Yeah, the 1970s were not lacking for soft sad songs. You've already hit "Alone Again" by Gilbert O'Sullivan and "Without You" by Harry Nilsson and "Seasons in the Sun" by Terry Jacks, but there's still "All By Myself" by Eric Carmen and "Cat's in the Cradle" by Harry Chapin" and doubtless more. The 1970s were not shy with the tearjerkers.

Randy wrote a lot of amazing songs in his short time here on Earth. Many of his songs were re-sung by other artists like Dolly, Kenny, and Alabama. His song I'm In a Hurry (And Don't Know Why) was originally performed by him and did well, but it was taken to #1 by Alabama. Sadly, leukemia cut his life short. RIP Randy. You were amazing while you were here.

Most people don't realize all the great songs that Randy wrote because so many other artists used his material. I remember when Randy died back in 2004, almost 20 years ago already, that does not seem possible. Randy was only 48 years old when he passed away from Leukemia and we lost a great talent, his life was cut way too short.

My then-boyfriend broke up with me the week before my birthday, just a few months after my mom passed away. This song was SO meaningful at that time and proves that music can sometimes reach you when nothing else does. In hindsight, it was good that we parted ways, as it left room for my now-husband to come into my life, but boy - when it happened, I don't think his timing could've felt any more painful with that breakup.

@@mattbecham597 I'm not quite understanding your comment? It shouldn't be hurtful to lose someone you love, at a sensitive time, after just experiencing the very traumatic death of a parent? I don't know you, nor you me, but that was a really jerky thing to say. Wow.

@@mattbecham597 ah, ok. My apologies then for misunderstanding. It didn't have anything to do with him buying me a gift. I think that might have been easier to deal with. This is one of my favorite songs of all time! I loved it when it came out when I was a little girl, and I love it now at nearly 54! Glad you gave it a listen! He had a lot of success writing country songs, so it's funny that you brought that up. And Amber, Dolly recorded a cover of this that you will love! Sadly, Randy Vanwarmer died in 2004, at just 48 years old. He had leukemia. What a gorgeous voice, and heartbreaking song.

After losing his father when he was 12, his Mum moved the family to Looe in Cornwall UK three years later. It was here that he began writing songs and playing the folk clubs around Cornwall. He wrote, " Just When I Needed You Most " at the age of 18 with Tony Wilson of the group Hot Chocolate. Eventually he was signed to Bearsville Records New York and after a move back to the States at 23, the song became a hit in 1979. However after a move over to country music he became a very successful songwriter for many country artists which have been mentioned in the comments. He was sadly to die at the age of 48 in 2004. 😢 Beautiful song, and relatable to a lot of people. 🎶💔

The first time I heard this song was shortly after my first wife left me and it was a perfect description of where I was. I'd been laid off the second time in seven years and then found a better paying job that required us to move out of state and our children were still in school. We talked it over and visited the new job site together, courtesy of the company that hired me. We had our plans made and I took the job. Ten weeks later she told me she wanted a divorce, just a few weeks before our 19th anniversary. It took me two years to (mostly) recover from it. That's been almost thirty years, all that's left is a lingering bitterness.

A similarly understated singer from the UK was Clifford T Ward. He was championed by the legendary BBC DJ, Sir Terry Wogan, because of his love for Clifford's masterpiece, 'Home thoughts from abroad'. Clifford wasn't a huge commercial success, but has a loyal following among those of us who can appreciate the honesty, emotion, and poetry he puts into his songs. Try some CTW, & see what you think. As well as 'Home thoughts from abroad', his song 'Gaye' was pretty big for him, especially in South America!
