I met an awesome batik artist at the National Cultural Center in Tamale, Ghana. Fortunately for me she not only sells fabric, but offers classes.
This is the day I got to learn how to do batik from Sikena (aka: C.K.), the Batik Master of Tamale.
To contact Sikena:
WhatsApp +233 024 350 7612
Email: sikenamohammed12@gmail.com
1 person, or 10, she is ready to teach batik
The process of batik looks easy, but requires a lot of focus and concentration.
How-To Batik:
1. Dip stamp in melted wax
2. Shake off excess wax
3. Step up to fabric and place stamp BEFORE the hot wax cools and HOPE you get it straight and evenly spaced with well defined edges
4. Repeat until there's no more space on the fabric
5. Mix dye
6. Soak fabric in dye
7. Dry fabric
8. Dip fabric in boiling water to remove wax and set dye
9. Wash, rinse and dry fabric
10. Get cool shirt made
If you find yourself in Tamale, Ghana be sure to look Sikena up and take her class. It only takes a couple of hours and you'll be going home with an awesome souvenir that you can actually say, "I made this MYSELF!"
*Just a note, this is not a sponsored video. I paid for my class and materials just like anyone would.
I hope you get a chance to do this.
Have fun!

That was so interesting and fun to watch! You did a great job of aligning your crocodiles but for someone like me ( old) , I’d be quite happy to let her do the work. Good thing there’s a choice. There were so many stamp choices I probably would have left with at least five shirts in all different colors. The animal sounds when you pressed on the design stamp were fun. The shirt turned out great and looks really good on you. I love 💕 that you put the heart on it for Tim. Sikena did an excellent job of explaining the process as it went along. I can understand why people are so proud of themselves when they participate even a little. 😄😄👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

I'm debating whether I can justify having 2 batik shirts in my luggage, but I don't know what design I'd pick for the second one. She already said that she'd print whatever I wanted if I want another one. I have to say that I didn't mind not doing the dying and washing. Not sure my back would have enjoyed that process. I probably would have made a mess. Making batik was a lot of fun and I'd recommend it to anyone.

How amazing! It really did turn out green! At first, I was sure it would end up grey. But, it really is green. I'm impressed! The finished shirt looks fantastic on you! Interestingly, I did batik many years ago - used the cloth to make curtains. I felt so proud of myself. However, I brushed the hot wax on with a brush - didn't even think of using stamps the way this woman in Ghana does. What a wonderful idea and a fantastic result! Congratulations, Tina. Good for you!

I know, the color really went through a few changes. The shirt is really comfortable, too. The tailor did a great job. What did you 'paint' on your batik curtains? When I was young, the technique was always discussed with a brush application like you used. Here they use stamps to print adinkra cloth. I presume the method just transferred over. Glad you enjoyed the video! Thanks for the comment.
