This may not be something with as much importance as the other stories in this video, but this comment definitely deserves more likes than it already has. Having been friends with someone on the student council during my high school years, I can confirm that you guys don't get any real power of leadership that you should have in a place that should help you grow as a person. Of course, this may not apply to all institutes/schools but I think the point was well made either way.

(Disclaimer: this may sound very un-PC for those living inside a western bubble) Or she is saying I'm not racist because my son is biracial. She does ask for a white Dr. but also names the region (Pakistan) of the Doctors she does not want seeing her son. Meaning she wants (in her mind) the "best" Dr. to help her son. Living in the middle east for several years, I can agree not all Doctors are created equal and the language barrier can and will present problems. That doesn't make them bad people or incompetent, just less capable for the task at hand. I think western Dr. is the term she was looking for as "brown skinned" sounds 100% racist to anyone. My wife went to several Indian and Pakistani doctors while living in the middle east. She found a Pakistan Dr. that she really liked, but the communication was stressful. Example: Once it took us several minutes to understand he wanted her to put vaseline (petroleum jelly) up her nose to help with sinus problems. Not menthol, just original vaseline. He also said not wearing a coat in the "winter" was making her sick. Not that it matters, but the winter temps are a freezing 60 - 70 degrees F. If you have ever been on the phone with overseas customer service reps. you understand the obstacle, plus a little head bob for good measure. Most of the time the conversions were her nodding ok and him writing a prescription for antibiotics and neither knowing what just happened. But he was a very nice man.

trikyriky66 This is Canada not the middle east all doctors are held to a standard that is set here... meaning they are all skilled in english as it is the official language... in the middle east maybe because there is so many languages it can be hard, here in Canada ypu must go through Canadian medical schools to become a doctor which includes but is not limited to writing medical journals to be read/reviewed by other doctors before you formally see patients, so no matter what colour, or ethnicity you are in canada it is impossible for you to become a doctor without appropriate language skills

trikyriky66 I'm Canadian and I've seen doctors from a variety of races. In fact one of the most thorough and knowledgeable doctors I've ever been to was middle Eastern. And one of the most clueless and dismissive was white. (I've also been to incredible white doctors and shitty middle Eastern doctors.... I have a lot of health problems and have moved a lot.) Race doesn't matter. Individual skill does.

trikyriky66 I get your point but she is in Canada. To be a doctor in Canada nomatter what race you are, you have to pass the standard as being doctor in Canada so background should not matter

I was never on student council, but one of my best friends was. She's a hard worker, and wanted to be a leader. Instead she made paper decorations and slideshows. It's also a popularity contest. So of course the rest of the student government was lazy and forgetful and mean. My friend was one of few people on the council that did anything. The system needs to be changed.

Samantha Cudney It completely sucks as an organization in just about every school. There's no motivation to succeed so people do nothing. If they gave it a separate grade where people that are elected but don't do anything meaningful get a bad grade then things might be different. You're also right about it being all about popularity. Some of the kids with the worst grades in the lowest tier classes were there. A prerequisite should be good grades because you can't provide adequate leadership if you cannot provide for yourself

Yeah! I totally agree with you, I had similar friends who were put through the same situations. Also, I was apart of leadership and I left simply because my leadership teacher was an absolute bitch! And I'm not saying this in a - 'cause I didn't like her -- she genuinely wasn't a good teacher. She very much had favourites, multiple times she called me lazy, unreliable, and she taught A.P Math, and I remember a friend of mine told me and other students that she called him a dumbass, and told him he was going nowhere in life simply because he was struggling with the subject matter. INSAAANNNEE!!!! Not to mention, looking back on high school, I very distinctly remember she had a photo of her husband in black face.... No lie and because we were H.S.S obviously we're a little too young to realize the implication and some even thought it was funny but now looking back... so wrong. One woman who should never have been allowed to be a teacher.

S G I had a teacher like that. It's the same sort of story as with the guy. I struggled with math, teacher called me useless and good-for-nothing, and it really messed me up. I was in elementary school, though so that was awful. But teachers like that just . . . shouldn't be teachers.

My best friend did the same thing at our graduation this year. She wrote a great speech about how the class didn't always get along, but when it came to standing up for one of us (usually against the school's administration, who seemingly had this thing where they tried to be very controlling to the point of threats with the class) we would be very close and fight together. After being asked to write her speech she passed in on to the guidance counselor to "check for grammatical errors" and was given a completely different speech instead. Now my friend takes a lot of pride in her writing, and she is amazing at it so when she read the thing again she knew right away it wasn't the same. Instead of going somewhere to complain she became determined to memorize and present the speech she wrote. And that's exactly what she did. Thankfully her mic wasn't cut off, she was sneaky. She began to do the "fixed" speech, read maybe two sentences then continued with her original piece. The administration took notice and tried to stop her by saying "that's not the speech" she simply replied with "but that's not what i wrote" and the guidance counselor just sat back down, defeated. She took a deep breath and continued the piece she wrote while the few people who knew what was going, myself included, snickered at the faces of the administration; who just sat there looking bitterly towards the distance because they knew there wasn't anything they could do anymore. And when she finished the whole class stood up and clapped while the people responsible for the phony speech put on fake smiles and started her down as she left the stage.

Plot twist: Despite the heroic story, the school administration was totally right and the speech was inappropriate but everyone thought it was "cool" because of that so they clapped. Just saying. Don't take sides because something sounds like a good story.

Seeing everyone stand up at "the end" of the Valedictorian's speech, just made me want to stand up and give not only a round of applause to that guy, but also to the administration for cutting his speech short and proving his exact point. The way he just casually walks off stage, perfectly executed!

I was also Chair at my school for five years but I had a completely different experience. The teachers were super supportive and helped me even go to the house of parliament about some issues and we even got a meeting with David Cameron (previous prime minister of the UK). We managed to reduce bullying at our school almost completely and introduced new programs to students who wanted internships. For the teachers to not realise what power students can have, especially when someone this passionate really cares, is a huge insult and can suppress so much good work from being done at the school. The whole point of graduation is to show support to the next generation of minds. Teachers should support the idea of making improvements. I am so proud of that student for speaking out and making his own voice heard.

How dare you put your prejudices and racist views before the welfare of your child.Your child is sick it shouldn't matter what the colour of the doctor's skin is ( or teeth as I heard her say in the video) if they can help your child get better than that all that matters. and Fyi doctors who come from other countries to canada have to go through more training and schooling before they can practice medicine here so they are more qualified than a white doctor who went to school here in canada.

Plenty of people complain about voters that vote for the 'popular' or 'handsome' candidate for office in actual government elections. The fact is that we do judge a book by the cover as a society and have to learn to look deeper. Again, unless you want to start declaring what is 'proper' criteria for how to vote and who to vote for (see being a total authoritarian), then there's nothing you can do about it. And in my opinion there's nothing that you should do about it. Kids need to learn by making their own mistakes and recognizing that some people get to positions of power (real or perceived) by means that not everyone will think is fair, but we live in a democracy and learning to live with the results of a fair system is part of being an adult.

Okay okay, your guys are right he is not really talking about this. However he said something along the lines of "despite some of the outstanding people in our school there is a lack of a real student government." I interpreted that as the amazing people were not voted into the student government. I realize this is not really what he was saying, I guess maybe I just wanted to add that? And I realize that I cannot tell people how to vote, I merely said that there has to be a better way, in school. Of course real politics are also a popularity contest, but you also vote on how their beliefs align to your own. Edit: and I have NOTHING against "cool" or "popular" kids, I am just saying that they are the only ones ever elected. Which is unfair. Maybe nothing can be done about it without making it even more unfair, I was just releasing frustration I guess.

To everyone in the comments shouting about going to war with North Korea: at least go read up on the Korean War first. There's a reason the US doesn't want to go to war with them again - all of the UN couldn't fix things over there, and picking a fight with NK also means picking a fight with China. Something needs to be done, yes, but it's a lot more complicated than just "invade NK!"

She said she's seeking therapy, this implies something traumatizing happened to her. Why would you need therapy for something that you don't remember or wasn't traumatizing.
@GiantSavage117
@GiantSavage117 7 жыл бұрын
I agree its fishy, but not remembering something important like that can be traumatizing in itself. I take anti-depressants, and once my doctor proscribed a cheaper, supposedly better working, drug than the one he had me on at the time. This drug had a very rare side effect of short term memory loss, I took the drug for a year, and found out from my loved ones that I had been acting a little weird during that year. I would ask questions I had already asked before or tell people I wanted to go do something with them and we had done that very thing a day or week before. When I discovered this it was pretty frightening, I had no memory what so ever, of several weeks worth of my life, I had no idea what I had done during those days and weeks. I could have done some bad things and never known id done them until the consequences of my actions rolled around. Thankfully the worst thing that happened was I annoyed my girlfriend because I wanted to watch a movie that we had already watched several times, but it could have been worse. I'm not really defending this woman. I believe she was in the wrong here, she shouldn't have commented on the matter before knowing what actually happened. The fact that she did comment so quickly makes me believe she was trying to hide something. But I can understand a need for therapy of some sort, just the thought that you might have been raped while under the influence would be frightening enough to warrant it.

@Lightor
@Lightor 7 жыл бұрын
@GiantSavage117 I'm not saying it's not possible by any means, hearing everyone say something horrible happened to you could make you need therapy, no doubt. The thing is, in your case you know what happened, you know something out of your control took place, and it affected people in your life. In this case, she is, in my opinion, either 1. getting therapy based on what people are telling her happened, or 2. something horrible did happen, but she's just not talking about it. I would normally lean towards the latter case because victims aren't often outspoken, but there seems to be too much evidence pointing to nothing like that taking place. Bottom line, if something bad happens to me and I don't remember, I could need therapy to help me process what happened and move on from it, but I'm not sure I'd call that being traumatized. Maybe it's just me and I'm totally wrong on how I'm basing that, it's just my dumbass opinion lol.

Well lets say, you woke up one morning after binge drinking and do not remember anything but then your friend calls you or comes over to ask you if you're ok? Or to tell you that you were violated when you were drunk; just learning that and not being 100 percent sure that you were not raped, can cause someone trauma. Not everyone has the same mental state and there for some are easily traumatized while others aren't. I know if I was in that position, I would freak out and go straight to a hospital to make sure. I wouldn't have my peace of mind until I found out the truth.

As someone who was always off out from leadership positions for the exact reason of feeling like there was a lot of work with no real benefits in terms of getting yourself heard, it's both relieving and reassuring to see someone who took the platform they were given and respectfully speak out on it's issues. Taking a stand like that takes major balls and I'm so so glad we get to see people who are willing to take that risk.

I can honestly say that I agree 100% with Peter. As the current Vice President of the NHS at my high school I have tried endlessly to develop a community in my school. The principle always holds class meetings expressing that the student body needs to come together and be more productive as a whole. However, whenever any of the students in the position of an elected representative of their class, or even the teacher advisers, sit down and propose their ideas they immediately get shut down with no opportunity to ask why.

I so happy that the student used his time to try to bring in some insight to his schools situation. Especially at the graduation ceremony. I wanted to audition with a friend to sing a song for our graduation but we're told by a judge we'd have to choose a different song because ours was "too happy" about moving on. They wanted a boring, somber air about the whole place. Because even graduation isn't really about the students, it's about the faculty getting their recognition and parents getting to be happy about spending sometimes hundreds of dollars on graduation gear and memorabilia.

Love that BAMF of the day story. They tried to silence this guy, but it only made the crowd's support for him even stronger. They wanted order, but what they got was an even more enthusiastic crowd. It's always an awesome feeling whenever an authoritarian power tries to cut its people off and fails miserably. Beautiful metaphor for the rest of our country.
