spam. Its so bad that even ORCS... spams me for peace and wants to become my vassal. ORCS... Like what the fuck? Same with vampires and I swear if Chaos could use diplomacy they would do it too. Its the worst Campaign AI I've ever seen. Worse than Rome 2's because at least Rome 2 would attack you with shit forces frequently. This AI does NOTHING. I've never been so bored playing a total war game. Bored to the extent of getting cancer. Not to mention just soaking in all the downgraded features that so many seem to forgive. Rome 2 was broken and thus bad. But this game is seemingly functional yet so lazily made by a dev that doesn't give a fuck about its customers, only its metacritic ratings and salesnumbers. Warhammer is by my opinion after being a total war fan for over a decade, the worst total war game I've played in my life. And considering how many forgive this crap and lazy low effort design, this game might very well set the standard for future total wars.

just some advice, at 8:50, when your micromanaging the position of your cavalry, there is a new way to do that (since attila) try holding down shift and dragging with your right mouse button, you can set a path for the unit to take, takes a little to get used to, but makes Micro managing far easier.

Hey Mack, they added the coop campaign with Shogun 2 (in Napoleon there was only a 2 player campaign mode against each other). They removed the settlement battles only for settlements without walls. capital cities and settlements with build in walls (need to build it first) are still siege battles. (but it still kinda sucks :/ ). I've seen, that your unit count in your batallions are the standard size. you know, that you can increase the number of soldiers in a unit in the options (i think gameplay options) they double in size i think. so you get even more epic battles ;) have fun!

Also Mack, i don't know if you noticed, but you can take direct control of artillery units =P (You can too in Shogun 2: Fall of the Samurai) Select an Artillery Unit, and on the bottom left of the screen the "track unit" option is replaced by "manual control"

Some people say that 40k cannot really be implemented into the Total War system but I think it would be a cool combination. If they could do it with the fantasy Warhammer really well I am sure it can be done with 40k. I love both the fantasy Warhammer and the 40k one but if I had to pick I would choose the latter one simply because I just love how much coolness factor the 40k universe has to offer. This game is definitely a step up in the Total War series since we could only see mods so far that tried to do a fantasy Total War game. I am glad that they had the guts to come out with this instead of rehashing an era in history that they already covered so far.

I bought the game on the strength of this Review and I'm glad I did. 60 hrs plus into it and I've hardly scratched the surface! I'm learning by watching videos and, best of all, watching the Replays (such a cool feature!) It's so immersive - every battle is different and the Maps are beautifully made - forests, plains, icy wastes, vast caves - and all the Races are amazing to look at. Ok it wasn't cheap but this is gonna keep me occupied and having fun for a long while. Basically, what I'm saying is, it's canny man!!!!

Totally agree with everything except for the complaint about not fighting in settlements that have no walls, in previous total war games it was just a big faf! Now it's rolling with the idea that the garrison sallies forth to meet the attacking army, which is possibly more realistic anyway I feel

Really enjoyed the review. I'm struggling a little to click with this game, but I've owned all the total war games so I'm still adjusting. I gather that the devs dropped and added TW features in line with the tabletop games, so being able to create an army formation and manoeuvre it across the battlefield has been dropped. That's hurting just now, but I love the fact that they really committed to the source material. It'll get better and better too. I can see this being a two year game cycle full of additional units and expansions, and then modded into a game that spans a decade! Edit: found the army group function. It's on the numbered group tab. duh!

Yer the lack of any seige type battle when you fight in a settlement is ridiculous you used to have a chance at defending a settlement against a large army with just some well placed spearmen/pikemen, now you have no chance.

I am a Historical person myself. My favorite Total war was Empire Total war. I have never Played or even known much about war Hammer. Also i usually hate fantasy settings. But this game is the best Total war game i have every played. I love the Empires Steam tanks :D

I absolutely love that you pointed out the siege thing, mack. Thank you a bunch for that because like 90 % of reviewers forget to mention how boneheaded that design choice was. And the example where you are outnumbered but like in former total wars you could force the enemy into a choke point and pit skill vs numbers was great. Before I began playing with mods this element was dangerously close to ruining my play experience due to how repetative some battles felt as well as having no chance defending certain cities. Great game but in my opinion this game's weakness is its siege battles. They are the most dumbed down thing to date and thats just sad considering the actual city backgrounds we can see behind the invisible walls look so amazingly awesome and you just wanna go there :) But nope. So boneheaded. All because they cannot get the AI to function though Rome 1's and Medieval 2's did its job quite well. My endless ponder is why they just haven't copy pasted that AI intellect into this, as well as Rome 2 or Attilas. But yeah.

EIther that of blind fanboyism. Its getting to be a real problem, this standard that total war is getting and that people are allowing. I have compared my gameplay experience to MTW2 the entire time and I defeated the legendary campaign is Chaos in 9-10 hours yesterday. 6-7 of those hours I did nothing but built and steamroll through garrison peasants. The AI didn't attack me at all before turn 90 or 100. I destroyed the ENTIRE north in a blink of an eye. The hilarious thing is it was the tribes I awoke that did the 40 % of the damage, wiping out the dwarves and helped with Bretonnia. All because its scripted to actually attack and not afk because the financial system in this game is so unoptimized in my opinion. Everything is SO expensive and upkeep is crazy so the AI will never make large, expensive armies ever, nor defend its captitals. Its all garrisons of which are face-rolled. I even auto resolved like 30 matches ending up losing 50-100 men against 800-900. Warhammer is good and fun, but its campaign map AI is bone-headed and that combined with the passiveness from Rome 2 and Attila and yeah. Its not challenging before turn 100-150. The surprise from Tzeench was awesome :) But that generically spawning Demon army was the toughest challenge I had had the ENTIRE game. I won the campaign in about 160-170. Mostly because the Scripted demon assassin army slowed me down lol. So OP but great. Like a teleporting mongolian army :) But yeah. The game is waaaaaay too easy in my opinion. On Very Hard I went 100 turns as Empire and never got attacked ONCE by anything but the scripted rival. However Vampires, orcs, nobody wanted to wage war, only asked for peace every single turn. The Vampires even wanted to give me 3000 gold and become my vassal... "Face palm" What else can I say...

I started playing this at the first 10 minutes of the launch, didn't experience any crashes, overheatings or problems launching the game at all. The launch was flawless in my case the only thing that was slightly annoying were the prolonged loading screen at the start of the game. Besides that - strongest launch of Total War series in a looooooooong time.

I would argue that Attila has the deepest campaign mechanics since TWW doesnt have taxes (just ON/OFF), no sanitation/diseases, no negative effects of buildings, no governors, no political system, no family tree, no naval battles, no corruption, no religions, no war exhaustion, no army integrity, no food, no fertility, simplified public order, simplified buildings/construction etc.. But yeah u got ur lords now and their skill tree and quest battles.

Definitely not the deepest. Remember when in medieval 2 or Rome you could build more than six buildings and tactics were a thing? Now it's just smashing everywhere tactics less relevant and troops less responsive. Perhaps that's more realistic but overall less fun for the player

I'm no Warhammer fan either, far from it. And I've only ever played Rome 2, and only for about 4 hours. I got it gifted to me, and I've been blown away. It's pretty cool, looks great, and is pretty challenging. It's not perfect (no game is), but it's a lot of fun. It does have a reasonable learning curve for noobs like me, but it's not so bad once you take your time with it, and it's worth it imo.

Wow man i would nominate this review for the most positive review of urs eva eva eva I mean i wanted it to be a thump up becuase im really dying for a good rts game on the ground. I looked at this game over the internet and I thought it didnt have much content and you kinda just start with an already made army, mind me i havent played any Total War game before. So I thought you would slam it! And mac i always wanna say this I quitted gaming in 2008 and for the last two years been watching your reviews and i want to get back at gaming. And I see how dumbed down games are nowadays, see through, tagging..etc But whenever you thump up a game i know it's worth playing when i get me a pc. Thank you very much for what you do.
