I think it's the reason he doesn't get reviewer copies. Very easy to go the Gamergate route of people already bought out or sympathetic/biased to your brand than someone who is really out to critique things realistically. I will admit i have differing tastes and some of his calls haven't been on point to what i like but the honesty and consistency is poison to people who want to make shit games and cover them in fake/sellout reviews.

Back in 2011-2012, RAGE was one of the few games I desperately wanted to be able to play. Didn't have a good enough gaming PC at the time. Just played RAGE in December. Hands down one of my favorite gaming experiences in the last several years. It was short compared to most games I've played. I didn't like a lot of the jump-scares from mutants and fight scenes, so I'd rather they have done less "SURPRISE! HERE COMES WAVES OF MUTIES!" and more gearing the player up for the big fight (like using sound fx and music to build up to waves coming at you or a boss). The racing was boring for me after awhile. There just wasn't enough creativity in the races to make me want to do them over and over and over, and they all took place on the world map, so it was the same landscape you see over and over and over. What nailed it for me was the interesting characters. EVERYONE was interesting, even the people just standing around with nothing to do. I forget the name of the security guard at the bar in Wellspring, but I loved how he was always napping when I came through. I liked how Caleb was always hanging out around the buggies at the front of Wellspring. I liked how the guys back by the Postal service were always hanging out shootin' the -ish about the Wasteland, and how that one guy would always go hang out and listen in on the talk before wandering around below the Sheriff's building. I loved how they implemented and kept a lot of mechanics simple. Guns were no rocket science of figuring out attachments and add-ons. Grenades were simple. You had a lot of flexibility into how you fought your way through the pretty linear areas. The wingstick is one of the best weapons ever fashioned for an FPS. It really set one hell of a new standard. Why should the only weapons in an FPS game be guns and grenades? Use a wingstick, use an RC car, etc. I loved the creativity and utility of those weapons and I've since missed them in other FPS games I've played. There were some really big hits and some really big misses with RAGE. It nailed characterization and creative mechanics, the background of the story needed a bit more work but it was top-tier especially for the FPS genre. But it failed in being too short, leaving a lot of opportunity open for more side missions, more landscapes-it just needed a bit more of everything to really reach worthiness of modern FPS games. RAGE though should have been a budget title from release. The near 7-year wait for me to finally play it was worth it. I wouldn't take back the experience at all. I will just say that if they can flesh out more of the world, more of the missions, more locations, more to see, less repetition doing missions forwards and backwards through the same map with slight variations in enemy mix... they'll nail RAGE 2 and that game will be more than worth its full price tag.

Fun fact, the reason Rage's ending makes it feel unfinished is because it literally was by design - what we got was only a third of the game id Software wanted to make but the culprit for this was actually the Xbox 360 thanks to its discs being super limited. The game as is needs 4 discs to play the game and with that being second place to the Nintendo Wii, they had to scale back their plans to accommodate having less discs for the 360 version. One case where consoles truly destroy a game's potential.

Here's a weird flex: I recently streamed Rage on Ultra Hard without using the defibrillator or guns. Except for the Sniper missions, and the huge mutant and the scorcherer ship fight. No Gadget either, except one time I used drones and the turrets in one Mutant Madness level where I can't reach the grenade mutant guy - but only after I had punched out everything else. All normal enemies I couldn't reach I did with wingsticks. Oh, and of course I had to use the little remote cars and EMP grenades to open passages and disable shields when necessary.

the double vision on hit thing infuriated me, there were certain enemies that made the areas they were in hjorrible because it was a fixed animation constantly on-loop, so with high fire-rate enemies it the entire screen would become blurred. Likewise I would agree that ti was one of the first steps into casual audience nonsense. It was a chest-high-wall first person shooter that liked to pretend it was a traditional run n gun. Problem is that the heals were so abundant that the hitpoints got neutered as a result. We went from smart use of barricades in a game like doom/quake/half-life to hide behind the corner and abnuse the inconsistent AI as they reload/stand-there-taking-countless-hits(or on rare occasion know exactly where you are aiming despite looking in another sirection and lurch about in a mechanical way to avoid your pinpoint weapons), because if you went into the open 1-2 seconds later you would be dead without fail because you are playing gear of war in first person not a classic FPS. Still, what it did well, it did damned well, the gunplay, the engine and the in-game character progression.

I really enjoyed playing it, not perfect but no game is. And there is some interesting weapons and mini-games and lots of races. And look at it, the game is 9 years old and still looks good IMO.

You really need a balance of both in a good game and this was one of them.

The ironic thing is *it was advertised as being open world..* .. Its a game limited by its time; I can remember having to preinstall *2 seperate disks* on my 360 to even play this.

I found the story to be serviceable as a way to allow the gameplay to happen. It was pretty neat, not complex and very lite, but it worth it to shoot shit.

@Commissar Kitchen i myself am a Doom 3 fan because of its story and atmosphere which they threw away to go back to old doom, doom 2 style. was just saying we do know its going to be like doom hehe. Rage 2: doom edition lol.

I bought Rage on release back in the day on PS3 and was stoked for it. Big ID software fan. I was shot down hard when I saw the awful texture pop in. I heard that PC wasn't much better back then. I wrestled with that game so much until finally giving up after tirelessly trying to deal with it. I hope Rage 2 is what Rage 1 was supposed to be.

Hey Mack, you mentioned sometime ago that you where looking to switch editors to Sony Vegas, would you also be interested in checking out davinci resolve, its free and very powerful and contains everything, that you require including separate tabs for editing, cutting, fusion(special effects) and fairlight(audio). Just a suggestion :)

it was for me maybe 7/10. I agree i think for 8 pounds its worth a buy. I dont think that dated graphics is a con in this game because its pretty old, imo they are pretty decent, i mean its not like after seeing the visuals i would projectile vomit but its good enough as in 2019.
