I will give my perspective as a new player. I started playing just a few months ago, and I agree with you partially - Yes there is allot to take in and you easy get overwhelmed if you think about all the tings you can do and collect. But what I focused on was just to take in the world and the story. I tried to explore the world and not only speedrun the quests. I red them and and tried to take in the story. And that made my experience much better and more fun! I have tried to be social and interacted with players along the way, and I have already made a new friend that is from my home nation. I understand if this is not the typical new player (or im wrong and im very typical). But for how i played and tried to enjoy the game, I never felt overwhelmed! Thanks for a good video and a interesting perspective :)

I came across a podcast the other day that was all about how to get better at healing in WoW. The number one tip was to spend your time/effort on improving your UI (Addons, type of information, weakaura, placement etc...) rather than playing the game. That was a stark reminder of the barriers that prevent me from returning to retail.
@qunt100
@qunt100 Ай бұрын
I think there are other things to. Like I hate having to heal through stupid. Or in leveling dungeons and end game content at times, it's just a go go go speed fest. Heal us all while we tank and dps the entire dungeon, and pull the whole dungeon with every mob at once, in one shot. It's bullshit lol. I never will heal or tank in this game again. Like even dps sucks sometimes because I can't even get spells off at times on mobs and bosses in a 5 man dungeon run or whatever. Like how can groups clear shit so quickly. The methodical learner mentality for any type of information, whether it is in wow, or in real life knowledge of importance and all that. The methodical learner approach is completely dead. Go fast or get fucked. And go forward with shit regardless of whether you agree with it or not or get fucked. Like I legit don't even have drive to even go to work or exist anymore half the time. Although wow is still pretty fun. It is just a different game. And I play so rapidly differently compared to how other people play. I think the only addon I use is silver dragon and camel tracker. Still trying to find camel figurines in uldum.

@AaaBbb-pl8jc
@AaaBbb-pl8jc Ай бұрын
I never got into healing precisely for that reason, I don't want to have to download a bunch of addons and configure them and do all that to be able to do my class decently. That's why I enjoy SOD, I haven't healed a raid before until SOD and I'm getting by with just the default UI (well, and deadly boss mods of course). Never used a weakaura in my life, and I don't plan to lol

@bondori7999 Ай бұрын
I mean, ultimately, addons are an alternative to skill. If you want to do a thing, but not have to put the effort in to watching the information on your screen and/or getting better, get an addon. But the game is 100% playable with zero addons, so please don't blame them for you not playing.

Narratively it’s really disengaging, too. The whole BFA expansion I was making jokes that the Heart of Azeroth would just get replaced by some random green we found questing. @l337hackzor
@l337hackzor Ай бұрын
@@fremenlemon655 It's all about attitude, "not my idea of fun to grind for things that get replaced every few months" is the wrong attitude for wow. The more healthy way to look at it is achievements or rating. Setting goals (not gear based ones) and working forwards them is fulfilling. Don't grind a dungeon over and over to get a drop, push it higher and higher for rating. I understand you are doing the same thing, running a dungeon, but it's the mental aspect that is different. If you don't enjoy the gameplay (doing the dungeon for example) than no amount of virtual gear will fix that. This will often lead to more seasonal sytle of play though.

My Experience as a new WOW player. I started playing with DF, a week before launch. WOW has always piqued my interest but was never able to play it until now. I have had a lot of fun. I play solo, been in a guild since day 1 but don't interact with them a lot. Keybinding took me a good while to figure out, and even longer to find a way to organize my UI in a way I felt comfortable. Talent tree was challenging, I play as a Dratchyr and I went from having a handful of abilities in the Forbidden Reach to a whole talent tree by the time I got to Ogrimar. It took me almost a whole year to realize there are rotations and that the order I use my abilities will affect how much damage I do (learned this when I got kicked out of a raid for not doing enough damage). LUST and Interrupt were another obstacle I faced, people kept screaming for me to LUST but I had no ability called LUST, it took a very helpful person to explain to me that "Fury of the Aspects" and any other ability like it is called LUST or HERO because they were the first of their kind. The story was a bit of a mess at first. I had just witnessed Raszageth escape and suddenly Im standing in frozen wasteland with the sky shattered above me, I was shown a cinematic and I had no idea who Bolvar or Sylvanas were or what they had to do with Raszageth. It has taken me 1 year and a half to get caught up with the lore. I'm all caught up with DF and fully finished Shadowlands. I think there should be NPCs that guide you through things like Keybinding and Talent Tree, also add a Lorewalker to each main city and let them tell you the story of Azeroth, from the age of the old gods to current events, make it easy for players to catch up, Im so thankful for Nobbel87 and PlatinumWOW. But the main thing that needs to change is veteran players attitude towards new players, have some patience, don't just kick someone because they don't know how to use certain ability or do a mechanic perfectly in their first try.

As someone who generally doesn't like for games to be focused on the casual audience, I completely agree that the mmo genre is one that needs to be. Forcing people into raids for cool unlocks or any major progression just feels awful to me. I just don't care about joining a big guild or having to adhere to raid times or being stuck in there for hours at a time. That makes the game not fun to me. I want to play how I like and feel like I can meaningfully progress. Things like the FOMO raid achievement mounts suck, and so many people just buy runs and make the achievement significantly less meaningful anyway. Maybe a good way to solve this issue would be to somehow separate raid gear from the rest of the game. Make a raid only gear progression system so those people can sweat as hard as they want in that content and it could carry over from raid to raid.

Thank you so much for this. I have been raiding in WoW for 20 years now and totally agree with you on all parts. I haven't quit, but you are spot on about how it is geared way too heavily toward the high-end players (who, in my view, leave as soon as they quickly "win," leaving the rest of us in frustration). I would miss my Alt add-on, but I would willingly give it up to get back to basic, fun gameplay without add-ons.

As a healer main I’ve never used any dispel addons or weak auras or healer specific unit frames because it takes the joy of having to figure out what to do and who to heal which to me is the fun part of healing. I agree. Even from a hardcore perspective just recently getting CE with priest ive really cut back on weakauras and addons. Weakauras especially are out of control. You "need" some like super mega pack and macros that cause your PC to start sounding like a plane take off just to kill a boss. Its a bit much lol, Cleaner screen the better. Only gripe is healing naturally has more screen clutter- frames taking up visibility- dying from Smolderon waves coming from under those frames :(. I find it a huge failure in design that rotations to even optimize take weakauras because they dont supply any useful ui elements for your rotation. Whirlwind stacks for fury, Kyrian Spark on arcane... Even your tier set effects. Like... too much

Back when I used to play (quit like 4 days into DF) my issue with natural healing was how hideous the default UIs are and how many abilities some specs needed because keybinds. I used mouse over macros for ages which helped but eventually switched to healing frames. I think things need to be redesigned and decluttered to heal naturally in high end content.

I stopped raiding but the game always held a soft spot in my heart. I've looked at some of the content wondering if I should come back. It looks fun, and I miss the comradery of raiding with 24 other people just messing around and joking. I just don't have the energy or time to dedicate to full time raiding, or learning all of the crazy stuff added to the game. There's also near 10 years of missed content that I won't be able to experience fully. In the end I just can't go back into the game despite yearning for it.

i only just started last year, and while i enjoyed the new content, its hard to get into as a whole. You start, then play BFA, then right at the end you're high enough level to enter shadowlands, then about 2/3rds through shadowlands you are whisked into dragonflight. The only expac i got to play start to finish was dragonflight, and then i was doing endgame mythic dungeons and raiding. I barely know any characters or plot points outside dragonflight, and yet the entire story of it seems to be callbacks to earlier events... Its a fun game but having not grown up with it, i missed about 99% of the story and content that made this game so iconic, one second im in the starting hub with goblins and then the next im in shadowlands as a recognized hero by jaina and a bunch of characters i never even met before that are super integral to the plot. It's like they don't care about the experience of new or returning players, and only cater to those who never missed an update, which as time passes is an increasingly small number of people!

This was what happened to me. My youngest kid was out of high school, and I thought I would start the game back up and go hard on it. There were so many buttons that I couldn't even keep up without buying a MMO mouse. I couldn't even equip a new piece of raid gear without downloading a simulator addon to determine whether the gear was actually an upgrade given my covenants and gear stats. I love playing alts, but the amount of grinding required to level a covenant was just too time consuming. A couple of months into the Maw, I asked myself why I was torturing myself like that. The game literally felt like it was designed to punish players.

I have had similar experiences. I’m a vanilla vet, started in March 2005 and did the on-and-off all the way through BFA. What began as a fun game to play with the guys (and occasional gal) become a college hobby. When I started a family and full time job, however, I became that “aging audience” and quickly tired of the elitism and toxic competitiveness even in regular non-endgame dungeons. Trying to relax after work turned into completing digital chores and managing other people’s bad attitudes. I briefly came back to dragonflight because a friend wanted me to play, and I saw that things were worse than ever. Crafting no longer made sense, and I was actually punished by the game mechanics for farming and saving materials at a low level to try and do well. Instance groups give an instant boot if players are not pro-level speed runners with academic knowledge of even basic dragonflight dungeons. Saying “I’m just back from a long hiatus” is the number one way to get kicked, it turns out. Saying I’m visually impaired and please don’t go so fast, sadly, seems to be number two. It’s a mistake to think Zack’s comments are limited to wow, though, as ESO and GW2 have the same issues. (GW2 is admittedly more relaxed, but not when you get to raids and fractals. Toxic AF.) People in general seem to have forgotten that games (1) are just games, and (2) are supposed to be enjoyable pastimes/hobbies.

Get to max level which takes 2-4 days depending on free time, have your friend run you through a bunch of dungeons, and then you're good to go. None of the reputations matter, and everything in terms of crafting can be gotten from other people. You just need to level, farm for what scant materials you need, and play with your friend.

I STARTED PLAYING WOW DURING CATA - here is my take. When I started playing WoW Cata was a fresh breath of air. The only other MMO I have played up until this point was RuneScape. I was so addicted to WoW once I finally made the decision to play it. I played consistently all the way through until the first season of WoD. I then went to college and quit the game entirely. I got sick of it, it felt like a chore. Recently, (November 2023) I came back to Dragon Flight Season 3. I'm mainly a PvP player so I've been grinding retail PvP. I've managed to hit 2400 in solo shuffle this season and 2200 in 3s, and 2300 in 2s. It's been a ton of fun, but my GOD THE LEARNING CURVE WAS INSANE. I've been lucky to have a very slow period at my job the past few months so I've been able to play an ungodly amount of WoW (and video games in general). Normally I would never be able to do this, but I was. So I was able to get addicted to it again. But if I didn't have this free time there is no fucking way in hell I would achieve the success I found. I also managed to hit 3500 io in M+ and HAVE NEVER PVE'D BEFORE IN MY LIFE UNTIL DFS3. But again, the amount of addons and other bullshit I needed to get here is insane. The barrier to entry would not have been overcome by me again if I didn't have a ton of prior hours in this game. This game is NOT friendly to new players, and it is EXTREMELY bloated. I love it very much and I don't want it to die, but as soon as my work picks up again, I'll fall off. As will every other player that has a life outside of WoW. And it sucks honestly. The game is great, the current state of the game is not. It's over designed and under optimized. I hope blizzard makes good decisions moving forward and helps keep the game we all love alive. Sincerely, a WoW player since childhood. Thanks :)

Even trying to come back to retail is rough. I played Legion and BlizzCon this year got me all hyped up to get back into the game. The catch-back-up mechanism (chromy) does a really poor job of getting you into the story, the mechanics are so different and there's so much that I can hardly believe that any new or returning players stick with it. SoD seemed promising for a bit. I enjoyed phase 1 a lot. But come phase 2 it's like the sweats have emerged from their caves. Want to get to 40? Better be ready to dungeon spam and grind for 3 days then do all the quests you skipped to farm gold! That shook me off before hitting level 30. Oh well, I wanted to finish Elden Ring anyways. Just wanted to give my 2 cents as someone who loved the game since 2004

Yes you are absolutely right on every single point. I am 19 year old student from Serbia. Plunderstorm is a great game mode but when i tell my friends to play with me and they realize they have to pay a sub they are immediately turned off. It's a huge problem for people outside the west for this game to be appealing because of that sub. I personally think free trial that they already have should be extended much more. Addons are an absolute bloat, it takes so long to set up everything just to get declined because of AOTC. Season 3 is a prime example,i've taken a break from the game,came very late into the season but i couldn't for the longest time get into Heroic because of before mentioned AOTC. I have been playing retail for a year and i know that this sounds unbelievable,but i still can't find an active guild that's just willing to do leveling or some chill content in general. Don't get me wrong,i like endgame content,i got Keystone master in Season 2 and 3 on Preservation Evoker,i play arenas from time to time aswell. But raids are being so gatekept that its damn near impossible to get into a HC if you haven't played every week from season start. I really like some of the points people made here and I just wanted to highlight what would be a good fix (similar ff14 approach): 1) no addons period, this includes combat log data for wcl purposes. 2) game ui allows more customization to move bars, move ui elements, etc. to add customization. 3) the game will recognize your performance based on all factors (not just dps, like doing mechanics) and give you a grade for your performance so you know how you did and only you can see. Could implement a reward system for good performance but this is delicate as it could lead to gatekeeping

You will probably never see this message, but I would like to say your take is 100% accurate for me. I am one of those "would-be new players" that feels deterred by the game's current state. There was a time not too long ago where I was interested in checking out WoW, but after I looked into it I realized it would take a HUGE time investment to be at all decent at the game. I would have spend hours researching the past content to know how things got to where they are in the game currently so I'm up to speed, spend time researching what addons are needed and why, spend time downloading and setting up those addons, spend time to look into what content I should be setting as my goals throughout my progression, spend time learning the meta, and then after all that comes the time investment to actually get my character endgame. Also, lets be real, I would also have to either find a group/guild willing to take me in under their wing, or never get anywhere. I've played MMOs before, so I am not afraid of the grind, the learning curve for raids, or even farming gear, but tacking on all of this other mess just makes the game feel not worth it to me. It would take WAY too much to get to the point where I actually get to be relevant with my character so I can enjoy beating content as a contributing party member.

With all due respect most of this is just wrong when it comes to dragonflight. I understand the complaints about addons they are rlly annoying to set up the first time and it's stupid that you need them to enjoy the harder content of the game. But on your other complaints, 1. There is no reason whatsoever to research past content unless ur rlly interested in lore. You simply hop into endgame content and there are two grinds (raid and mythic+) 2. The meta doesn't matter at all until you get to super high end keys and it completely shifts every season so just play what you think looks cool and by the time you are good at it there is a good chance it will be in the meta (except ww monk god forbid) 3. WoW is probably the fastest mmo to get to endgame content besides maybe GW2. This might be a problem you just have with mmos but it is not unique to wow. 4. I have thouroughly enjoyed these last few seasons and got the main achievements people shoot for almost fully through public lobbies. Although of course its nice to make friends along the way. I would say it takes around a week to get end game on ur first character and then depending on if you boost or not it takes like a couple hours - a couple days for any alts.

I am getting some useful gear now, but I'll also be getting gear at 50 and at 60 from those factions. There is something HUGE about knowing you're working towards building a future for your character. Progression that doesn't just evaporate. Really good points, agree wholesale. Especially the minmaxing and addon over-saturation genuinely ruining the game in the long run. I played Season of Discovery up to level 25 with no addons and it was the most fun I’ve had in wow since Legion. Also the amount of comments here pointing out the glow/camera is hilarious and original and we definitely need more of them as I’m sure you’re the first person who noticed it

I played classic wow with my wife for almost a year straight. My wife and I have never played mouse and keyboard, and there’s a specific mod called consoleport that lets you use a controller to play World of Warcraft. It was the only on we used, but for people like me, I couldn’t play the game without it.

As someone who bounces from mouse and keyboard to xbox controller on my pc, i cant for the life of me understand how anyone could ever play wow with a controller and actually be able to fully utilize your class. I tried Balders Gate 3 with controller and the UI was so terrible to navigate compared to mouse and keyboard ui, i couldnt play with it for more than an hour before i had to switch back. Addon or no, not for me lol , but glad it worked for yall

@@endgamerlvl1that's because you can use both (let's be honest you probably barely use control), someone that's been using one device their whole life will not want to use another or they simply do not like Mnk.

@@endgamerlvl1 the right stick essentially acts as the mouse, and the left stick acts as your WASD movement. If you’re familiar with how Final Fantasy 14 let’s players use their controller, wow is very similar with the add on. Each ability is mapped to a different button, and then pressing L2, or R2 takes you to a different screen with more abilities. Pressing in on the right stick acts as a right click, pressing in on the left stick acts as a left click. It’s a little jank, but it was still easier for me to use than figure out MNK.

This hit the nail on the head. I never really got into WoW. I played every other MMO but this one. I recently thought about playing it, but as a new player it just feels like there’s too much going on. Especially with the addons and such. Normally I just say forget it and I’ll go play something familiar or try out something else instead.

I think games like Elder Scrolls Online and Guild Wars 2 have been good examples of gear not being devalued by every expansion. Sometimes gear from past expansions can be BIS for certain scenarios or give you reason to even go back and replay old content to grind out old sets.

This is so spot on for how I have felt since Legion expansion. Coming back constantly to see a friend who only started playing again in that patch, while you were BiS last patch, they already have better gear a few days in. I can not wait to try the BR, I have been loving classic due to the above issue, but I also love retail, quite conflicted. Would love to put time into retail again but as everyone and Asmon states, it really feels like you are not getting value out of the time you spend

If they opened retail servers with no boosts, no transfers, no addons and no parsing it might just tempt me back!

I used to play WoW back in the day. Vanilla, BC and WOTLK. What I loved originally about WoW, primarily during Vanilla, was the sense of a vast, explorable world with players roaming everywhere. The concept of MMO's was very new, and so it was incredible to be pioneers in that way. The map and landscape was crafted with love, the paths from province to province were exciting and immersive to explore and travel on. Running into other travellers on paths to places felt very cool and immersive. To then reach a new biome/town, explore it, its story and do some quests for some rewards before getting back on the road. With BC, it definitely was the start of the feeling I had that, that the map was more "streamlined" for "questing". The kind of questing that you don't even bother reading the text of, just hit accept, complete and want the shortest route to the next spot to do it again. It started feeling cold and calculated more than a living world, but it was new content so we were all excited. WOTLK further confirmed that "streamlining" was the route the game was taking because it's what the hardcore players wanted. They didn't want to have to travel far and explore (defeating the point in my opinion), they just wanted to get through the "questing" as fast as possible to focus on dungeons (which were way too sweaty for any normal player). As I got to the "end game" of WOTLK, I slowly began stepping away from playing entirely, as it just didn't seem like the game that originally got my attention. The questing felt soulless and like it merely existed for XP, rather than providing a living world to participate in. That's my 2 cents. More like 4 cents even. 😅
@joel345
@joel345 Ай бұрын
I think you've nailed it to be honest. I think part of the problem as well is that the idea of a vast online explorable world isn't really a novel idea anymore. When WoW came out social media wasn't really a thing and the way that you met and interacted with people online was through games like WoW. Now as WoW tries to pivot towards where the gaming industry has headed, has become almost like a hub game with everyone just sitting in cities where they queue. Unfortunately I'm not really sure what the solution to this is.

@@joel345 The brother nailed it to the coffin with his explanation! And I belive the solution is getting back to the roots of what the game once was with newer gamedev tech and refined systems. It can also be as immersive as it once was, they need world of warcraft 2 with newer graphics (which should retain old cartoonish/stylized estethics but just with newer flavour. Same with everything else...traveling, exploring, it can be raised to a such higher level, but you need game devs with heart not profit/lootbox zombies who are just interested in MONEY MONEY MONEY!!! :)

Same for me, more or less. I didn't feel the world got "smaller" during BC but I definitely did in WotLK when the only thing everybody was doing 24/7 was sitting in Dalarin in group finder and the world was empty. Second time around though (after Classic came out) I couldn't get in to BC or WotLK. In BC I made it to 70 and did 1 run of Kara before quitting back to vanilla, and when WotLK came out I didn't even make it out of the starter zone in Northrend. BC and WotLK felt soulless and dead this time around in a way they didn't back in the day, but vanilla feels perfect. It feels like my home. For me, with WoW, it's vanilla or nothing. I just don't care at all about any of the expansions. They made perfection with vanilla WoW and everything after it is a massive downgrade.

I came from games like Dark Age of Camelot into WoW on release. I played a cleric DAoC. Mobs hitting you would always interrupt casting, you could combat rez if you had the half a bar of mana it took to do so, what you did meant something. No add-ons and enough downtime between pulls to be able to interact with your party members. WoW made a lot of things much easier, but I feel that also made the experience less valuable to me. I played WoW up until BC and then lost interest as a casual player as it all got too sweaty, even back then. I agree with Asmon, get rid of parsing, get rid of add-ons and let's get back to player skill being the only measure. People will know your name if you are good and you will be more than a collection of add-ons and parse logs.

You know i play Classic (Original Classic) and I’ve thought about this about parsing a lot, I’m a 95+ average parser on multiple toons and I can tell you besides some gear I’m missing on my main my LK parse is trash because I have to do set mechanics for my mains class and in order for me to parse it I would need to piss off my RL and just go Zug mode. If parsing wasn’t a thing I wouldn’t have to see it and I would probably have more enjoyment at just doing the raid while hoping to get upgrades and once I get bis I can just play when I feel like it and not like it’s a job that I need to go every week to try and get a better parse on said boss.

I started playing again in Dragonflight. I never played retail before this point though. When I was younger since we were not at a super great off so I never had enough to pay for a sub. So I played on Private Servers. That was a looooooong time ago. So I basically forgot everything except for Silvermoon/Tristfall Wanted to start it fresh. Started a new character and was exploring. Which is what Dragonflight was supposed to of brough back. Progression, (By dragon at least.), and, Adventure. I can't get my friends to come try it because of the barrier to entry. Specifically having to buy the game and another sub since we also play FinalFantasyXIV. I know how hardcore some of the players are about numbers. I also know I don't have the amount of time to put into it to get the best gear or even raid. So. Going into it and knowing it was about being on adventure. I was fine with it. Playing solo can be a bummer sometimes. But, I also like being able to get lost in a world i heard so much about and was never able to soak it in while it was in it's prime. Can go into the older content and just imagine how epic that shit was when I was younger. Still kind of bummed I won't be able to get into raids (or at least current raids...) kinda sucks. The adventure is still nice. Very relaxing too.

Learned you could fight him whilst riding a Drake! Got the abbreviation "EOE" whispered to me by deathwing. Gathered a bunch of hotheaded compatriots who love scales as much as I do. Arrived without a key.... Godbless by sheer luck we had a godgamer with an amazing keyring under his belt, the excitement was of the charts. Proceeded to wipe for 3 hours straight, learned my rotation then and there. Finally bested the aspect of magic. Won the "Blue aspect helm" my 1st raid item ever. I continued to play with some of those guys for over 10 years. i'm still playing but those moments are gone forever.
