Early Elton John was just so incredible. I was just the right age (mid teens) to appreciate both the music and the lyrics. Bernie Taupin is such a great lyricist and Elton John is the perfect musician to bring those words to life. Their pairing was a once a generation lightning strike. Next you should do "Madman Across the Water" or "All the Nasties" (from the same album) which is one of the most incredible deep cuts from Elton.

Elton John, the contemporary Gershwin. People forget sometimes that his voice was sooo good in the 70s. I'm 66 now, and one of my favorite concerts of all time was Elton playing the entire Tumbleweed Connection album with only Ray Cooper with him as his percussionist. It was phenomenal.

I was spoiled. I got to see Elton 3 times between 1975 and 1983. After his voice started changing I didn't care for him live quite as much. Those real early years 70' - 72', his performances were epic and he did a lot of jamming in concert.

There is a You Tube video with Elton talking with Elvis Costello about how this song was influenced by the work of Laura Nyro. Elton John & many musicians back then idolized Nyro. You can definitely hear her influence in this song . Love this song.

Please do yourself a favor and listen sometime to the complete studio version of this song. Amazing. There's a part before the last chorus where Elton's voice cracks perfectly! Dee Murray was a tremendous bassist and didn't deserve to get fired twice by EJ. Nigel is a fabulous drummer, too. Elton went off the rails after the mid-'70s, going from an inspired artist to a standard song-and-dance man. But I treasure those early albums.

Keep in mind how young these guys were in this video. Elton john was 23. Dee Murray (bassist) was 24. And so-cute Nigel Olsson on drums was only 21! These three were barely grown and able to make such consistently awesome music. I personally think Elton - and especially his band - were some of the absolute best of that era.

If you get to see Elton's farewell concerts, he plays this song, and the drummer, after 52 years, is Still Nigel Olsson! (along with Davey Johnstone who joined in 1972 and Ray Cooper who joined in 1973) plus some newer members. Dee Murray was with Elton for about 22 years and passed away a number of years ago. Did you notice the vocal harmonies? The drummer and bassist do harmonies on all of his songs.

The song may have not even been recorded yet. It wasn't released until 1971. The Live Album Version recorded in New York City is called "Live 11-17=70" and it has the song with an extended jam session which is smoking hot and takes it up several notches.

Of course 'Burn Down The Mission' is a fantastic song, which is probably why he's still playing it now in the farewell concerts. (The full version is fully orchestrated, superb stuff. But he does it so well here with just a couple of them on stage.) Full respect must be given to Bernie for the words, though no reactor will ever acknowledge this point. But please please, can we listen to some of his newer stuff? I grew up with him - not literally, but with his music in my life - and I like his 80s music just as much as his 70s work. Certainly no one can have the creativity at 74 as they did at 24, but it didn't all end in 1975! My top 3 Elton tracks are from the 70s (Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding), the 90s (The One) and 2001 (This Train Don't Stop There Anymore). Let's hear it for old man Elton! I saw someone below saying 'everyone has five good years before they fade away'. I wish I could 'fade away' quite as productively as Elton John.

Since writing the above, I've been thinking about Bernie Taupin. No, not like that. But suppose Reg never met Bernie, where would his career have gone? I've no doubt he would have been a successful musician, maybe even a star. At least for a little while. But without Bernie's huge variety of lyrics, the words that forced Elton to produce the astonishing variety of songs that he did? He probably would have faded then, perhaps a judge on a celebrity singing show, They do kind of touch on this in a song off Captain Fantastic, Bitter Fingers: It seems to me a change is really, really needed I'm sick of tra-la-las and la-de-das No more long days hacking hunks of garbage Bitter fingers never swung on swinging stars They did write rubbish, lots and lots of it, before the heartfelt Bernie of Your Song and the widely-read Bernie of Burn Down The Mission emerged. Just coincidentally, when I finished this video, KZbin recommended a channel to me, someone I'd never seen before reacting to Someone Saved My Life Tonight. Another song off Captain Fantastic, every track of which is a 10. Except Bitter Fingers, which is an 11.

Some interesting facts about the baby boomers. Since they were born around World War 2, they were the first to constitute the surge of a large number of that generation group. So they in a way has the whole world to themselves. Notice how mellow Elton John is when he was young. As he grow older he is a bit cocky, but his kindness for people is always there. That is what I like about the baby boomers. They respect the generations that preceded them, like my Dad, yet they have the power and the authority (remember I said that the Moon is three times as powerful as the Sun in Ved8c Atrology) and yet they have a calming and soothing effect as bosses as they never forget their humble roots (Moon rules the mind). Oh yeah, baby boomers like jewellery. You are observant!

If u r an Elton John fan a must-see movie is "Rocketman". The movie took the Golden Globe award for Best actor. I think his best record was his self-entitled second album release in 1970. Tumbleweed Connection is my favorite Elton John album. Elton's piano style has always had it's roots in southern gospel style and this album is tailored to that specifically. It has a lot of great songs and 'Burn Down the Mission' is the highlight.

Elton's early stuff is why I love him. For me, I can't say I'm really into the latter part of his catalog, save for a few songs here and there. But that's the case with a lot of artists, I think - as they become more successful, they lose a lot of that "hunger" that drove them in the early years. A few exceptions to this, imo, such as John Mellencamp, who's still putting out great stuff after all these years. Just my 2 cents - your mileage may vary, as they say. ;-)

Such a shame that this wasn't the full song but an edited version for TV. There's a full second Verse/Chorus missing. As others have done I'd recommend the 17-11-70 version, 2002 Orchestral Version, or even the 1986 Orchestral Version (Elton's voice is shot during this one, due to nodules on his vocal chords but the music is amazing regardless.)

I do think it's a shame to use this BBC live version, because it leaves out 4 verses of the original. My preference is always the studio version, to get the original meaning and message... this one was badly cut for time, so the story sort of stops halfway, and there's a lot of "interlude" rock and a bluesy exit... but it's not the whole song. Again, kudos to Bernie Taupin - he was the man behind the lyrics who truly made Elton John great in his first decade. The lyrics got sort of pop and never rose to Taupin's level again. Elton John is AMAZING!

There's a much longer live version from the album 11-17-70 with the same nacking band. Davey Johnstone, Elton's guitarist for all these years, had yet to be introduced. Also, the 11-17-70 version is soo much better acoustically, it was as close to being there at the time. Love your channel Harri! #Peace!!
