A reboot would need to be absolutely stellar, especially because the new series would immediately face the challenge of having to live up to the old (nostalgia) while redoing several story-beats where we already know the outcome. It would have to start seperating from how things evolve right from Anubis first and second season. I would much rather that we would continue in established universe, even based from earth where a new growing threat / challenge might bring Humans and Goa-uld together to face it together, or splinter them seeing this as a new chance to take a shot at Earth. It'd be awesome to see a much big "splinter" group like the Tok'ra where many of them are allies but a bigger section is either undecided or enemy. Simply having glowy eyes might not be enough to decide if you face friend or foe. Bringing Atlantis and Earth together would be awesome, but definatly expensive for sets / actors / etc. And bringing in Universe would be awesome, personally loved the new take SGU did, but again that's a whole new set / group of actors. Maybe not in the first season, but something down the line? Tone should be more on the episodic side, SGU worked as grittier because of the story, stuck on an exploration ship. If based on Earth or likewise outpost there should certainly be a story over the season(s) but like SG1 keeping most things episodic or dual-episodes would almost feel refreshing at this point where all series nowaday are effectively X-part movies telling one single story.

Personally I don't NEED former cast to return, but I would like to see it. I feel like it would tie a new series to the established universe of Stargate for old fans, and I hope that could be done without making it hard to get into for any newcomers to the Stargate universe.
@brianm.42435 ай бұрын
They are all very old now. The youngest cast members from the original cast may be able to come back as older command characters. Like Ben Browder as base commander, or shanks as a consultant. Bit they would be secondary characters, not action characters that you would see on screen most the time. Some actors have already passed due to age, for example Carmen argenziano (Jacob carter). Older actors like Richard Dean Anderson or Tony Amendola would be really hard to bring back full time.
@hundetuem5 ай бұрын
I think it is a need. Everything else would just be disrespectful to the original actors. The single most important thing is that some of the old production/writing crew MUST be involved: Brad Wright, Joe Mallozzi, Martin Gero, Robert Cooper. Otherwise I have ZERO trust that whatever some other group of writers/producers comes up with will not be true to the original intent and style. From the sounds of things, Brad Wright might be kept at arms length. Also, you need to consider that the IP needs to move on and be appealing to newer generations of people to survive and thrive, which may mean the formula and even the writers need to be different to be successful. Using the same formula as before could mean death for the franchise if it doesn't pull in the younger generations that have never seen older SG series before. While I agree with your sentiment, times change and at the end of the day it is a business and hard facts like a new viewer base may mean it might not be to your taste. I love Stargate. It has a universe with a lot of possibilities. The only thing it has to do is to slow down its spatial expansion and find other ways to get a newish feeling setting. What i mean by that is that SG1 used up the milkyway galaxy, Atlantis used up a second galaxy and Universe a whole bunch of galaxies. I would love to have a time skip into the future. Because earth feels always the same. I would love to have a setting some decades into the future, one in which humanity knows whats happening and in which the whole earth works towards a goal. Kinda like StarTrek in its timelinewise early stages. What can also be seen as problematic in my opinion is that StarGate uses up its enemys kinda early and only allow smaller threads within the known and already "cleared" areas. In StarWars on the other hand there are inner conflicts like with the always competing 2 sides of the force or with the seperatists and the republic. StarGate needs to creat a setting in which longterm content is a possibility and with many different branches that are all happening in this already introduced world and definitely not in a new one. Thats my opinion.

It has to have a similar “feel” to it. Stargate Universe lost some of that feel, to its detriment. Even at its darkest (like when SG1 went, literally, to hell) SG1 and Atlantis never took themselves too seriously. They knew they were a fun and somewhat cheesy sci-fi series, so while they told big stories with well written characters, they still gently winked at the audience with lines like “I thought we were going with Red Leader on this one”, “Sir, we can’t call it The Enterprise”, and from the pilot “it took us 15 years and 3 computers to MacGyver a system for the gate on Earth.” It was also, aside from the pilot movie and a couple of early episodes like Hathor, fairly family friendly. They even went back and removed the more family unfriendly moments from the pilot in its rerelease later on. This is something modern Star Trek has struggled with, with shows like Discovery and Picard showing extreme gore (Icheb) and very strong language (the f-bombs on Discovery are a far cry from Kirk’s “double dumb ass on you”). Star Trek seems to have realized this and Strange New Worlds seems to be largely avoiding it. Stargate Universe was notably less family friendly, especially early on, and I fear that this may have hurt its audience retention. I have two real fears with a new show. First, they try to actually pull off something like that “teen SG1” joke from the episode 200. Second, that they go the “Reboot: The Guardian Code” route and create a show with a very few ties to the original show other than a couple of names, where the showrunners actively dislike and take pains to mock fans of the original show. Having said this, changes are not inherently bad. SG1 is a very different beast from the movie and all the better for it. I love Stargate and I’m going to give whatever they put out a try. I just hope it’s a worthy follow up to the legacy that is already there.

Brad's idea with Daniel leading the team is the best by far. Brad should open up the first show, then others can take over later. Daniel would make a good Stargate Indy, with Sam as General, and frequent visits from any previous actor who wants to return.

one of the biggest issues that I saw with Stargate shows as they progressed was it is a story founded on fantasy but grounded in hard science fiction. Certain scientific "rules" siloed stories that were able to be told. For example, the 38-minute rule or the Zat gun 3 shot rule. Toward the end of the original show i definitely felt as though the ran out of stories to tell because everything was basically solved. One of the greatest reasons that Startrek was able to be so successful is that the show was purely science and exploration based - there was always something new to be discovered (even if sometimes the stories were bad/boring) For me personally i think it would be great to see a show that leaned in more to the historical fantasy/folklore that Stargate is based such as the ancient Egyptians, Norse Mythology and Camelot's court. definitely don't leave out the scientific portions of the show. use that more as a plot device to progress things forward.

G'day Darren & Adam, Polling a prospective audience is a smart move; also quite revealing. Of course, I would love to see 'SG-1' (TOS) back on the road but the ravages of time simply make that impossible. So, I purchased as much of 'SG-1' as I could and that will never be lost. Sincerely, I wouldn't be all that interested if, at least, some of the original creators were not involved. It's vital that some of the original concept 'DNA' be retained. Had RDA's character, Jack, been in the real USAF he would have been retired a long time ago. Similarly, with 'General' S. Carter's character. Bringing them back would lessen the outstanding work they did for all those years. But new story possibilities are still there. Perhaps Daniel Jackson had a son who followed his Dad into 'the family business'? That's why a new story arc in a new timeline must be supervised by some of the original writer/producers. A whole new writing staff MIGHT hit the right mix of drama and humour, however, that's unlikely and it would be a tragic mistake to have that 'recipe' lost forever. I found some of the later iterations way too dark and, sometimes, tediously depressing. I sure do want the show to come back but they must retain the idea not to take themselves too seriously. That was part of the show's magic. Almost, but never 'breaking the fourth wall'. I recall an excellent original episode storyline of there being a 'teenaged' duplicate of Jack. That young actor was brilliant and caught 'Old Jack's' mannerisms perfectly. That was down to the writers and directors. Only they can recreate the true 'feel' of the show we all loved and so, I'd watch any version of any SG story set up they wrote. Cheers, Bill H. P.S. For me, Atlantis, didn't work as it was, basically, static, the stories had to come to it even thought it a had a Gate. Perhaps in a revisited Atlantis, it is discovered that the whole installation was created as a time machine; then you have a 'Dr Who' element in an already popular show that, like 'Dr Who' could 'run forever'. B.H.

There are so many options.... Mirror universe, Ancients pov, some rando planet like Jonas and their SG-1 team, SG-the boys, with a biting satirical commentary on capitalism and corporate greed, SG-TNG but with Walters kid who is the main hero, or some combination of these. Jack/RDA was the backbone of SG-1. His non seriousness until it was time to be serious set the tone for the whole show. That's what I loved about SG-1, that's some of what was missing in U. In 1, all of the characters came around to Jack even if they started out stuffy and serious. Carter, Daniel, and Teal'c would not have evolved the way they did if it were not for Jack. That chemistry would be hard to replicate.

Too many of today’s writers/producers strive to subvert expectations which results in attempting to dismantle what has been established. This inevitably offends fans of existing material. In addition fun & entertainment gets lost due to an insistence on delivering “the message”. If they focus on telling great stories and avoid focusing on preaching (ie. SGU) I will give them a chance.

I don't want a reboot. It was good as it lasted. SGU strayed from the SG1/SGA formula, it lost the old crowd, it got very few new ones. I want a moving forward Stargate. We have now the Asgard Core, X303's and X302's, we have Atlantis, we have lots of galactic friends that might have survived the Ori. The production have to devise a good villain. Since SGU formula sunk the franchise, the production has to devise something new or go with the old winning formula.
@LJGrindewald2 ай бұрын
SGU made sense in terms of tone. I think if you were sent billions of lightyears away from home and on an ancient ship that doesn't fully work/every day being a fight for survival, strain on mental health and so on, it wouldn't be the same tone realistically plus, it wasn't the right people at the time or the planned exhibition for Destiny. I think it was refreshing. I love SG1 and Atlantis but they did repeat a lot of things SG1 did in SGA. SGU was uncharted territory. The SGA team were able to take more supplies with them and had safe steady gate travel.

After a significant hiatus, setting a new Stargate series in another galaxy offers a fresh start while maintaining a connection to Earth. Featuring Earth in a cameo or support role allows old fans to adjust to a new cast and storyline smoothly. This approach lets Earth transition into a more bureaucratic role, providing continuity without overshadowing the new, adventurous narrative. The new setting offers a clean slate for character development and plot exploration, free from the constraints of previous storylines. Stationing the new series in the Milky Way poses a challenge: any new enemy would need a plausible reason for escaping detection by Atlantis, the galaxy's powerful defensive asset. An enemy suddenly appearing without explanation would seem far-fetched, while an overwhelmingly powerful foe would feel contrived. By relocating the series to another galaxy, the introduction of new adversaries becomes more credible and compelling. This fresh setting allows for diverse and authentic threats to evolve organically within the story, maintaining the suspense and excitement that fans expect. In today's Hollywood, an Earth-based series risks becoming overly political and divisive. Instead of fostering critical reflection, the narrative might alienate viewers by focusing on contentious issues. By setting the series in another galaxy, the show gains creative freedom to explore universal themes without the baggage of current political climates. This setting enables the writers to craft stories that are thought-provoking and engaging without being mired in real-world controversies, ensuring the series remains accessible and enjoyable to a broad audience. Setting the Stargate series in another galaxy offers numerous advantages: it provides a fresh start while honoring Earth's legacy, ensures the plausibility of new threats, and avoids divisive political narratives. This new setting grants the show the creative freedom needed to thrive, promising a captivating and adventurous continuation of the beloved franchise.

@@Powerhaus88 I agree they will obviously push an agenda, but that doesn't necessarily mean it will be bad. The original versions also had agendas, but they were presented in a way that everyone could enjoy. I still think staying away from Earth gives them the most leeway, allowing them to push their agenda without tanking the show. This approach offers the best chance for the series to stay running, instead of having the pilot episode turn half the audience away right from the start.

I'm surprised at how many people are OK with a reboot. For me, there must be some sort of continuity with and a continuation of the previous series. I don't want the same story told again. I also think the existence of the stargate would eventually need to be public knowledge. This had already been planned before Stargate went out of production. It could be done or set up in a mini-series, which could function as an intro to a new series, as well as testing the fans' likes and dislikes to better make whatever comes after. Unfortunately, Amazon can't seem to get it together, and with all the financial losses suffered in the last few years the when, where, and how have become rather difficult and unpredictable. Extra note: "Prime" in the Abrams movies was not the original universe. The Spock we saw was not the real Spock. "Prime" was invented to give the illusion of continuity. They didn't want to pay for the rights for the original universe.

I have to say, the reboot of Star Trek was what got me interested in the franchise, I was still a little kid watching "Into darkness" I loved the vibes and the feeling. Today I have seen all Star Trek shows also Stargate and Babylon 5 and a few other scyfy shows like Andromeda. I understand the complains of some trek fans about "new trek" but I have to say that this new "chapter" has helped to get a lot of new fans, that also watched the older shows. I prefer scyfy to be deep, philosophical, trippy, it is best if complex new ideas or technology is shown, creative writing and good characters are important. Scyfy is about our future, it can both inspire and warn. I think what Stargate did very good was the focus on evolution, not just technology but also the human spirit. If humans become similar to the gods, will we be good guys or bad guys or something completly new. Trek has almost "normal" people. They are not so much of a utopia as star trek. The show feals very real and grounded. The politics are realistic and the cast very likable. It feels like a small movie to watch every episode. I have only love and respect for the people working hard and producing shows to inspire people. Scyfy is in the end just that. This is why I do not mind a reboot. I would of course have lots ideas for how to do it. I would also love a sequel. To see how this world evolved.

The SG series each suffered from power creep (can only threaten to destroy earth so many times before you have to go bigger). New series should be a continuation, but because they already did some timeline mucking, not everything needs to line up perfectly. It should be a public gate but stories about shady things happening. Introduce another galaxy where those humans are just starting their "SG1" and encounter our established galaxy and we have to be like the Asgards and be the senior race (all the while dealing with shady background stuff). We would act like the Vulcan ambassador to the early Enterprise, weighing discovery with teaching or hand-holding. Or stepping in and nuking a planet because there were Replicators found on it.

I'd rather see a continuation rather than a full reboot... by maintaining the "canon" of the original series, they'd have a rich and well-developed universe packed full of potential stories just waiting to be tapped into. And the original cast can either join full-time if they're open to it, make guest appearances when appropriate, or at the very least be acknowledged at various points in the show (ie, a ship named the O'Neil, references to the original missions, etc)... I'd recommend avoiding recasting unless it's absolutely necessary (tho casting a younger actor as a new take on O'Neil could work since he had a teenage clone that could be following his original's footsteps). Sure, some reboots work, like BSG -- but more times than not they just get tiresome real quick, especially if they keep redoing the same stories with new faces. I mean, how many times did we see Spiderman's origin story get retold....

I'd watch it in a heartbeat, as long as the content is available on a reasonable platform. Such as Prime. I'm someone who loved the original movie, SG, Atlantis AND SGU. Yeah, even SGU. Personally, I would want it to remain in the existing continuity and canon, BUT move somewhere extremely original. The original TV show ran out of ideas, and the Ori storyline wasn't the best. I personally loved the direction SGU was going in, giving us a whole different setting and it felt like it was heading somewhere interesting, AND I liked the darker side to it. I'd want to see them pick up with SGU somehow, whether a rescue mission or they reach a destination.

it's a big reason I couldn't get more than two or three episodes into it. I remember my parents forcing themselves to watch it on streaming just to say they did. I have never seen my dad so irritable. I think SGU was too much of a departure from SG1 and SGA. Odds are if they kept in the camaraderie that SG1 and SGA had between their main characters, it would've landed differently. I really disliked them jumping into each other's beds (even when controlling some poor sap on Earth(!)) but I could deal with it if that was my only problem. I didn't like it in TNG either, but I dealt with it because the core cast weren't perpetually at each other's throats at the same time.
