Yes....I went to TankBund yesterday for nimajjanam ..I was standing beside a crane terminal . There some people are throwing the pooja related things in a plastic cover thrown into sagar ....I stopped some people but I was not stopped some people .....that situation makes me to think about the pollution....iamlike idle while they throwing... Vinayagar idols were made by Clay only in south India....it's harmless......infact there is a science behind every ritual.. every idols should be immersed in river purposely...by doing that ...huge amount of clay is getting dumped in river .....so 'clay' saves huge rainwater from getting wasted or overflowed....n it also increases ground water level..it was done during rainy days like adiperku ( September month)

Making ganesh idols with mud is compulsory in our puranas. That is beneficial spirutually and logically too. Our cultural ritual actually have many ayurvedic health and environmental benefits. To control this we eat thing called green veggies.
