When you see them LIVE, you can see that Geddy Lee plays the bass, sometimes WHILE playing pedal synths with his foot and sings, Alex Lifeson plays the guitars and most time when Geddy is at the keys and cannot play bass, he plays pedal synths while guitaring too. That's how a TRIO can sound like 5 people. Sadly Neil Peart, the drummer who wrote almost all lyrics too, passed away. RIP Professor, one of the most iconic drummers in Rock ever. Greets from Germany, hope that helped a bit.

Rush is one of the best, most unique prog rock bands ever, and one of Canada's greatest contributions to music. Their live shows are legendary, and all of the members are ridiculously talented. I spent many an hour when I was younger rocking Rush albums. Hopefully the younger generations will discover their stuff.

Rush is arguably one of the best bands ever... If you're going to narrow that down to prog and unique than they are definitely number one
@mitchellhodgemeyer7306

@@SirWrecksy I'd say that's probably a fair sentiment - though I suppose it depends on what you consider prog rock. The Beatles for example could be considered prog rock once they moved into their whole Sgt. Pepper phase. I'd still pick Rush over them every day of the week and twice on Sunday though as a much better band. Speaking frankly, I never liked the Beatles. I think their musical catalogue is boring and nothing they do moves me. Rush on the other hand speaks to me.

@@mitchellhodgemeyer7306Personally I don’t consider them prog, I just consider them Rush. However, I’m not fussy about genre categorisations either. I just view them as rough guides. But for some people they set expectations for what they think they will hear.

Uhmm they're pretty much Prog. Prog is also a broad term and its versatile. We have Psychedelic Prog (Pink Floyd), Symphonic Prog (Moody Blues), Folk/Blues Prog (Tull), Jazzy Prog (Gentle Giant), Prog Metal (Loads to mention), hell we even have Progressive Pop (Supertramp). People are saying Rush is just a hard rock band with just lengthy songs. Ok. How about lets call them "Hardened Progressive Rock" or "Progressive Hard Rock". I mean prog is all about breaking the rules and crossing the boundaries. When COS got released the label and everyone hated them then they released 2112 to raise a middle finger. That's pretty prog. Also i give Rush their credit. When King Crimson, Genesis, Yes, Gentle Giant are turning pop and mainstream sounding, Rush stayed loyal and stayed prog then released Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures. I mean they were kinda late and all 4 of these bands are their inspirations but it's still worth noting and they still went pop/synthy afterwards lol.@@kevinmcfarlane2752

Geddy, Alex, and Neil were all tremendously gifted. But for all the talent, the three men were friends as well as band mates. Geddy and Alex were first-generation Canadians who became friends in grade school, and Alex came later after the band had formed when the original drummer had health problems and had to leave the band. There is a non-music video of them having dinner during the making of a documentary about them, which is hysterical to watch. How much they like each other while giving each other a hard time is so amazing. Also, the entire induction into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is fun to watch, with Dave Grohl and the late Taylor Hawkins of Foo Fighters inducting them, and playing one song with them is great!

RUSH: MASTERS OF TIME SIGNATURES: They don't sit down and say "Let's write in (x) time signature." They just write what they feel. Jacob's Ladder alternates between 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4, then 6/8 and 7/8. Limelight is 7/4 not 7/8. The middle of La Villa (A Lerxst in Wonderland) is in 7/8. Kid Gloves is in 5/4 for the intro and verses and 4/4 for choruses. The Trees starts in 3/4, moves into 4/4 and the solo section is 5/4.

Watching Rush as kids in their 20s knowing they would become one of the greatest bands of all time is like a time warp. Even then, they all had mastered their instruments but watching Neil Peart on the drum kit and knowing he would go on to be recognized as the greatest drummer in rock history is just mind blowing. Even at this age you could see he had timing, style and imagination that we hadn't seen before. He was already on a level very few ever approached. Of all the drummers I've seen, only Ginger Baker and John Bonham are in that discussion. Rest in Peace Professor. We all miss you.

This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

There are a few things Rush fans recognize about the band - Neil peart, the drummer, who is also the lyricist, is considered elite. A phrase that has been stated many times is that he is your favorite drummer's favorite drummer. Meaning he is highly respected within the circle of great drummers. Geddy (Gary Weintraub) Lee also holds a place of respect among the best base players in the rock genre. And his voice is unique and awesome, although a certain percentage of people simply do not like it. Alex Lifeson has the same respect, but for a couple of reasons, just doesn't get the broad acceptance of his greatness, like the other two. First is because the other two guys are so good that they take attention. The second is that being lead guitar in a rock band kind of requires a special place within the band in order to stand out. Rush doesn't do that. You will notice that within progressive rock in general, all of the instruments can demand attention, and specifically for Rush, all three are doing this simultaneously. If you notice in this song, when Alex is performing his actual "lead" on the guitar, Neil and Alex are just jamming so hard and clearly that you have to listen to all three all the time. Also, the guys are just cool guys.

I meant Neil and Geddy in that last sentence. YYZ is another one that is a 4+ minute base and drum assault with Alex providing his normal understated brilliance. Geddy's mother was a polish jew and a Holocaust survivor. When Geddy was young, she would call out for him in the neighborhood. Her yiddish/polish accent made the r's sound like d's and so his name became Geddy.

This is a video made of the studio recording of the song. The members of the group are: Geddy Lee - main vocalist, bass player, keyboard player and pedal player. Alex Lifeson - Guitar, Midi-pedal player. Neil Peart - Drummer and main Lyracist Geddy is one of the busiest people on stage during live shows. All three of them are masters at their instruments. Neil is known as "your favorite drummers favorite drummer". He was one of the best in the world. So sad that he passed away in 2020 due to brain cancer, RIP Neil. If Lulu loves hair, then you should watch Xanadu from 10 years ago (11 Million views). This video is from the era where all three of them have LOTS of hair. Geddy is a humble grounded guy who lets his skills do the talking. Regarding the keyboard set up, old ones had flat tops or in a rack for cooling. Geddy is indeed singing, playing the keyboards and his primary talent playing the bass on this and all other Rush songs. Geddy has a unique and underrated voice, and he's a good keyboardist, but he's arguably the best rock bassist ever. It's 3 guys. 3. Making that entire wall of sound. And all of them are in the conversation for "best ever at their instrument." But the best argument for best ever is Neil Peart. There are plenty of Rush songs to check out, Spirit of the Radio is an excellent one to see, but the best thing to do to REALLY understand the greatness of Rush is to check out Neil's absolutely insane Drum solo, live in Frankfurt. Progressive Rock meets sci-fi..that's Rush..iinstrumentally challenging, kinda spooky and tricky beats with lyrics about deep subjects (Drummer wrote most of 'em..He was an avid reader with his own mini-library.) Studio u saw was their own up in Canada's woods..they'd isolate themselves during recording. Thier motto..."If it excites us to play it, we know our fan'sll like it too". Another great song off the same LP is "Red Barchetta"--About a future when gas-powered cars are outlawed.

The background on the window is from Studio Morin Heights where the recorded. Morin Heights is north of Montreal, Quebec. You have to pass throught St Sauveur which is big on skiing and many many places around there have ski resorts. Sadly, the studio burned down some years ago and was abandoned.

Yea, Rush is a great band from Canada (hence the snow)! I'll give you some excellent choices for the next upcoming songs from them...'LIMELIGHT', 'THE SPIRIT OF RADIO', 'SUBDIVISIONS', 'RED BARCHETTA', 'THE TREES', and 'TIME STAND STILL'!!! You can't go wrong with ANY of them! They made a lot of great songs over their career and there's still some good ones i didn't mention but these fall in the top for me.

That was Le Studio in the mountains of Quebec. They recorded there quite often and filmed this video and Limelight and Vital Signs there. It became abandoned and was burned down by arsonists.

Ladies, ladies! Y’all definitely need to go down this rabbit hole! Over 40 years together, best 3 man band ever. I suggest, if you’re interested in their sheer musical prowess, an instrumental called La Villa Strangiato. For a wonderful feeling overall, I suggest The Spirit of Radio. And if you can see a live video, even better!

Saw them live in 1981 with an incredible Irish guitarist named Rory Gallagher as their opening act, and boy what a show. There's just no getting around that Rush's drummer, the late, great Neil Peart, was like hearing God on drums!

Wonderful to see different generations listening to one of the premier rock bands that ever existed. Rush were completely unique for several reasons. First off they were a trio which is rare. They didn't care about image, even through the (in retrospect) sad MTV era. They just wanted to be the best musicians they could be. Then there were the lyrics and themes (99% written by percussionist extraordinaire Neil Peart) no other band dared trying to pull off. How many musical acts wrote about The Holocaust, suicide, the solar system (black holes or our moon), love, freewill, individualism, religion, greed and so on? None... just Rush. Lastly being 55 years old now and having seen MANY live bands over the years, Rush put on a live show that no one else could pull off. To be able to reproduce studio recordings on stage with just the three of them was a sight to behold. Hopefully you continue with more Rush reactions down the road I would highly suggest you focus on their R30 tour. You get a great look at how they pull off all the sounds live. Cheers!

RUSH, a great Canadian band. Neil Peart (the drummer and lyrics writer) actually later on bought that studio and and a house not to far from it. Something Canadian I think you will really like is Canadian Gordon Lightfoot. He wrote a song about a true story of a US Great Lakes Freighter sinking and the total lose of the crew in 1974. He donated all the proceeds to the families of the lost men. On the anniversary of the sinking at the Maritime Cathedral in Detroit they would ring the bell 29 times. After Gordons death they started ringing the bell 30 times. An other song kind of based on his life "Sundown". He was on a hot song writing spree and probably drinking more than he should. But, he was churning out songs non stop. While this was going on his "Partner" was going out every night to the bar and having a good time. "Sundown" was the word he picked to designate all the men chasing after her for a "Good" time.

CRAP!!!! I forgot to mention the title of the first song. "The Wreck Of The Edmond Fitzgerald." Unfortunately I was a year off and the anniversary. The Good shop and crew when down November 10th 1975. Gordon has a vary Folk/Rock sound to his music. Please check him out. He's on par with RUCH for talent as much as 1 person can be against the powerhouse that is RUSH.

Around the time that this album was recorded, the drummer, Neil Peart, who was already being compared to the best rock & roll drummers in history, was involved in a tribute to the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich, and Neil was unhappy with his playing, compared to how many of the best jazz drummer played. So after some inquiries, he began taking drum lessons from one of the greatest persuasion and drum teachers. Over the next few years, he actually changed his style in very subtle ways, and became an even better player. He was someone who never stopped learning his instrument, and was continually getting better and better at it, until he and Rush retired. Sadly, Neil died of brain cancer in January of 2020.
