Yes... I know... and I agree... most people don't care about throwing their survival knife. I just happen to enjoy throwing so I do... But honestly, knife throwing can be a practical survival skill if you develop the ability to throw any knife that you have. Practicing is a bit hard on knives though, so I don't really recommend to everyone. BK2 is on my list. But my list is pretty full. Lots of great knives out there. Thanks for the comment! ~David

Good question! The biggest problem with using anything as a throwing knife is the abuse the knife takes when it doesn't stick. Secondly, little slices get taken out of throwing knife handles as they hit or are hit by other knives... So, I don't think the handle will break... it's tough... but on the Force I use for throwing, the handle is nicked up quite a bit! ~David

Yes. Unfortunately I don't make enough casholla to buy most of the knifes and pieces of gear I review... so I depend on companies to send me gear to review... I have approached them and they have not responded. I would certainly review their stuff if they wanted to send me a knife or two. I expect at some point they will... more and more companies are interested in having us review their gear. Thanks for the comment and suggestion! Maybe I'll approach them again at some point. ~David

Grind is simply the angle at which each side of the blade is cut. Most survival knives have somewhere around a 40 degree blade angle... or a 20 degree grind on each side of the blade. Hope this helps...

Wow! That is a tough question... there are pluses and minuses to just about every knife. And I have new "favorites" coming in all the time... To top my list I carry 1 or 2 knives always... either the Gerber Covert or the Schrade 1st Response. When I carry a larger knife I usually grab my Gerber LMF II ASEK. But I have a lot of knives that I have not reviewed yet that look promising.

If you can live without the butt end pommel, I like the Cold Steel SRK also. Check out my review on this channel. I also like the Schrade First Response and the Gerber Hinderer Tactical folders for a clip on all day carry knife for many situations. Both have butt end pommels and strap / cloths cutters also... These are the two knives I carry all the time. Reviews will be coming on the folders early in 2013. Hope this helps. ~ David

Excellent comment! Yes, my LMF II is showing quite a bit of wear also... I love the handle but the rubberized grips do wear quite a bit quicker. FYI... if your LMF II handle wobbles... I'd contact Gerber and see if they will replace it... worth a try. ~David

A very sharp fine blade that you maintain the edge well. Or a part serrated edge... I EDC knives like the Gerber Hinderer Tactical Combat folder... tough as nails, good steel, serrated edge for many tasks. Hope this help.

David, based on your review,I purchased the SOG Force. Am very impressed with it. Have not had to use it yet, but it stays in my ( volunteer ) fire department EDC pack. After the 2011 fires we went through in Texas, I made a pack to carry on every call. Still tweaking the contents but have got it down to what I need. Thanks for the great reviews!

Yeah. Heard about the Parang recall... contacted Gerber and got the "scoop." Gerber acted very responsibly and is replacing all Parangs... Mine is going back tomorrow. I'm almost through the Bear Grylls gear (you'll be glad to hear that) and have a lot of other non Gerber gear coming up. More stuff from SOG, some cool stuff from Old Timer and Schrade... But also have some other great, Made in the USA, Gerber gear to review also... Thanks man. ~David

Ben, I'm honored! You don't have to worry about 10 videos a day though... Man, if I could do only 2 or 3 videos a week that would be cool. We have a really packed and AWESOME line up of knife and gear reviews through the Fall and Winter but I as per your request, I have approached Scorpion Knives - the manufacturer of the Lofty Survival tool to see if they will send me a knife to review sometime this Fall. Looks like good stuff! We'll see how it goes. The ball is in their court! Thanks! ~David

Yeah... I don't know if the grip is a "problem"... it's just not great for chopping for more than a few minutes unless you don't mind horrendous blisters... This won't effect most people at all... it's just a bit of a design feature thing. I like paracord better than electrical tape though. Thanks bro! ~David

Hard for me to make the call. Depends on what you want in a knife. If you want a heftier blade point and thicker drop point blade end for survival stuff I'd go with the Force. If you want the clip point blade tip (better for piercing) for military or tactical use and really want the rasps on the blade spine, go with the Seal Team Elite. Plus the Seal Team Elite does look cooler. But I'd be a bit more concerned about the tip snapping than the SOG Force. Hope this helps. ~ David

It really depends what you want / need and how much you want to spend. For less than $40... I have not seen a better survival knife for bushcraft and general survival abuse than the Extreme Survival (see my review if you have not yet). If you want more of a tactical / military knife you will definitely want the SOG. My recommendation, save up and grab both... you'll be glad you did. ~David

I liked your review of this knife, however, I prefer a bk9 , for those who don't know this knife, it's reviews are awesome. as a citizen of Alaska, survival is key too everyday life here. The Ka Bar becker line is one of the best line of knives, I have seen. My personal choice is the BK9. I urge you too look at this as an all around survival knife. Oh, yes it's heavy, but in our changing climates, and never knowing the changing situations from hour too hour, I prefer a somewhat heavier knife for all work. I got mine from Amazon for about $80 with shipping. hey keep up the reviews, it's nice too watch, an form real world opinions.

Oh... no comparison... the SOG Force for bushcraft. The SEAL Pup is more of a Tactical Combat knife that could be used for survival. But for batoning... it's a bit small. i love you're reviews! you always go into detail with the pro's and con's of each product, and it seems you have good experience with what you do. the content is top-notch, and the picture quality is great! the only bad thing (or VERY minor in fact) is that the intro is a bit long, but thats all i can think off. btw are you going to do a review of the Fällkniven knife? i hear they are the best european knives out there and im thinking of getting one, but a good review would realy help.

Say Heah David, I never thought much about a AUS 8 Stainless Steel, until I got my S.O.G. Seal Pup Elite, that knife actually changed my mind about the AUS 8 Stainless, I think it's the Cryo Tempering they do because mine really hold's a good edge. I think I have a decent and I know not the best, but what I do have I like or I wouldn't of got tgem except for one it sort of fell into my lap and boy am I glad I was at the right place at the right time. My friend was closing his knife bussiness and had a few knives that customers ordered them but never picked them up, among the knives were the Fallkniven Northern Lights Series #3 Njord, the Puma Oak Handle Eiche Wolf, a God Father Blue on Black Switchblade I think it's a ProTech, or something like it, but a very quality Switchblade, and a few others especially a throwing hawk, all for $400.00. Anyhow the Njord is part of my 6" Stable, a very beautiful knife. I also was able to buy a Bokor Vox 2011 Collection, I think it's a beautiful modern style 6" knife, it's in 440C and it's tempered great because it holds a great edge too. I also have a complete set of Rodent Knives by Swamp Rat, when it came to getting a 6" blade I didn't like the tactical look of the Rodent 6 for what I do in the woods, so I had the blade thinned down and the top gaurd taken off and now it look's like a beefy Ratmandu on steriods and became my Fav's 6" blade. Oh also I have the Fallkniven A-1, plus some others in that size. So you see I have a nice variety of steel. That's why I can compare the AUS 8 Stainless S.O.G. uses. If the S.O.G. Force uses tgat Cryo AUS 8 then I have no doubt it's a good Survival Knife. It's just that I have a decent stable of 6" blades, getting another 6" blade might be too hard to use it in rotation, But I defenetly will try to get it because I'm so impressed with the edge retention of my S.O.G. Seal Pup Elite. Dave you do some great reviews and this video sparked my interest on the S.O.G. Force. Thanx David. Oh last night I cleaned and consolidated some boxes and found a knife I was looking for. I found a Meyerco Bob Terzuala CQ -1 I know it's really a tactical knife but it wa also designed as a field knife, I'm getting into holding my knives differently when I carve and the pointy tip might just work out great to delicate carve. I know it's 5 1/2" but it's all about how you pinch the blade close to the edge to get better control when carving, I feel so happy I found it in time for coffee on the open fire. That's what I'm talking about., again Thanx David.

Great review David! What do you think of the SOG Team Leader Survivor, the one with the saw on the spine of the blade? I'm undecided on the concept. The saw would certainly be useful, but it looks like it would make batoning rather difficult.

Great video and very professional. Matter of fact this is my main carry knife in the field right now! I definitely agree with the rating. I also have the Gerber lmf 2 and I used that knife for over three years. Over time the rubbery handle was showing extreme wear, the handle started wobbling after batoning so many logs:/. It's definitely not a long term survival knife sadly.

The human hand when it closes over any object especially a knife handle, wants a narrowing butt end not a wider butt end as many manufacturers and reviewers want you to believe. Don't believe me? Grab some modeling clay squeeze it between your hands and look at the rough shape it makes, Yes that's right, it's generally wider in the middle and narrower towards the end. This SOG handle is designed along with ergonomics taken into account, albeit not the greatest but none the less ergonomic for the human hand.

i do not understand why most people hate partially serrated blades. I personally love a partially serrated blade in a survival knife because serrations are great for stripping bark off of branches, notching, and cutting rope. the only thing i dislike in a partially serrated blade is it makes it sometimes difficult to clean game cleanly. but thats why i carry an sak as well. and a cold steel kukri so i dont have to baton =)

It depends on what kind of stainless steel. 1095 is great for outdoors; it holds a edge well but is easy to sharpen and does not chip. A stainless steel such as 154cm is considered better than 1095 because it holds an edge longer and does not rust like carbon steel.

Change the steel to 1095 ... Change the handle to Kraton (squishier) ... Reduce the blade length to 5.5" or 5.4" (for legal carry) ... reduce the stock thickness to 3/16ths (as was done on the Condor Bushlore Rev2) ... A flat pommel would prolly be more useful (for driving stakes) than the glass-breaker point. I like the over-sized lanyard hole and the overall feometry. Oh ... A MOLLE adaptable Kydex (or nylon) sheath ... At under $60 ... Look at the KaBar USN MARK-1 for a clue. Gerber ??!
