It's important to recognize that Subaru is straight up a messianic figure. Full stop. Forgiveness and absolution are Subaru's to dish out, and the way it's his decision alone is meant to be viewed as inhuman, unnatural, and maybe even monstrous. By human standards, Subaru's a monster because he's so far departed from the realm humans are meant to be limited to. His decision-making is meant to be alien, in that sense. If you're looking for what "Tappei is preaching as the 'right thing to do' here", then it would be saying to not be beholden to any framework that would dictate how you would feel about others. Think about how Subaru denies the norms and conventions of the world he finds himself in. Subaru wants to love the world's devil? Love the devil he will, rest of the world be damned. Wants to forgive a demon? Forgive that demon and ask for their help too. Our feelings, our grudges, and how we approach others are one of the few things that exist that we are truly in control of, which is very important in a world of powerlessness. Essentially, it's about choosing happiness over pain. If you wanted to see a character clearly arch-typed as an optimist, it would be Subaru, to a severe degree. Every time Subaru forgives someone who has wronged him, he's choosing, he's making the absolute distinction, that the happiness he gains from them is more important to him than the pain. That's love.

Does this make conditional love any less real? I don’t think so. The main difference between “pure” love and conditional love is, well, the conditions themselves. If those things stay true, that’s love, built on a mutual effort to keep meeting each other halfway, even as new expectations and little compromises come along over time. Yeah, one would see Subaru so much as losing a leg and know that this is probably where his run ends, but too much has happened only for this to be the end. I was also spoiled that this Arc not only isn’t that long but Subaru also doesn’t die that much, so I can only imagine Subaru dying the first few times in the earlier episodes was genuinely all the chances he’d get, since he’s out of the mindset killing himself now. The ending of the episode also leads up to too much by itself; I don’t think Subaru’s gonna die, unfortunately.
