Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis is in desperate need of a remaster. It is LucasArts best game, no doubt. However, in recent years it barely gets mentioned by the company. Monkey Island is returning, and everything else had a sweet remaster to bring them back to life. But not Indiana Jones.
A new game is in the works with Bethesda, but what fans really want is more of Indy's point and click adventures! Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis Special Edition is a fan made project that encompasses the first 90 minutes of the game - up until you select which path to take - wits, team, or fists.

Sad that we will never see a film adaptation of this game. So many people have been deprived of experiencing it's story. Fortunately, I grew up with this game and have played it multiple times. It always takes me back. SO good.

Back in the days I love this game for its adventure, scenario, graphics were cool back then, but as much as I love the original game I'd love a remaster of this point n' Click Master piece. Since we got grim fandango, full throttle and two firsts Monkey Island games. I'd love to have a special edition of the two indy games that was released under Lucasfilm games and Lucas arts games.

I guess what I’m hesitant about with this is the fact that it didn’t have a super-stylish cartoon aesthetic like the MI series or Day of the Tentacle, which I think is what made those remasters so great. I balled my eyes out when I found out Production was cease & deceased. It made me so happy playing the demo I smiled and felt warm and tingly inside. When the cut scene between the scientist and the guy that got the bead with the robot happened I laughed because it's funny to see this in 3d point and click graphics. I think I’ll play it without the voice track .. if it allows that? Also, I suspect an “unofficial” talkie version using the original voice tracks might circulate at some point in the future .. kind of like the Monkey Island talkie editions, but in reverse .. new graphics, old audio. They’d have to clean up the audio though .. I recall the audio tracks were quite fuzzy and crackling a bit .. probably recorded in low quality 22kHz. I also notice the iMuse cues don’t trigger .. so the music won’t “follow the action” like in the original.

As someone who grew up with the original MIs and Indiana FOA, I generally find the special editions distracting primarily because of the high framerate/floaty character movement. With the original MIs, the chunky framerate and animations sort of complimented the chunky graphics. Thimbleweed park had a similar issue for me. Weirdly I don't have an issue with how Return to Monkey Island looks because it feels the animation is complementing the pop-up book style. Anyway, I'm very happy for people to get into these stories one way or another. For me I never really get the impact I'm looking for when going back to old classics so I'd prefer a new Indiana Story game maybe to tie in with movie 5!

FoA is an amazing game, but personally I'm pretty happy with the old art style. This proposed remaster is technically impressive and clearly a lot of work has gone into it, but I don't think it surpasses the original, especially not the sound design and voice-work. Obviously, topping a masterpiece like this was never going to be an easy project. Why not instead make a pseudo-sequel to FoA or an original Indy (or Indy-like adventure) instead? That way it can avoid being unfairly compared with the amazing original game.

Planned sequels After the release of the game, a story for a supposed successor in the adventure genre was conceived by Joe Pinney, Hal Barwood, Bill Stoneham, and Aric Wilmunder. Titled Indiana Jones and the Iron Phoenix, it was set after World War II and featured Nazis seeking refuge in Bolivia, trying to resurrect Adolf Hitler with the philosopher's stone. The game was in development for 15 months before it was showcased at the European Computer Trade Show. However, when the German coordinators discovered how extensively the game dealt with Neo-Nazism, they informed LucasArts about the difficulty of marketing the game in their country. As Germany was an important overseas market for adventure games, LucasArts feared that the lower revenues would not recoup development costs, and subsequently canceled the game. The plot was later adapted into a four-part Dark Horse Comics series by Lee Marrs, published monthly from December 1994 to March 1995. In an interview, Barwood commented that the development team should have thought about the story more thoroughly beforehand, calling it insensitive and not regretting the cancellation of the title. Another follow-up game called Indiana Jones and the Spear of Destiny was planned, which revolved around the Spear of Longinus. Development was outsourced to a small studio, but eventually stopped as LucasArts did not have experience with the supervision of external teams. Elaine Lee loosely reworked the story into another four-part comic book series, released from April to July 1995.

To be honest, I don't think I would play it. I feel like those old 256 VGA graphics lend their own aesthetic, being their own art form. I'm tired of video game remakes. I wish more people would see old games and their graphics as its own art form.

Best one I don't know but the first I played and finished in English when I was a kid despite the fact that I'm French, I figured out how to finish it in a language that I could nor talk or understand at my young age. My favorite goes to monkey Island 2 but yeah Fate of Atlantis was great with its 3 paths with differents puzzles, that was unique in a point n' Click.

while it looks good i would rather play the original because something feels off about the graphics. also a real remake might be more interesting with updated gameplay. not sure how this would look like but i would not go the way of a rendered remaster. only my personal opinion.

I have to admit that Indy Jones and the FoA is one of the biggest gaps in my adventure gaming completions... made more embarrassing by the fact that I'm an Indy fan too! I only ever read the comic adaptation. If this remake was ever made to completion I would 100% play it. Update: I just read your top comment 💀

The devs wanted to get permission to make a licences remake but I doubt that would ever some. Although Disney for sure should have got someone to remaster it - especially in the run up to Indy 5!

​@@messire9837 Bethesda doesn't own the rights to Indiana Jones. They have the license to make a game, but those are not the same thing. I agree that Bethesda's game is the reason there won't be any sort of Fate of Atlantis remake or sequel, but I'm unsure what Ron Gilbert has to do with it. He was not involved in the original game. Feel free to tell me what the best Lucasarts games are, you're entitled to your opinion and I'm looking forward to hearing them.

I've been waiting for a remaster of this game for decades .. having said that, this doesn't work for me, first screen, the blue one, is very moody .. but in here, it's just like a generic room. Same with some of the other rooms. 3d sprites look weird with this art too. The only good thing that is really an enhancement, is the interface.

I wouldn´t, because it still has this uncanny early 2000 CGI look on it, that optically ruined many great adventures (and didn´t age very well). While i appreciate, that they colorwise are really close to the original look, they didn´t fully suceed with that transition it 3D. Some games just need a more comic or painted look, so maybe they should try a more stylized approach.Or just let it be 2D and simply use highres sprites and backgrounds.

The voice acting is on par with the original. The one for Klaus Kerner is about the same; the one for Marcus is much improved. As for Indy's voice, it's different, but neither worse nor better than the old one, IMO.

The graphics style reminds me more of Tex Murphy (Martian Memorandum) or Gabriel Knight (Sins of the Fathers) or Return to Zork than classic LucasArts.

Really? No, I must admit. Praise for the amount of work which must have went into making this but the result is - with all respect - somehow underwhelming. The character models look underdeveloped and don't really fit themselves into the environments. And most of the rooms / backgrounds are looking quite "off" as well. Most of them are looking strangely "empty", static, cold and too clean and in some cases like the attic, Indy's office or the New York setting they are looking in a strange way too wide and big for the character models they are housing. Somehow the elements don't fit each other. So no, a more graphical / repainted approach should have been a better fit here than this pseudo 3D.

I would if I the graphics was not so uncanny valley style. Sees this a lot on hobby dab project. No art direction. Amateurs that pull together 3d art “Clío art” assets. Like above. The lighting is off characters flat. Animation terrible. Etc.

No, the team that made the demo did it as a proof of concept to try and get the licence from Disney/Lucasfilm but nothing came of it.

No. Yes. No. No, yes, I'd like to say no. I'd obviously play it, but wouldn't expect much but regret. Monkey Island was just a disappointment and the built-in walk through hints an insult. Better make a new game and adhere to the principles from back in the day. Wasn't Thimbleweed Park a good approach? I couldn't get past a certain point cause I beeping hated, hated, HATED the beeping clown. Too bad for me, apart from that, it was a pretty and captivating game. Somebody could just start making point-and-click games again with challenging puzzles and witty writing, the problem is just that with the internet at hand at all times, every puzzle must be solved in minutes before we start cheating, or at least keep us engaged without interruption, so there is little room for intellectual and analytical challenges, much less any demand or even tolerance for first having to figure out what to do. To ponder for an afternoon and then maybe even having to sleep on it, god forbid. So especially with the special-ed hints that get added rather than more details in the scenes, more objects to pick up, some kind of easter eggs or anything other equally pointless, all this remastering leans dangerously towards vandalism. It's not so much different from colourizing movies, I think, or the rewriting of historical literature for political correctness. It is an insult to the artists who had designed the original and it is an insult to the younger generation when they are denied the capacity to appreciate the beauty of a good scumm game. Either remake the game or create something new, but this cosmetic franchise milking is a disgrace.
