Stealing candy is "just being a kid". Smoking weed once is "just being a kid". Speeding on a highway is "just being a kid". Disorderly conduct is "just being a kid". KIDNAPPING??? TORTURE??? SCALPING??? If you're in your late teens and you think that that's not a "big deal", then you need to be in jail. The blame is never entirely on the parents (which is often an excuse to remove any responsibility), it's also the environment. School, neighborhood, etc. If they learned that those things aren't a serious crime, then a simple warning isn't gonna cut it.

I could see the 'They're just kids' argument if they just kidnapped the guy and let him go fairly quickly. But, they kidnapped him, chose to torture him, and then chose to broadcast it. The only reason the victim got out was because he escaped, not that they realized they made a mistake and let him go. That wasn't a mistake, it was a cascade of horrific desicions. Even without the kidnapping charge, torture and a hate crime should at least get a few years in jail before probation. Edit: What I meant by my first sentence was the 'they're just kids' argument is used to tone down the punishment of someone who makes an irrational desicion. To me, if they had taken someone, realized the stupidity of it, and released them, the argument would be more applicable. The lesser sentence would make sense. Here, they had every opportunity to stop and turn themselves in, but they kept on choosing to do horrible things.

Imagine the outcry from people if this was a white filmer filming whites torturing a black guy and then getting only 4 years of probation plus community service. People would want to see the filmer dead. The problem is it's black vs. whites, so nobody will care about this in 2-3 days.

It's sad that our culture has become so obsessive that it just swooped into that kid's life, made him a celebrity, jerked his family under a microscope, unleashed opinions and criticism, passed a myriad of judgments, then abandoned him. It feels like a emotional rape. Supporting the child and encouraging him would have been simple - and, perhaps, enough. Our media obsessed society is violent in its mood swings. I understand why so many parents try to keep children away from social networking. It's too intense.

I would bet that the reason that girl got such a light sentence in that racist kidnapping case is because she took a plea and agreed to testify against the other defendants. It's a pretty common strategy with prosecutors to find the person who did the least in a crime to rat on the ones who did the most, which means they could be throwing the book at the other criminals in that case. Or I could be wrong and they could all get slaps on the wrist, which would be a disgusting miscarriage of justice if they did.

purpandorange good point, I hadn't thought of that. I still think the sentence is too light even with that though

Dietrich Stieglitz, I don't think forgetting about what you did would be good for your "victims", it would make it easier to happen again. Forgiving however is good as they won't resent you anymore (even if you don't think you deserve it, it's more for their sake). And like RANDO said, if you want to be sure if they are doing alright, it would be an idea to find them on social media and apologize. They probably never will contact you because they can't be sure if you have changed. This comment actually made me ponder if my bullies know they bullied me, and if they have any remorse for doing it.

I'm gonna get flack for this but I feel like it needs to be said. It somewhat bothers me that some celebrities out there have seemingly reacted to this kid as if they've NEVER heard of the concept of bullying before in the past. It's great to see a victim of bullying getting support, but my god MILLIONS of children get bullied every day and no one does a damn thing to stop it. I have no doubt that a lot of people out there have seen or participated in bullying, did nothing about it, yet are seemingly heartbroken now over this story. They're willing to help him out, be with him, support him, protect him, give him special experiences, but all of the other children who have to deal with bullying basically are getting ignored. Why not do something like donate to anti-bullying campaigns? Why not make a point to address bullying as a whole and not just this scenario? Spread the love to ALL people have been bullied, not just the popular kid on the internet. In fact, how is this going to stop bullying at all? It to some extent feels like the scenario where you get your kid to stop crying by promising him ice cream. You haven't addressed ANYTHING to do with what caused him to cry in the first place. I just felt the need to say that. I want the actual problems of bullying to stop, this isn't gonna help when everyone's forgotten who Keaton is 2 weeks from now.

"If you are made fun of, don't let it bother you" ... I admire this kid on so many levels but I just want to correct that. If someone is bullying you, its perfectly normal and okay to let it bother you. You're human, and sensitive, and have emotions. Putting extra pressure on yourself to not let bullying bother you adds another level to the trauma. It's okay to feel bad, and then cope, and then move on.

Agreed. The issue there is the bullying, not being hurt by it. And there are no correct channels in my experience either. I did it - I went to teachers and guidance consolers and eventually the vice principal came up to me and told me to “just stop acting weird” because doing his job was too much to ask of him. I ended up suspended over a “dress code violation” around a headband that literally no teacher took issue with. So many people have shared similar stories with me. It’s so messed up how schools DON’T deal with it.

Its also okay to put your foot up someone's ass if all else fails. Sometimes fighting back is the only option. If there's one thing I taught my children, that's definitely it. What's scary is the kids that take it and take it and just keep on taking it. Then a beast is unleashed. Refer to Columbine..
@ralphmacsavage7 жыл бұрын
LA Fresh Life the problem isn't just not letting it bother you, it's praying it doesn't get to you. Eventually you get so tired of it, it will stop bothering you, but when it gets to you, and rots you from the insideout. It's horrible to say the very least. (I'd swear, but this is a bit more serious matter)
@goodgirl1407 жыл бұрын
A lot of us who are adults may not quite understand, or maybe forget, but when you're a kid with so few life experiences being bullied is absolutely awful. Your whole life is school and playing with friends. When you don't have friends, and instead everyone is taunting you, it feels like the world hates you. You're stuck with that same group of people for years, and it's even hard to concentrate on school work for fear that you'll be picked on any moment. Simple things like finding somewhere to sit at the cafeteria, or on the bus, or being alone at recess cause all kinds of anxiety. The horrible thing is that through the years it can take a very serious tole on your life as you become more and more withdrawn from life making the depression worse. I really feel we don't take bullying seriously enough, and I really hope people look at this and understand just how much it harms a childs development.
@torilee66777 жыл бұрын
Not to mention the bullied kids that are also being abused at home like I was. In middle school I learned not to report bullying because the vice principal took issue with me for “being weird” since he didn’t want to do his job. And then I went home and got the same BS I got at school from my “mother”. It’s school administration’s job to take it as seriously as they claim to. (Zero tolerance my ass.)
@goodgirl1407 жыл бұрын
Tori Green. Thats awful :-( When I was 12 there was this girl that was tormenting me in my class. I kept faking being sick to avoid going to school, and my mom figured out what was going on. When she went to the principal, the principal suggested I switch classes to avoid her, which was bad because my one friend was already in my class and my bully had already convinced all of my previous "friends" that if they hung out with me, she'd go after them as well. When my mom brought this up, the principal said that was the only option, and if I didn't want to take it then my mom should teach me to not take "schoolyard banter" so seriously. Teachers really like to boast about their 0 tolerance policy, but I went to the teacher all the time when I was in grade school and I eventually just gave up by the time I was 12, because nothing ever changed.

I am absolutely appalled and shocked that they let those kidnappers off on such an easy sentence. If the roles were reversed and 4 white teenagers kidnapped a black man, cities would quite literally burning right now. I think regardless of race or position, kidnappers and torturers shouldn't be able to freely roam the streets. I think it's fucked up that role reversal even has to happen for people to realize what the problem is, and I think that's a larger indication of what value Americans place on racial background than anything else. The solution to a system of inequality is to not reverse it, but equal it out, if not, all you've done is kept the very same system in place with a fresh coat of propagan-tacular paint.

Let me tell you what gets me so upset about the whole Keaton Jones story... I have an autistic son who has been bullied endlessly. He’s been bullied at our neighborhood playground, he was attacked at an event, he’s been bullied by his peers and he’s been bullied at school. He’s come home crying. He’s come home begging me not to send him back and, instead of grabbing my phone so I could film his pain, I held him close to me and taught him ways to cope. Now, he sees Keaton getting all these celebrities inviting him to premiers and sending their love and he’s wondering, why not him. So here I am now, having to explain that very thing. I have to explain that because I chose not to broadcast his pain, not to setup a go fund me, etc. that his experience with bullying won’t get him that same attention. I’m not saying she was necessarily wrong in doing what she did but, we all have to remember that his is one of thousands of identical stories there are to be told and every one of them deserves to be heard.

I was bullied in school so i set out on a campaign to prove that my parents and I were rich. It actually sorta worked and I did't get bothered too much after that. Only problem was that i had to keep that facade up, so I had to do well in school to get into a nice university. It worked, I went to CU on scholarship, then I went to law school on scholarship. Im in my second year of law school and I'm not sure where the facade ended, my luck kicked in, or if i actually got this far based on my merits, and i was rich of motivation from within the whole time. Either way, law school is fking hard and I'm pretty sure I just bombed on contracts final. ...i guess the moral of the story is, if you lie to other kids to stop getting bullied, you might end up in law school?

I was a massive bully growing up and that's partially because I was being abused at home, I'll never forgive myself for the people that I hurt but I think it's so important to say that bullies never pick on you for you, it's completely about them and trying to alleviate their pain. That doesn't make it okay at all, but just know it has nothing to do with you if you're being bullied.

Jade Hunt That's interesting. I always understood the people who bullied me because our personalities clashed, but I never understood the people who had no reason to go out of their way to hurt me. Like we never had a full conversation until they suddenly started harassing me and when anyone asked why, they'd honestly just shrug and continue. We didn't have any of the same classes but they'd catch me in the corridors and lash out at me then. I never found out why. Guess it was just their problem.

The problem is, in the United States, the recidivism rate (rate at which criminals return to jail) is so high that at this point, jail time only punishes people and doesn’t rehabilitate. I definitely think that the sentence should’ve been higher and required more jail time but the judge has the right idea about what to do afterwards when she is released. But I don’t agree with how the judge dismissed the crimes for their ages though.

Right , which is how I think it should be viewed, acts that don't have anything to with skin color, but I guess my qualm is the way DeFranco is using it here. Honestly, the Keaton Jones make me angry. According to the video, Keaton was being bullied. I'm guessing he was being bullied constantly and his mother decided to make a video of her son pleading for bullies to answer the dying question: "Why?". I hope the mother went to the school board or at least the school before posting the video (and (maybe) hoping it'll go viral). What annoys me the most is the GoFundMe. I was born with a half developed hand. I've been teased since elementary school. In elementary school it was about my hand, middle school it was my weight (I was called "Piggy" from 6-8th grade) and hand, and in highschool I currently do not get bullied but I do get odd looks. But never once have a I started a GoFundMe or asked for money. You know what someone could do with that money from the GoFundMe? I could have buy a prosthetic hand or get superb treatment for my Lupus. What's the GoFundMe going toward? Paying off the bullies? Gifts for Keaton? In conclusion, fuck bullies. Everyone including Keaton deserves the chance to never experience bullying! Also, I hope all the money donated goes to a great place! Happy Holidays! Merry Christmas! Happy New Years!

Sorry to sound so black pilled, but bullying is kind of part of life, whether it’s in school or at work, etc. I’m not saying bullying is okay; there are many bad things that are part of life. But doing what we can to prevent bullying is the best way to combat it. I guess what I’m saying is...you can’t just completely stamp out bullying. But you can fight against it.
@andrewthornquist81867 жыл бұрын
To those who doubt bullying has its roots at home: I was a cruel bully from 7th to 10th grade, and my bullying most certainly found its roots at home. I was too immature to realize that, in order to feel better about myself, I should have built myself up rather than tear others down. Thankfully, my circumstances changed, my emotional wounds began to heal, and my bullying ceased. Moreover, I asked for forgiveness from my three primary victims. Recognizing the pain bullies feel by no means excuses their behavior; rather, it lends us the opportunity to 1) not take their abuse personally and 2) perhaps help them through their pain, which may put an end to their bullying.
@maliketh13697 жыл бұрын
Andrew Thornquist I used to be bullied back then. Amazing how I was able to befriend one of the bullies and he managed to stop the others. The bullies and I became neutural, they didn't mess with me and I didn't mess with them. If we needed help from one another we helped. Haven't seen them since 7th grade but it all became better.

@andrewthornquist81867 жыл бұрын
It's ignorant and smallminded to think that we can't hold someone accountable while empathizing with their life circumstances. I was and am 100% responsible for my bullying--and I was also put in a crappy situation which contributed to my issues. No excuses are being made.
@Vauksel7 жыл бұрын
Sure we can, but why should we? You're not deserving of empathy because others who were in similar situations did not take the same route you did, proving that despite you being influenced negatively your behavior was ultimately your own choice. I know from firsthand experience that home abuse does not cause a child to become a bully, and that kids with better home lives can still become bullies. Again, if you were concerned with making amends and not painting yourself as a victim you wouldn't be bothered so much that a random stranger doesn't buy your bullshit. Poor you, let's all feel sorry for the bully, c'mon mate get real.
@andrewthornquist81867 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I have already made amends and have no need to make more. The purpose of my posting is solely to share a perspective. I realize that the internet's modus operandi is to assume the worst of people, so it comes as no surprise that your assumptions about my intentions are inaccurate. Secondly, you don't have to empathize with anyone, ever, if you choose not to. Who is forcing you to? Lastly, there is absolutely no situation or upbringing wherein everybody responds the same; to argue that we shouldn't empathize with someone because they responded to a situation differently than others is to essentially argue we shouldn't empathize with anyone at all. This is my last response. Be blessed, Goldfish.

bullying sucks, sadly I was really mean to other kids, made fun of them, bullied them. but it was because I had a shitty childhood and it made me hate the world. I feel bad for this little boy, it is a vicious cycle, but also try to realize that most likely the bully in this situation has some kind of abuse in his life that makes him act this way. It really comes down to the parents in these situations, if your kid is bullying people, you need to find out why, and change whatever it is that is making your child so mad

It's a problem with the American prison system that it only focuses on punishment and not on rehabilitation. In most other western countries if you go to prison you get help and counsling, so you can expect a person to come out of prison a better person not a worse one.

Yes, and my point is that eventually they will be released and then I would hope they have understood that what they did was wrong and never do it again. Which is why I think rehabilitation is important because these people that did those horrible things will eventually be someone's neighbours again. The judge did not give a prison sentence to Brittany Covington because he thought prison would make her an even worse person than before and that is a problem with the American prison system.

Simple solution to bullying: "Stop the schools from punishing kids that stand up for themselves and fight back." -Dakota Taylor. As someone who was Bullied through middle school. I know what its like. Of course everyone has different bullies so nobody experiences bullying the same, but i get it. I was near the bottom of the pecking order in middle school. That all changed in high school when i did something (im not proud of) that resulted in all the kids of my highschool fearing me. And nobody bullied me ever again. I was left alone. Which yeah, looking back on it, i think was the best alternitive. But it also prevented me from makeing friends in highschool. Not that I had any in middle or elementary, but the door was closed. Once people feared me they would no longer talk to me. But this included bullies. The schools did not stop bullies. Bullies did not stop bullies. Fear stops bullies. At least it did in my case. And i suffered heavy consequences for my actions. But i would rather be feared than bullied. And that is the advise I would pass on to anyone in that position. Stand up for yourself. Fight back. Use Violence to stop violence. If thats the solution adults use then you should too. Dont rely on adults for help. They will always let you down, and make things worse. Stand up, let the hate flow through you, and fight.
@puredemon63497 жыл бұрын
hey it is not financially feasible to move every time your child is bullied. New flash: Bullies are everywhere because Bullying has little to no consequences. Nothing says "Stop Bullying" like a broken nose or a few lost baby teeth. No permanent damage done (Especially not by the hands of puny children muscles) but a valuable life lesson is taught.
@puredemon63497 жыл бұрын
hey yes. Bully the bully into submission. Violence is the only solution for violence. I didnt need to physically bully my bullies. I did something so horrendously terrible that no one ever bullied me again. I speak from experience when I say Fear is the only way to stop bullying. Fear of actual consequences that children can understand. Children do not understand being suspended. To them it is like a vacation. Children do not understand being grounded. Yeah it sucks bit it is not a deterent. Pain is the natural deterent of life. Children fear Pain. Im not saying adults should inflict pain on children. Im saying children should not be punished for defending themselves. In elementary school I got into 2 fights. In first grade I was bullyed By a group of 3rd graders. So I tackled one and Bit a chunk out of his leg. I got detention for a week. And was nearly expelled. But that bully and his friends stayed the hell away from me from that day on. In 2nd grade while on the school bus a 4th grader (not the same people as before) was bullying some kindergartners, So I stood up for them. I said "Hey, Leave them alone." And he directed his attention to me. He began to to bully me. Pokeing me calling me shrimp. So I bit his finger. As he winced in pain, I threw him to the ground and punched him. I was kicked off the bus for the rest of the year. But the kindergartners thanked me. And that bully never so much as looked at me again. Violence solves all problems.
@puredemon63497 жыл бұрын
hey for the record it wasnt a Big chunck. I was a first grader. I had a small mouth. But ypur missing the point. These kids were bullying me. Calling me names. Pushing me to the ground. Until i wouldnt be pushed around anymore. You call me a bully yet i only ever hurt those that bullyed others. Never did i hurt the weak or those that couldnt defend themselves. I only hurt those that chose to bully. That chose to hurt others.
@PercussusResurgo7 жыл бұрын
PurE DemOn Pure DemOn Makes some very good points. I don't agree 100% because every situation is different but I totally understand where he is coming from. I grew up in a tough neighbourhood in Europe. Despite being a very intelligent kid, living in a low income neighbourhood for the first 17 years of my life, I also needed to be street smart enough to know that a physical response to a real threat of violence was sometimes the only realistic option. I say sometimes because violence is never my first choice. I would rather talk my way out if trouble if I could It. Violence is never fun to a sane person. Frankly it is very frightening and I am honest enough to admit that it usually has an emotional and/or physical impact on me regardless of the outcome. However I would rather live with that that mental scar than live with the knowledge that I allowed myself to be beaten or victimized and regret that I did not do my absolute best to counter the threat. Don't get me wrong, I am not stupid, if a guy has a knife or a gun and wants my wallet, he can usually have it. That said I have also looked down the barrel of a gun and told the guy to fuck off and leave me alone. It's a mind game and you play it as you see it. That time it worked. The reality is that males have an unwritten code or hierarchy of dominance and counter threat which instinctively determines our behaviour at certain times. Even good guys have to have this instinct or the few bad and crazy guys we all have in our communities will do a lot more harm than they already do. I cannot take on a whole street gang but in rough neighbourhoods that I have lived in I have looked some of them in straight in the eye to let them know that if they come after me they will not have an easy target. 9/10 that is enough for them to get the message and they left me alone. Truthfully I was scared stiff but it worked. The scariest opponents are gang members and low-life's. They scare me because they have nothing to lose and a reputation for violence to uphold. That said if I think for a second they might use a weapon or physical violence on me or others I am going to hit them fast and hard. There is nothing that stops an attacker quicker than the sight of their own blood, the pain of a busted nose or one of their biggest bullies being stood up to. I had do this with a group of skinheads who were genuine white nationalist and fascists thugs back in the 1980s who had attacked and raped some female students and even burnt out the rooms of foreign students. They were running around like jackals for weeks until I head butted one of them for groping a girl in our main student bar. This was a very long time ago but my bad boy image quickly changed to be a local hero because these thuggish Nazi sympathizers started to show me some respect whenever they saw me and they caused a lot less trouble on our campus. More importantly it made them realized that some of the students would fight back and the came around less often. Luckily I can usually talk my way out of trouble but that only works if the people you are having conflict with are basically sane and reasonable. That is seldom the case but sometimes you get lucky. Even then they need to know that while you are willing to walk away the aggressor has to get strong sense that you are also willing not to walk away, unless they back down. As PurE demOn says fear is a great motivator that you can use to turn things in your favour. When needed I have taken that fear and disguised it as bravery. This bravado has allowed me save myself and many, many other people in many different countries that I have lived in and travelled over the last 3-4 decades. Despite being a white collar worker about every 3-5 years or so Outside of my precessional world I have had to fight people who had seriously presented a threat to me or other innocent people around me who I could see where in big trouble When you grow up in a tough town you develop an instinct to challenge immediate or future threats. Sometimes you have to do so very early and direct manner so that the bullies start to fear for themselves or their reputations and are willing to stand down. I am not a soldier nor did I want to be one but life has conditioned me to selectively take action or at least present a realistic counter threat in what I perceived to be dangerous situations. I am not superman nor am I that big a guy so sometimes my counter threat was a realistic bluff that paid more often than not and then no one gets hurt. You learn to read the situation and decide if you can make the bullies or potential attackers fear the consequences of someone brave (or maybe stupid enough) to fight back. Let me put it the other way, the one major time I ignored my instincts and my friends and I got badly beaten up as a result. I was a teenager in a distant city for a sports competition. One evening syptunned an ice rink we visited, I misread the threat from local youths that was developing around us. In the end we got pummelled by ice skates, fists and boots by much older guys who knew how to skate and we did not. It was a bloody mess and I learned a a valuable lesson. Now I trust my instincts every time. That said I prefer to live in a place where people are generally peaceful and respectful. That is one reason why I now live in Canada where the threat of violence to me or my family is very low most if the time. I like it that way. However for anyone reading who things all violence is bad remember we have all heard of some innocent girl getting attacked or raped and no one went to help. That sickens me. That would not happen if I was around. I would help and I would not think twice, unless it put my own children or family at immediate risk. Other than that I would act fast and decisively with no questions asked. I have done so in supimilar circumstances where other bigger and stronger people stood aside doing nothing. Judge me if you want but people like me and PurE DemOn would be the good Samaritans you would hope are nearby if you or someone you love is getting attacked. I would help when others would be running away because I would rather die fighting trying to do the right thing to protect myself and other innocent people rather than be slaughtered because of fear. I don't recommend it for everyone but a I suggest is don't be a coward because while you might live longer you will die with regrets and remorse.
