I got two mountain hydrangeas in containers. It’s the tiny tuff stuff series. Their blooms last until frost & compact enough without needing to prune. It seems to require more water then the mop heads. Love this plant!

Love mountain hydrangeas! They just look so great all year long. We particularly like "Mountain Mania" because of its gorgeous peachy color that fades to a yellow chartreuse with hints of pink - such a statement! Cannot wait to see the big fall show...

What a gorgeous plant that mountain hydrangea is! I looks wonderful alongside the blue green hostas(?) and red coleus. You put plants together in such interesting combinations. There is visual interest in your garden no matter where one looks.

Looks great there! My long term plan calls for planting under & around 2 good size Oaks. I've let the natives there show my where the pockets are. This fall after the Aster & Solidago have bloomed, they're getting moved to the wildflower area & many Hosta, ferns, Geranium, Heuchera etc are going in their spots. It's a trial into "smarter not harder" landscaping, I'll see how it goes! Would love to add this beauty!

I planted a beautiful mountain hydrangea in zone 6a. Never blooms despite no pruning- I think our late winter impacts it. But it is worth having for the gorgeous foliage. Yours is even more beautiful. I stopped “panic watering” in the afternoon after watching one of your earlier videos so thanks for that advice too!

Hi Jim! I don’t see you using pine bark fines as much in your newer urban garden (vs how frequently you used in your old / larger suburban garden), although you frequently say you have clay soil in your new home. Is there a reason for this or am I simply missing you using the pine bark fines?
@JimPutnam3 жыл бұрын
I actually stopped because so many people watching couldn't find it. I covered the area in compost at the beginning of this project. It gets mixed in as I go. Goo question
@mdwalker30343 жыл бұрын
@@JimPutnam Makes sense! I guess I am lucky…I can get pine bark fines at a local Southern States dealer in Annapolis area for a great price. I use it consistently and it has been a huge reason for success in my wet clay soil. Thank you for the explanation. Love your channel!

Wow, that’s beautiful. I’ve been wanting a mountain hydrangea for awhile. I’m not sure how easy that will be to find though.

Thanks for watching. There is a lot more interest in them recently. We have almost to many H. macrophylla these days.

The challenge will not be finding it, but finding it that big. There are many small independent nurseries that ship that offer this plant, but in a smaller size.

First time I've seen this plant. Got two huge pots on layby. Am hoping to plant some sort of Hydrangea in one or both of them. I wonder if I can find this one here in Adelaide South Australia x

The hydrangeas are gorgeous and I've been considering whether to grow an oakleaf hydrangea in Z8b. The challenge would drought in Central Texas. I'm not eager to take on a plant that will require extraordinary care, but I love hydrangeas. I know someone who lives on a road called Punctatum. You might know the gardening reference.

Another one to add to my list… I wonder if this needs more sun for the gold dusting to show up. For H. serrata Kogane Suruge, NurCar recommends more sun for the brighter gold leaf color.
@emmalavenham3 жыл бұрын
In our experience, these plants color up nicely in filtered sun - just like Ted Stephens (NurCar) recommends - and grow quickly - at least our Mountain Mania.

Love this Hydrangea! I had a quick question. I have about a 24 ft stretch of full sun between me and the road. I plan on getting a black iron 3 ft fence "I have an old old house" and I planted two alternating shrubs in this area. I have cascade butterfly bush then a white knockout rose. I alternated these one after the other. I was curious if you think that will be a good combo. Thank you

You said it will grow to 4' and then planted it very close to your path. Are you expecting to have to move it when it matures or are you planning to just keep it pruned down? (One reason I ask is that I have a Tiny Tuff Stuff that's maybe just a little bigger than I'd like)
@gaiachild39503 жыл бұрын
With Serratas, you'll probably lose the blooms the next year after pruning, but that's all that will happen. Serratas are advised to never prune for that reason. I have one that's too close to a Bobo that I am debating on transplanting to give them both more room.

Can hydrangea stay in a pot and thrive? I’m in Eastern NC

They are not the easiest things to keep happy in containers. A hydrangea paniculata variety would probably be easier. Even those become water hogs pretty quickly

You can if you don't mind the watering and feeding as much as hanging baskets. The larger the pot, the easier. I have "Mini Penny" in a large pot on my front porch. It looks great. It's a smaller plant in general which helps. I also have one called "Vintage Blush Hydrangea" in a two gallon pot on a sun porch. It's almost an experiment though. I don't know it would make it through a winter even in my 7b. It seems wimpy. I've had other fancy ones that just can't keep buds during a cold snap. Anyway, I'd only do it if you have a good sense for remembering to water and feed.
