Sailing Yacht Florence

Күн бұрын

We experience the extremes in Sumbawa, Indonesia. From swimming with the WORLDS LARGEST SHARK to competing in the BUFFALO RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Extreme sports are alive and well in Sumbawa, water buffalo racing is all the rage and we turned up to the world championships, believe it or not, they even let us have a go! As an extreme contrast we also took the opportunity to get into the water and swim with the world's largest shark, the whale shark.
We are a British couple who set off from England in 2016 to fulfill our dream of sailing around the world on our 37ft sail boat, Florence. Along the way we share the live aboard lifestyle with the highs and lows of travelling around the world by boat.

As far as the negative comments about the race. As someone who raises cattle, that was probably hardly even noticed by the animal, a fly bite is worst! You can see the ox love their owners and they are probably treated better than a lot of people. Dee and Deb

These guys look after their animals way better than most westeners as they are a major investment for them and so they get treated well. The stick slap looks harsh but the hide is so thick I doubt they feel it and certainly they don't show any signs of reacting.

I hadn't seen the water buffalo racing until now. IDK if you drank any of their milk, but it's 8% butterfat! I was interested that you had the chance to swim with the whale sharks so casually - in Mexico, the government is very protective, and limits how many ppl, how much time, etc. Of course, instead of that swim, I got to tour a Mexican Hospital for a week. Not a fun story.

@SailingYachtFlorence
@SailingYachtFlorence 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you. We get great use out of our folding bikes, they were both second/third hand freebies from family so we did not chose a specific bike. All bikes will suffer in the salt air. We have a brompton and a dahon. The brompton folds up smaller but we both prefer the dahon with its slightly bigger wheels for where we use it.

@digitalcanvas4444
@digitalcanvas4444 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Matt and Amy. First, I love your videos. The content is really well done and you know how to put a story together. I just have a little bit of a problem with your camera settings, and I'd like to help you out with them if you don't mind my offering some advice. If you'll notice, whenever you're shooting something that's fast-moving, like the buffalo, or even as minor as riding on the back of the ATV and the camera is shaking, you get a strobing effect from the video. This should have a slight blur to look right. But the strobing is an unnatural effect and hard (at least for me) to watch. I think the problem is that you're in a sunny location and you've got your camera set to "automatic." The camera first tries to adjust to the sunny situation by stopping down the iris, but it reaches f/22 (its limit) and the only other option is for it to start increasing the shutter speed. This is where the problem lies. Without going into a lot of detail, let me just explain that the solution to this problem is an ND filter. Get a 1.2 or 1.5 version. This will make your shot darker so the camera doesn't have to work so hard to correct for the bright sun. And thanks again for the great videos!!!
@SailingYachtFlorence
@SailingYachtFlorence 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Tyler, Thank you that is a very useful and timely tip. We had come to a similar conclusion ourselves and are looking to buy some filters in Malaysia. It is good to hear that you also think a filter could improve this, we are still just researching and learning about filters. cheers Matt and Amy

Hi Steve and Jenny, Very true. Sadly there is a lot of debris in the water around here. The local people we have spoken to are generally embarrassed about how much rubbish is strewn around (especially the younger generations) and there are programs to clear it up. So hopefully things will improve for life in the ocean, but it is going to take a lot of time and work.

@peterclark4685

According to the video sequence - ladies first? Is this because of a Buffalo union's request? Did you learn the Indonesian word for *'spider boats'?* Interested because I use that phrase in a book I'm writing about how the Commonwealth alone could have destroyed the Nazi regime by the end of '41. They are SWATH based patrol boats that with the help of a mother ship provide almost total security for the convoys. Why nobody of the time thought of this I have no idea. The sea states for the U-boats to see or operate above the surface would have also been manageable for such stable, miniature gun platforms. There's more to it of course. Point being I might be able to use the Indonesian word in the book. The mad inventor is a colonial, Rhodesian, so is not steeped in the class system and open to ideas. Many thanks if you can.

Yes FeltitrRising, so far you are the only one pointing out the obvious. This is a form of Animal Exploitation for the misguided Anthropocentric humans that Call this fun and exhilarating. "competing in the BUFFALO RACING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS. Extreme sports are alive and well in Sumbawa, water buffalo racing is all the rage and we turned up to the world championships, believe it or not, they even let us have a go!" "Believe it or not", you have just Used and Abused animals for entertainment. I have been Following them on the epic Journey around the world and watched them taking great care with Birds and other wildlife that inspired them to state many times how awesome it is to see and experience wildlife in there natural state. I'm sure these two "Animal Lovers" will one day wake up to the Realization that their participation in this Abuse, Is and Was wrong. Can you imagine them agreeing to Fancy coloured Straps, And Ropes on the Whale Sharks and start Riding them around under the water! I say to both of you, to look deep into your hearts and consider how the animals feel to be put though this abusing form of entertainment. Knowing you have Big Hearts I'm sure you will reconsider participating or promoting this kind of animal abuse as you continue your Voyage around the beautiful planet that all animals and Humans call home. I hope you will look at your Group Photo in a different light after considering the event from the Animals Perspective.
