Let's say the truth, it s not a matter of where you were born. Interracial or not, a couple has to be empathic. I got (my experience)more difficulties with people with my same language than people from other countries. Maybe cause I live abroad for over 20 years so I don't put any wall... My wife is Korean I met her when I was stationed there. She spoke good English then and has improved a great deal. We've been married 27 years and have 1 daughter. The culture shock for her coming to the US was tough. It was eased a bit because I was stationed in Japan after Korea, and we lived in military housing. Because of that she had a chance to get a small taste of American culture. I'm very proud of my wife when she first arrived in the US, she had no friends or family and a 3-month-old child. I had just retired from the Air Force and was working 3rd shift at my new job. She was alone every night and when I returned home, I had to sleep. She basically raised our child by herself, kept the house up, and put up with me. The hardest part was teaching her to drive, she didn't drive in Korea, so we were starting from scratch. The language barrier really showed here, for example when pulling on to a street I'd might say, floor it, gun it or words to that effect, she had no idea what I was talking about. Things like right of way, yield, bear to the right / left she had no clue. Needless to say, I was terrified to ride with her. Once we got through all that she became a good driver. We have developed our own language over the years with the very little Korean I know and the way she pronounces some English words.

@@briangulley6027 She's not wrong and I too fringe when seeing those Southeast Asian mail-order brides bought into a family of under-income rural farmers that are about the age of today's Silent Generation if I was to exaggerate a bit. I'm talking about the Korean women between their twenties and forties. Those spoiled brats don't have any sense of 'with rights comes responsibility'. Generally speaking, the majority of them vie for the authority of men, advantage of being a woman, and the accountability of a child. There's a reason why the birth rates are dropping like none other. As a side note, I also blame the '딸바보(Daughter-favoring) Dads' from the 386 Generation (in their 50s to 60s today) who brought up their daughters like princesses and those simping boyfriends that loses their minds when being called oppa. (The dating and marrying culture is just twisted thanks to these sympathizers of radical feminism.) As someone who served in the military just like you, I've seen plenty of my colleagues and friends telling me that they're going to frag the female officers if they lead them battle during wartime. Not nice for us to say, but there's always a reason why which I won't even bother explaining. Have a nice day sir and thank you for your service in Korea.

It’s perfectly normal to want to be with someone from the same culture and who looks like you. Most mixed relationships don’t last. It’s fascinating watching Korean shows where many of the plots are related to class issues and people falling in love from different backgrounds.

Actually, I think is easier for women to adopt to their spouses culture. Maybe because in most countries, culturally speaking, people teach girls to keep the house working. The center of a “strong” household is a women who knows how to endure hardships. So, women are more welling to adapt (of course not all) and concede than men.

Yes, it is changing but the hard reality is that in most Asian countries and African countries this is the case, as well as many countries in South America, hell this still happens even in USA. So, yeah a lot more women wants change but this is not what my original comment was about. Im a northern Portuguese and we are quite rowdy here... we say a lot of badwords (which almost are not seen as badwords do to their often use) and yea, japanese might be too strict for my confort.

I agree. I spent a number of years living in Japan, and I found it difficult to understand the true feelings of most Japanese. They are very polite, but hesitate to clearly express how they honestly feel when conversing even in their own language.

My wife is also Korean. I also met her during my military tour in country. We were advised that our marriage wouldn't last. I being black and she being Korean. One blessed thing was that I was welcome by most of her family, and the same for her by my family members. We just celebrated our 46th anniversary. Like most marriages we had our up and down moments. During those periods the love and respect for each other never went away. We have hit our 46th year with a lot to reflect back on. More positive than negative. Three kids whom we are very proud of, they are now young adults. Looking forward for many more anniversaries.

Glad you asked about "Live in Korea or his country", personally I never saw this question in street interview and it's an important one. I am actually in this situation, though we are in her country at the moment (China) and that before meeting her my plan was actually to live in Korea, it was honestly a big relief to learn that she was ok to move either in Korea or Switzerland later. honestly cultural differences is something you can grow to learn and appreciate, it doesn’t have to be complicated. i think the most important part is knowing whether you’d be okay with being far away from family because that’s hard, it’s especially hard when you have family in several places and you just want to be close to them, especially when you have kids it feels safe to be near your parents and your siblings. i think that’s the most important part to consider.

It doesn't have to be complicated but it generates lots a misunderstandings that lead to conflicts time to time. I was well aware of Korean culture when I met my wife 13 years ago and despite that we've had our share of fights for silly cultural differences that we didn't realise at that time (especially when we got our son). It's only after talking about each fight that we realise that we read the situation differently due to cultural differences. However, you're right. It doesn't have to be complicated but it will generates conflicts time to time. It will remain simple if you know how to learn from these fights and improve.

As someone who is dating a Korean l can state that communication is the biggest key. My korean is very limited and he knows some english but we still get by. Having a portable translator helps a lot too. Since we're near retirement age our major future decision comes down to which country to live in together. Wherever it is, I'm sure it'll be interesting.

It's possible! If you really love each other focus on that and never let go! You can make it work no matter what situations you might face! My wife's family who is korean was against her and I getting married because to them social status means a lot! However, I broke that by showing them how ridiculous it is and how stereotypes shouldn't be used as judgments for people of the same race.

My wife is from the Philippines and has spent over 20 years living in the UK. The first place she was working was Belfast in Northern Ireland, where I'm originally from. We met some years later in London and the one main thing I noticed was that she could understand my accent. When I would go to the Philippines however that became a problem. It got to the point where I'd be speaking Taglish where I could. I suspect that the same thing is going to happen for Koreans who are with English speakers but whose accent is not an accent they've heard. You even see it with K-pop idols like Felix from Stray Kids when he speaks English with an Aussie accent. And that's not even half as bad as my accent. Now imagine if you as a Korean can only speak a few words of English but they are in a "standard" American accent.

I think that nationality doesn't matter at all, but that's maybe because I come from a multicultural country (Mexico). From my perspective, language would be the most difficult part in an international relationship but is not that difficult to overcome it. For example, I'm learning korean and have been talking to a good korean friend who is learning spanish; we sometimes speak in korean, sometimes in spanish but mostly in english so the boundaries are just imaginary.

As a white man who lived in both South Korea and Japan I can say the overwhelming majority of Koreans and Japanese, even the young ones value homogeneity over diversity and wouldn't marry a white or black person. Both South Korea and Japan are two of the most homogeneous countries in the world despite the fact that both have declining populations.

Please can you think about giving your daughters, more confidence, encourage opportunities to be global. To not live in a bubble & not explore further. I just arrived to Spain (my home country) from South Korea and honestly I had a blast there. I want everyone to know that ultimately you have to experience the country first hand and not base your perceptions of the country on others opinion. We are all different and that will lead to different experiences inevitably. I highly encourage you to go to South Korea. Also I will like to advice that you inform yourself about their culture and manners in order to inmerse yourself into South Korean's culture. Please don't go there trying to force your own culture into them, if you read about South Korea's history you can easily tell they already had enough foreign interference. Respect and honor their culture and they will honor you back. Also helps if you speak a little bit of Korean, even if it's just very basic stuff like "Hi", "Thank you" end so on. South Koreans will appreciate it a lot and once they get to know you they are the warmest and most welcoming people that I have known so far. South Korea is a great and very comfortable country (of course it is not perfect, but I want to wholeheartedly say that my experience has been overwhelmingly positive) and I encourage everyone to experience it. Also, I feel very happy that my country, Spain, gets a lot of appreciation in South Korea! Shotout to these ladies! Explore and have fun everyone!

Surprisingly different answers that I expected. I was married to a phenomenal Korean lady for many years before she passed away. We lived in the U.S. Yes, we had a few cultural adjustments that seemed to be so small, and yet were we seemed to make them big. She was very smart and graduated second in her high school and went to university in Korea for mathematics. However, her limitations in English was limiting in her job opportunities. However, I NEVER heard her EVER voice any complaints about work limitations. We were fortunate that there were a number of other Korean families associated with the university where we lived and they were a VERY important cultural part of our lives. However she was also an extremely extroverted person and always actively involved with others and known as the "Welcome Wagon" in our community. She regularly made visits back to Korea and her siblings came here too. I became aware of some of the biases that exist in Korean culture, but all cultures have those and are to be realistically and honestly dealt with. Financially she became much better off living in the U.S. than she would have been in Korea. In summary, our multi-cultural marriage and extended families were an amazing part of our lives together. I treasure our time together and it is hard for me to imagine being married to anyone other than another Korean lady. My biggest mistake was not becoming fluent in speaking Korean when I had the opportunity. Nowadays I love me some Kpop 😆🤣😆 the most beautiful women in the world.

Go live alone in that country, experience dating, and get married. The cultural shock is bigger than expected, and coping with the differences in lifestyle is challenging. If you only date and marry without experiencing living alone in that country, you might easily fall into depression abroad.

Great job,Jin I was married to Chinese and we had four beautiful children, my father in-law didn’t speak English but we managed to get along but my mother in law could speak some English but refused,my eldest sister in law was great she always translated and interacted with me and the children it was beautiful 😻 and I miss our relationship but communication is the key, my husband refused to teach me the language but the cultural issues were easy. For those who'd like to marry crossculturally, I think first it is important to choose someone who doesn't look down on you or consider themselves superior. I've met those douchebags who say "well in the US we don't...or this is how we do things here" It's one thing to say this as an explanation to amend conflicts but it's another when it's said to make you feel like you are the only one who always has to change or your ways are strange and inferior or worse, utterly wrong. I think someone who loves you will try to understand you and also adjust to you and never use cultural differences to judge or put you down. However, this can be a tall order because cultural differences can be offensive or shocking and most do feel a sort of crisis when things are too different. It's hard to constantly adjust both ways. I think most intercultural marriages that work well are those where one person is actually more intetested in the other person's culture and has more affinity to it than his or her first culture. If both are too strong about their respective cultures, it can really lead to many conflicts or difficulties. Finally, my recommendation for those who want to seriously marry cross culturally is to spend some time in that country more than just a few days or weeks. If you can live there for 6 months or 1 year and still feel you can marry someone from that culture, then that's a good sign. I say that because sometimes people like European or US or Asian or other countries but more for aesthetics. There are often many cultural aspects that they don't expect. One example is individualistic vs community oriented cultures. For me, I used to want to live in the US, Western Europe, etc. until I got acquainted with individualism that I felt did not fulfill me as much as my community-oriented culture. Bec of this, though I know how pretty these places are, I no longer imagine living there. Maybe only visit as a tourist but not live permanently.

I know it was "traditional" for the parents to say different. However, it's Not their choice. This is 2022. You respect all parents, true. However, she's "grown" and can make her "own decisions"! I call that tradition- controlling. They should want their daughter to be happy! As long as you "lay a foundation" if you decide to marry that girl. Talk over about everything. My wife is from China. It works for us because I speak Chinese fluently. And I am more than willing to adapt to her culture. At first her parents were unsure about me but now 23 years later and having three children and we’re still together. They are convinced that we are a good couple. Mutual respect is the key to any relationship whether it’s by racial or not

@@gillmsnfillman1691 That’s simply untrue. Most interracial pairings within the Asian communities are going to have the woman be the Asian one. This is by design. No one is mate guarded harder than Asian men, especially in western countries. And yes I am aware of the popularity of Korean men nowadays with “other” women. However you have to understand that this is a rather recent thing and before all this K-pop and K-Drama craze, it was only Korean women that were sought after by foreigners. Korean men might be having a moment right now but before that women of all colors were conditioned to stay away them at least in a romantic sense.

What is that? Memorial to the ancestors? Other countries have it, too! Just last weekend (Saturday), we had one of many in Bulgaria. I'm an Orthodox Christian like most people in Russia and Greece. I cooked food to give in memory of our beloved dead, and we went to visit the cemetery. We visited my husband's parents graves, but I couldn't go to my mom's because she is buried in another town. We did some rituals at home for her soul. I mean, if one has respect to the partner, offering comfort like that will be normal.
