I'm rather bummed I missed the premiere, but so glad to finally be sitting down and watching this one! Only nitpick so far is that in the Prime Universe, it was established that all Constitution-class starships were commanded by men (not that I'm complaining you made Allenby the captain of the Excalibur, just a note). Hilarious that Prime universe female Mason has the hots for Jakande, lol, though a little odd that Avalon and Prime Allenby were antagonistic in the beginning. of course, their scene in the turbolift explains it. Loved the inclusion of scenes and bits from other series! Loved the cameos from Sam, Nick, George, and the others. Josh, you and the Avalon Universe team knocked it out of the park again, as always. Looking forward to the next one!
@joshuairwin201611 ай бұрын
Hi Christina! I'm glad you finally got to see it! I wanted to offer some things on your thoughts. With regards to The Excalibur having a female Captain. I saw this as a follow up to the Star Trek Continues Episode "Embrace The Winds". The Stardate of 7002.3 places the film after Star Trek Continues. My reasoning was that because so many heavy cruisers were lost, that the still space worthy frame of the Excalibur was repaired and put back into service. Allenby was seen as a safe choice, due to the reputation of her father, but as we'll learn in the next edition of "Tales From The Neutral Zone" many believed she was not up to the task. Between you and me Janice Lester's lines in "Turnabout Intruder" are a product of a 60s mindset and should be completely disregarded. But you could maybe interoperate her line "Your world of Starship Captains Doesn't Admit Women" as her saying that male Captains like Kirk are too devoted to the job to truly invest in a relationship with a woman.. Which there is truth to.
@joshuairwin201611 ай бұрын
With regard to the dynamic between Prime, Avalon, and Mirror, it was an example of things not always being what they seem. I saw Prime and Mirror as the Angel and the Devil on her shoulder. And sometimes doing the right thing can seem a lot harder in the beginning. At first, Prime is all business and comes across as a hard ass because she thinks Avalon has her head in the clouds during the meeting and is not truly focusing. Avalon realizes that Prime is giving her a hard time. It's a case of each seeing their own worse traits in the other. It put Avalon on edge with Prime, making her more open to befriending Mirror. On the flip side Mirror comes across as fun and relatable. Mirror's relationship with Avalon is a condensed portrayal of Narcissistic Abuse. Once the camaraderie and trust was established with Avalon, Mirror then turns cold and controlling attempting to manipulate Avalon. In the end even though Prime might have been all business at times, she's the version that truly believes in Avalon, and is worthy of her respect.
@ChristinaMoore7911 ай бұрын
@@joshuairwin2016 You know, I actually had the thought that this episode might come after "Embrace the Winds", though I did not pay attention to the stardate, lol. I really like the idea that Starfleet took chances with promoting female captains to capital starships after the Garrett v. Starfleet lawsuit from STC. Though also as you say, Lester's words were the product of a 60s mindset that didn't even want a woman in a command position (disregarding the fact that the actress in question was Roddenberry's mistress), so could definitely be one of those BS canon issues that are conveniently disregarded in the way so many fans ignore "Threshold" and "These Are the Voyages". And I definitely see what you mean about male captains and relationships, though the same could also be said of female captains, as those of the rank regardless of gender often seem to be married to their ships.
@ChristinaMoore7911 ай бұрын
@@joshuairwin2016 I also understand your reasoning here -- it totally makes sense when you put things in these terms. On another note, I have to admit that I was a little bit surprised that Mirror Jakande flipped on Mirror Allenby, but obviously glad he did!

I'm more of a Star Trek and Star Wars guy, so I didn't recognize all the ships / franchises. We need a complete list. Does anyone have one? 🙂 Here's what I can remember and picked up from some other comments: Star Trek (various universes and times) Star Wars (saw a Corvette, TIE fighter, and Imperial shuttle) Stargate The Orville Battlestar Galactica (both classic and new) Battle of the Planets (the Phoenix and theme music took me by surprise!) Babylon 5 Blake's 7 (I didn't recognize the _Liberator_ until I saw it in the comments. It's been 35-40 years since I watched that as a teenager. Dang.) Space: Above and Beyond??? (This was my favorite "off the beaten path" sci-fi series. Only ran for a season. Very underrated. Looks like a chig ship at 37:14.) What franchises am I missing that were there? A couple I wish I had seen (Did I miss them?): 2001: A Space Odyssey Lost in Space (not really a fan myself, but there is a big fan base out there so it deserved an appearance) On another note, I had to watch this twice. The first time through, I wasn't expecting the "whimsical" elements so I didn't enjoy it as much. However, the _Battle of the Planets_ reference made me chuckle, so I came back for another round. I adjusted my expectations and watched it a second time, and it was much better. I'm not as much a fan of the "whimsy", but the series is cleverly written, well acted and produced, and just overall well done for what it is. I watched a couple of Avalon's other efforts, and they are solid - though I will have to be in the right frame of mind when I watch them. 🙂 Overall guys, well done!

Wow, catching all the easter eggs in this is almost a full time job! Just caught the Terran ship was C137, which is Rick from Rick and Morty's designation. And as and Elder Nerd, I recognized so many ships. So, Now that we've had an "Into the ExcaliVerse", guess you all are going to have to top it. You've already set the ground work with the reveal of the traitor. But taking from comics again, maybe it's time for an "Amalgam" situation.

The multiverse has always had its uses for Star Trek. Thank you for this most worthy contribution. A ship with the design of the Liberator from Blake's 7 is certainly interesting. 🖖🏻🖖🏼🖖🏽🖖🏾🖖🏿

Amazing episode! “We reach” was a great nod to TOS. So many great things about this and everyone got to shine. Fantastic work.

This was absolutely amazing everyone! I was hooked the whole time! Everyone's personal stories, seeing the acting as different characters, it was so cool. Also I loved the nods to all the universes. Star Wars and Mass Effect were the most memorable, and it was cool to see the Borg Hunters, too! A true work of art and a labor of love. One of the best ST fan films I've seen... ever.

Naturally, the Terrans would be so busy being treacherous that they'd end up betraying each other to disaster.

What a fun show. And I had to laugh at all the ships from other "time streams," wondering whose model collection was raided, but in retrospect, the models appearing were probably a group effort; I find that those who like Star Trek also are willing to watch other series as well. Seeing the Yamato made me burst out laughing (I admit I have both the anime and live action versions). I may have to re-watch the show to see all the various ships. Outstanding effort! Slainté (Irish for "to your health!")

After I saw that over the past 7 years close to 30 fan films have been released that exceed 40 minutes, I decided to go ahead and tell my story. Time will tell, hopefully CBS/P will show the same grace it has for the past few years.
