Living in Thailand I would have recommended Rolly Tasker Sails without hesitation, and what a magnanimous gesture by Sven to gift you guys new sails, just shows that when all around the world people are so fixated by money there are still some people that see beyond the quick dollar and spread a little happiness around, well done Sven. I'll be dropping into Rolly next time I'm down in Phuket (probably when I am looking for my new boat next year).

Being a sailor in Perth, Rolly Tasker is a local legend and there is still a rigging company in Fremantle that also carries his name. Naturally, his loft was my preference when I needed new sails and mine were made in the Phuket factory. Therefore, it was great to get a behind the scenes look and you guys did a great job of putting it together without it becoming a commercial and remain your story. My sails are triradials using performance Dacron and I use them for both cruising and racing in WA’s famous sea breeze. So they take a beating and have stood up well over the past three years, so I’m sure you’ll get plenty of nautical miles out of yours.

Adding the staysail to your inventory was a brilliant idea. The 135% genoa must have been a real handful at times, eh? I suspect that in a breeze, dousing the genoa and sailing with the staysail and reefed main will result in better balance overall by moving the foretriangle center of effort aft. Keep up the good work -- I look forward to your impressions on the new rig / sails as you continue your adventure across the Indian Ocean.

Hi Kate, New sails are always very exciting to receive! Are you still sailing Hope? We're hoping to finally put those sails to the test as we have less than a month on the countdown before we set off across the Indian Ocean, nearly 3000 miles non-stop to the Seychelles. Best of luck with your cruising plans. Cheers Matt
@katemitchell31893 жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, Yes, still sailing Hope (although, she's been out of the water for a while now here in Portugal, since we can't really sail anywhere until places begin to open up, so have taken the opportunity to do some improvements on her). We hope to head down to the Canaries again by the end of September, then on to Cape Verde before an Atlantic crossing this coming winter. So we want to have decent sails ready for that crossing! I hope your forthcoming passage across the Indian Ocean goes well. The new sails certainly look good so far! Keep up the great work - really enjoy your videos. All the best, Kate

I'd never heard of Rolly Tasker until one of my sister boats in my "Yacht Club" became a Canadian Distributor about 15 years ago and the name stuck in my head. When we were travelling through Phuket about 9 years ago, I remember passing by their factory on the main road and was impressed by how big they were then. Never did get a chance to stop in and visit and they look MUCH bigger now but I also remember Delos getting some work done there too. Good on them for sponsoring you and I've only ever heard good things about them. Stay safe!

Here is what I learned (and why I love your videos): A stay sail is for when you want to sail upwind. The puffy sail Amy designed is for going with the wind and it's gonna be billowy and pretty. Thank you to the sail manufacturer. I hope your kindness is repaid a thousand-fold.

Wow! What an incredible thing Roly Tasker have done in sponsoring you. Having just bought a new main and genoa (from Crusader!) I know what an investment new sails are so RTs offer is fantastically generous. Not only did that facility look spotless it also apeared that the workforce were happy which is always good to see. Nice also to see that some of the work is still done by hand. Love it! I daresay by the time I get to Thailand I'll be in need of their services too - don't suppose I'll be getting sponsored though lol! Hope you guys are doing ok in your lockdown. Ours in the UK looks set to be in force until at least May although I heard this morning (13 May) that Spain are going to start lifting theirs. Incidentally today was supposed to be the day that I set off. Hey Ho :-/

Hi guy's, I'm so glad that Rolly Tasker Sails sponsored you, as said before, I have a RT set of sails and they have been my primary set of sails, used and abused for cruising and club racing for over 12 years, they are 16 years old now. I hope you get at least as long cruising as I have done. I had another company build me a sail (mistake) more for racing and it lasted 12 hours, stretched beyond economical repair. Fairwinds and safe travels guy's.

That's an amazingly generous company, and to follow the process along was fantastic. Knowing how big a deal this is for you both... this is one of the best videos you've shown us, thank you. I kinda feel sorry that the 'hand made' aspect of the process is steadily being replaced by automation, but that's our future I guess. You'll have to keep sailing until these sails wear out now, and how long will that take haha.

Guys! Loved this video. Heads up to Rolly Tasker and to the two of you and your fine ship. Rob Kemp helped me enormously with my sails. I bought a Westerly Typhoon in 2014 with the intention of sailing off shore. I did immediately fit an inner forestay to fly a heavy weather stay sail and to say it's a success is an understatement. The only time a role the Genoa to reef is when downwind in heavy weather and I want to keep the weight well forward. Otherwise I reef by setting the stay sail and furling the genoa. Rob made heavy blue water sails for me. Reef 3 is a slightly heavier cloth than 1 & 2. I had a windward passage of a 1,000 miles, most of which was under double or triple reefed main and stay sail. It was surprisingly comfortable. You will love the stay sail. Fair winds and stay safe. ATB James

RolyTasker are a fantastic sailloft. I visited there in 2011 for steadying sails for my Selene 38 Trawler yacht. The sails were a great success and actually were very useful,even on a trawler. We have travelled about 25,000+ miles on Night Owl 2 now and the sails proved very useful on many occasions, especially the rolly trip down from Borneo to Singapore with a big quartering sea, maybe 3 metres at times. Really enjoyed this video and of course many of the other videos too. Good luck to you both. David.

I absolutely love your videos. I've always wanted to sail, but the nearest I've got is a Mirror Dinghy on a placid lake with a lot of help. I've watched other sailing videos, but yours are comprehensive and informative. Your breakdown of costs was brilliant. Also, maintenance, stocking up, checking into different countries, timing important events, all requiring detailed forward planning. I only started watching just before Tonga, so now you're laid up for a while, I'm starting at Episode 3. Your energy, interactions with locals, commentaries on the places you visit, personal interactions in a confined space including watches, cooking, repairs on the move etc, all leave your watchers in no doubt as to what's involved, and I would recommend your videos to anyone thinking about such a trip. Looking forward to the continuation of your journey, and thanks so much

Great video . According to Bernard Moitessier (the writer of the long way) he suggested to have a maximum surface of sailbut divided in small sails. A 100% jib plus a staysail the advantages are being able to use a larger surface in light wind and easy to maneuver in rough weather.
