Hi ladies! Thanks for that trip down memory lane! ❤️ Madonna had just completed the Virgin Tour in June of that year. It was a North American tour and was sold out. When she did Live Aid on July 13, 1985, she performed in front of 100,000 people and her first televised global audience. The performance rocketed her career and she proved that she could stand on her own with the likes of Tina Turner, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Phil Collins and Hall & Oats. True Blue was released the next year and went on to sell over 25 million copies. What I admire about her the most is that she truly enjoys being on stage. She is always smiling through the grueling routines. ❤️

She’s of course at her best element here-the live stage. Doing cardio and singing (no lip synch or auto tune). This, before a live audience of over 100,000 and a global tv audience estimated at 1.9billion viewers. She was dressed from neck to toes in 95 degree summer heat…and the banter that followed after the Holiday number was memorable- Madonna (M): So, hot enough for you? I’m sympathizing with you by keeping my coat on. So don’t feel bad!! Crowd yelling: Take it off!! Take it off!! M: I ain’t taking off shit today!! You might hold it against me 10 years from now!! The backdrop to this exchange was a few days before this performance, Playboy and Penthouse published nude photos of pre-fame Madonna taken sometime 1977-1979 when she was a struggling dancer and she posed as a figure model in art and photography sessions to supplement her income. She also worked as a coat hanger in a fancy NYC resto and as a waitress at a Dunkin’Donuts shop. She didn’t turn to prostitution or night club strip dancing. These photographers made her sign a “consent release form” for her modeling job and paid her a small fee. After she became famous after her first 2 albums and successful Virgin Tour earlier in 1985, three of these photographers sold her photos to Playboy and Penthouse-all these parties making hundreds of thousands of $ off these photos. Critics and detractors were “slut shaming” Madonna for these nude photos, but she dismissed it: “I am not ashamed of anything..” She’s of course, a liberated, rebellious feminist who’s comfortable in her own body and sexuality…and controversies like these will not faze nor define her as a person and an artist. To prove her point, by 1992 she would publish her “Sex” coffee book and release her Erotica album. That’s why she’s iconic and legendary. Before you leave this Like A Virgin (LAV) era, you need to see her perform LAV as opening number for the inaugural MTV Video Music Awards in September 14, 1984 that stunned the pop music world and culture. LAV as a single, music video and album has not been released yet when she performed it on MTV. Her manager then told her after this performance that her career “is over”. It turned out to be a defining and iconic moment in pop music history. Really enjoying your Madonna reactions and journey.

At the time the organisers of live aid did not want Madonna to perform has they thought she was not talented enough and she was just a passing phase. It was Dick Clarke who hosted the live aid telecast who pleaded with the organisers to put this women on stating that she is the biggest female artist at this point in time have just released material girl. After this performance crazy for you knocked we are the world of live aid off the top from the billboard hot 100 and that she will have a very long and successful career.

LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND eventually made it onto the True Blue Album which hadn’t yet been released. It was never a single. Also, the “Hot enough for you? I’m sympathizing with you by keeping my coat on. Yeah, I’m not taking sh!t off, you might hold it against me 10 years from now” was a direct response for the scandal that had just exploded when Playboy and Penthouse published pre-fame nude pictures of her from years earlier when she did some nude modeling during a 70’s art class.

She certainly knows how to give a great response! 😉

Besides this just being an incredible performance, to think this was just two short years after her first album was released and she was performing with all these long established acts and in front of 1+ Million people, was quite a feat in a time of no internet. After being a fan for 40yrs it’s still mind blowing to think about that young dancer that went to New York with the dream to dance. Lol Note: This performance got her on the cover of People magazine with the likes of Tina Tuner, Bob Dillon, The Rolling Stones & Hall and Oats. She actually had four People magazine covers in 85’ alone, not to mention the coveted Time magazine cover.

At this moment in time, Playboy and Penthouse had just published old photos of her from her early days in NYC when she worked as a nude artist's model. Hence her quip about "holding it against her in 10 years" if she took her jacket off. Bette Midler (who, at the time, was still known for her bawdy humor) had already introduced her as "a girl who pulled herself up by her bra straps...and is known to let them down occasionally...") But all that said, definitely one of my favorite Madonna outfits of the 80s.

In a way, this performance was Madonna’s clap back for not being invited to contribute to We are the world, which was released earlier that year. For something very different, I recommend watching Promise to try from Madonna’s Truth or Dare movie. There are two versions, the original one with dialogue is my favourite. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJ-miZqQr9Jqmassi=11rYYvNginPiOEH9

I heard she wasnt welcome into this festival. People said she cant sing, cant dance...and probably uncomfortable with her atitude... --- Still... she fought back gaving her best to this huge crowd --- I love her ❤💪🏻 LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND...I GUESS ...IS FROM TRUE BLUE ALBUM.

I don’t leave comments very often, but I just have to say I love your Madonna reactions soooo much! There are lots of reactors on KZbin who have little to no interest in her music and only react to her for views, but I can feel your sincerity & genuine respect for her as an artist & performer. I’m super excited for your Madonna journey & cannot wait for you to experience her 90s, 00s & 2010s music, which is criminally underrated! I also think it’s better that you’ll be seeing her live next year because by then, you will be much more familiar with her discography and the built-up hype will reward you tenfold! Looking forward to the next one! 😁

To those of us who were fortunate enough to watch Live Aid live back then it will always remain an unforgettable event. Literally EVERYBODY was talking about it. Apparently, "Love Makes the World Go Round" was Madonna's response to her not being invited to be on "We Are the World". According to Nile Rodgers the reason for that was that the song's producers felt that she couldn't sing (can you imagine?!), which hurt her quite a bit. By the way, I really think the tambourine is a lost art form in pop music. 😉
@OurAnxiousReactions Жыл бұрын
It was definitely the event of the time! And completely agree about the tambourine! :)

Only the first two songs made the final cut for the Live Aid dvd, released in the 2000s, when all the stars performances where remastered, I think that’s the reason of the lack of quality of Love makes the world go round youtube video. Btw, the song was included in the True Blue album, the next year (1986), but it was never a single.

One of her magnificent and legendary performances is Keep it Together from her 1990 Blond Ambition Tour. Do watch it sometime to see her mastery of staging, dance and overall performance. But, don't cheat yourself by watching the Truth or Dare movie version as it is not the full complete number, and edited down for the movie itself. A lot of reaction seem to review off the movie version and they're not getting the entire song and meaning of what the song represents. Look for the actual live performance version either from the final show in Nice, France or the Yokohama, Japan show at the start of the tour. Watch both. 👍

Love Makes The World Go Round was never a single. It was a brand new song at the time and ended up on her 1986 True Blue album as the album closer. This was about a year ahead of its release, so she must have probably just written it, possibly as the first track of that third album.

I was there it was incredible it was also a 1000° very very hot Madonna is wearing a jacket because I think penthouse or playboy put out madonna's nude when she was young and modeling in New York. Just to embarrass her. So Doreen the whole performance people cap screaming take off the jacket and if you listen she's actually responds to the audience and says I'm not taken off anything. Anyway the concert was incredible but like I said it was scorching hot and unbearable we found out later that JFK stadium was unsafe and should have been condemned . I can't remember how much I spent for tickets though but we were there like all day long
