The Rest Of The Story

4 жыл бұрын

Welcome back we've been waiting. It goes without saying that 2019 was a bit more challenging than usual. Now that's in the past and we are focused on going forward. Brittany and I have a new addition to our little family and we're constantly working to improve our efficiency on the farm. Our intern is tired of hearing me say it but the focus is to diversify and create multiple sources of income, makes more sense than putting all your eggs in one basket. So if you enjoy updates on the daily operations of a farm that's raising; cows, crops and kids stay tuned. I don't put a lot of time into editing my videos I try to keep them as raw and real as they are when they are filmed. I do tend to sit and explain what's going on and the reasons why we do what we do the way that we do it. Plus the occasional voice over video while the work is actively going on. So make sure to Subscribe, Like, and Comment if you want to stay up to date on our 2020 farm year.

Front linkage mower will be awesome on waterways :) Visibility on the mower is great, your able to cut very close to other crops and turning is a lot quicker because the mower is close to the front axle.

For your operation I would agree completely with you as to a self propelled cutter, the pull behind does the job at a lesser cost and it is limited as to what you can do with it. It always comes down to what gives you the most bang for the buck and does it fit in your long range plans for the future.

Couple things that come to mind on your video. I can't believe that you'd even considered sharpening your old blades. I guess I had that thought when I bought my disc mower until they told me the blade was only 7 dollars. Then I was like heck order me up some I'm not going to screw around sharpening this. Second you talk about using an open station tractor like it's some kind of punishment and that people should have a cab tractor. I love the heck out of my open stations. You say that having more tractors would allow you to all focus on doing one task together. But you don't have enough machinery to do that.

I have been running Self-Propelleds my whole farming career. You are right they get stuck easily. They are more stable on hillsides than a tractor however. The sad fact is they are too expensive to buy anymore. The one I have now is a 2006 NewHolland with a sickle bar 14’ header. Nice machine probably the last one that I will own. You can buy a nice tractor and a pull type machine for less money than a selfpropelled.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions. Never knew there was a self propelled cutter or not issue. 😂 Your currently doing what fits your situation, if you were OLF than it might make sense to have one. Definitely agree with you, there really aren’t many badges to be had for wearing your self down on a open station machine. Stay safe, wishing you and your family the best.

Solid reasoning on not wanting a self-propelled discbine. But you would be surprised by how much they will "float through" and handle the angles. But I agree you need another chore tractor. Just something to split up the hours of hay work on.

I completely agree with you, I replied on one of your instagram post about the mower and I agree that your farms make more sense to run a pull behind. The guy I help it makes more sense to run a self propelled becouse he has mostly flat ground and it also keeps him from always looking back to the mower to make sure that it is running right. They also use one cab less 4010 with a loader and one 4010 with a cab to stack and move there big square bales. They would like to get a bigger tractor with a loader but other equipment needs to be upgraded before a new tractor comes into play becouse they already have 1 tillage tractor and 2 front wheel assist and 3 4010’s that still work. Besides there new holland self propelled mower non of there tractors or combine is younger than 2002

Personally if I were you I would run the 8235r on the baler. Gives you another tractor to use without another payment. A lot of people run 200 plus hp on round balers in my area. The may cost a little more to run but they sure are comfortable. Also have less issues with them when they are ran year around. By the way I mean no disrespect by all means you guys know you're operating better then anyone.

When your operation is relatively small but growing, machine versatility is critical. It's a matter of getting a return on the money sunk into equipment, if nothing else. If you were running as much hay ground as Wes or Tyson, your calculations and reasoning would be different, of course. Each one of you has to make decisions based on what works in your unique situation. Now, if we're talking tractors, we know Brittany has laid claim to the "76". Which one do you suppose Hannah would prefer if things go where they may be headed?

I only made it to 12 minutes as I had to head to work, so I'll finish when I get back. But just to say I agree, a self propelled mower makes no sense for you guys both in field size and also the one trick motor as you covered. My honest feeling is if there was to be any more upgrade, it would be to a butterfly mower before you would ever look at going self propelled. However, that would only be viable in the more open fields like the valley I imagine. So the moco would still be the choice for hitting waterways and perhaps pasture.
@JDfan1990
@JDfan1990 4 жыл бұрын
I would be the same Travis. A self propelled would be a nice to have but not a necessity compared having another tractor that can do more than one job. Cracking rims just an age/wear issue? I just brought a JD 435 and noticed 1 rim is cracking on it too but for $1200 I can’t complain too much lol

What about a three point front and rear mower like the new holland one that Ryan got to demo would you consider a mower like that
@MatthewHoag77
@MatthewHoag77 4 жыл бұрын
If I recall correctly, Ryan thought the triple mower was a bit too much machine for their contours and smaller spaces like waterways. Things could always change, though. I can go back to his old videos and find one where he gave the opinion that a vertical tillage tool didn't make much sense for them, and then, of course, they went ahead with the Earthmaster 3000 deal, and we know how they feel about that now. The lesson seems to be: always leave room to learn and change your mind as new information becomes available.

I have fond memories of riding along with my uncle in his 4-post IH 886 cutting hay. In hindsight, it wasn't the safest thing for a kid to do (sitting on the fender holding on to one of the posts), but it sure was fun. It's hard to beat the smell of freshly-cut hay, and this was in north-central Wisconsin, so the heat and dust weren't nearly as bad.

I tried sharpening the blades on my hay mower (Zweegers drum mower) and found they just don't last that long anyway afterwards. The blades on mine are flat (no "twist" or lift to them so they're bi-directional, so you "flip" them by moving them to the opposite drum spinning the opposite direction, which is quick and easy with the spring loaded blade pin connectors rather than the bolt-on connectors!) I've found that they wear pretty good on the first side, but when the front corner wears off the start losing cutting ability-- by the time the front corner has worn about 1/3 of the way back across the width of the blade, they're not cutting worth a darn, so I swap them side-for-side and then they seem to last FOREVER cutting in the reverse direction-- not sure if it's some kind of flow dynamics of the airflow or something due to the now-back corner being worn off or what, but they cut a LOT longer on the back side after the "front" side is worn out. I've tried resharpening them on the bench grinder and yeah while you'll get them 'razor sharp' the edge doesn't seem to last very long at all and they're wore down worse and cutting worse than before... not sure if the edge is "case hardened" by heating the edge red hot and quenching them when they're made at the factory or what... which might well be the case-- hardened steel cutting edge will last longer, but then unhardened, softer steel behind it in the "body" of the blade to resist damage from rocks or stuff, whereas a COMPLETELY hardened blade would tend to SHATTER like glass when it hit a rock or something... Anyway, I found it to just not be worth the extra effort to sharpen the blades-- I buy them by the box from the dealer and always keep a full box on hand and so when they've gotten worn out, swapped sides, worn out again, they just get pulled and thrown in the scrap and replaced with new ones... just time better spent than goofing around sharpening cheap blades that won't hold up more than maybe 1/3-1/2 the time the original wear life you got out of them at most, and having to switch them out ANYWAYS... new ones, one and done, get back to work LOL:) Later! OL J R :)
