MLMs primary victims are middle class (usually) religious moms. They target that “mom guilt.” Oh, you work? Shouldn’t you be spending more time with your kids? We can help you with that! Or - oh, you don’t work? Shouldn’t you be helping your spouse financially support your family? We can help with that! They target that sense of failure. That whatever path you choose won’t be enough. Obviously, they’ll take anyone who wants to sign up. But their motivation tactics often work best on those who are riding that line financially.

You are absolutely correct 💯. Why do I say that, you ask? Unfortunately, I was one of those people! I stayed home with the kids, and I got the “wouldn’t you love to be able to continue staying home but actually get paid to stay home and be a Mom?” Ugh! I also got the “wouldn’t you love to use the product and be a walking billboard? You’ll easily lose all the baby weight, and people will ask you all the time what you’re using, and you can make an easy sale right there.” It makes me sick to my stomach to think back and know I was weak and so gullible! Needless to say, I didn’t make a penny, but I definitely lost more than a few! Oh…and I didn’t lose ANY of the baby weight with those products! My niece was selling Monat, I don’t know if she still is or what happened but she worked her way up to the trips and big money. She was one of the top sellers in North America. In the process she lost friends and alienated family. Honestly I feel bad for her. She has a degree and could be working in a high paying job, but she chose to stay at home and raise her family. These are the target for MLM’s, SAHM’s and people with disabilities that cant’ work full time. Disgusting.

I realized when I got “magically thin” due to a chronic illness, that if I pretended i lost weight through a product, because I was actually starving & was losing weight very quickly, I could prob do quite well using social media for income & repping an MLM. I have a mind that thinks of things like that lol, but immediately realized it would be so evil that I could never do that AND I’d end up with only fake mlm friends in my life. But I will say, it feels like a large chunk of American women are actively trying to get scammed. At some point, we need to either check and see if something’s wrong with people’s 🧠 or announce that we cannot spend more public money on helping them if over 250 warnings have already been issued. There’s a much bigger problem going on and I’m kind of tired of having to muster sympathy for people with normal cognitive skills who actively choose this. I found out in 1997 how this all worked & have shared that info, to absolutely no avail. If you choose to be dumb and kinda evil, you probably will get screwed over, and quite frankly, good! These ladies are bad actors with weird motives that disrupt everyone else’s lives. No more sympathy.

I think regulation is iffy, with the current political climate, but I am guessing that the lawsuits are hitting them hard AND they may think they can break into the insane sales numbers on TikTok, but that feels like a micro trend. I really doubt Sephora's ability to last in the UK (as a British citizen). Britain is dominated by Boots and Superdrug which has really good points/rewards systems. Hearing that Sephora's points can only be used towares sample size items sounds like a joke to be honest. With Boots and Superdrug I can use my points towards products, and they always have great deals. I'm honestly unsure on what their differentiator will be here. Boots has more luxury brands than Superdrug, whilst Superdrug caters towards the younger gen. What can Seohora offer, except a lackluster rewards system?

Just a reminder that it is 110% normal for founders to sell. It’s how it works most of the time. Founder often has a clear personal vision, and if they own 51%, it is their call, but smart founders realize that once there are full time career employees & contracts & a whole economic flow, that they rarely have all the knowledge needed to adjust their specific vision so that it does not negatively effect that infrastructure. Often founders, even in the non profit world, cannot see how the company has changed positively by adding other people with visions of their own, or they won’t be reasonable about plans and imperil their employees. I admire Patrick for knowing when it’s time to go, it seems he’s built something very strong and is now leaving operations, something he’s not expert in, to the people who can take it from here. A founder leaving voluntarily & head held high is a beautiful thing, plus it’s just so much work & at the top, getting life balance sometimes hurts everyone below you. Best to exit gracefully & keep on doing new things or retire into a leisure life!

You cannot use MLMs on a resume. Every hiring manager I’ve ever spoken to will tell you it is a bad sign and not to add it to a resume. What makes me wonder is did the ftc or whoever is in charge nudge them about being a legal pyramid scheme? If so that makes sense that they would remove the recruitment aspect. Also high commison rates have been accounted for already in any mlm product. They already cost so much to allow commissions to be paid. If you remove the commission cost you get the actual price the makeup should be sold in retail withoht the middle man salesman getting the commissions paid to them.

I think this is going to be the new MLM business structure and more companies will be making the change. Not only are people becoming more educated on MLM's and refusing to join, but they are reporting them. I think MLM's run a real risk of being shut down as pyramid schemes, so they need to adapt.

Honestly, I don't really feel for these people anymore. We all have jobs to pay our food and rent and it's always tragic, if someone loses their income. But nowadays, with multiple tv shows and so much information online, people can't tell me that they didn't knew how problematic MLMs are. These women are not stupid, especially the higher ups. They're fantastic sales people who are able to talk other women into joining them, just to make more money for themselves. They know exactly which game they're playing and as long as everything is working in their favour, there's nothing wrong. But when they suddenly can't rely on their passive income anymore, then the company is to blame?

She had 2 bedrooms in her house for rhe inventory, sold to wvery woman at work that would listen, has a fb page where she has to post everything every week, she even had so much at one point she had people come shop her house. It stopped being as popular so she had to condense down to one bedroom to rent out the other one. She qould ask people to come over ans hang out but really wanted people to come dress mannequins and take photos of inventory. Needless to say we dont hang out anymore. Shes still in it and posts on fb weekly but i can tell business is really slow even with all the new styles.

So typically if you’re in an MLM you cannot be in another MLM like it’s kind of a big no-no I don’t know if it’s an actual rule but so what about with this can you be affiliate with other companies like can you do your own thing else holidays and they don’t really care because if that’s the case then what’s the difference really because you can go straight to their website you can buy make up without giving someone “credit” so idk I’m a bit confused

I wasn’t impressed with Seint. The product is just meh. Their brushes are really good. I do like the building you own palettes, but the only product I liked was the bronzer and highlighter, but as eyeshadow- not so much for its intended purpose. I threw out the foundation and blush as it’s more work than necessary to get the products blended seamless. I don’t have that much time getting ready for work.

Unfortunately, there are about 10 MLM company headquarters within an hour of where I live. I believe Seint is also located here in Utah. We are overrun with MLMs. I've always bern curious about Seint, and my next-door neighbor used to sell it. I've seen the dark side of MLMs too many times to ever be willing to support one ever again. I'll have to think about trying Seint now that the structure is different. So far, I feel icky about their start as an MLM and the people they would have had to step on to become successful.

*hairstylist of 14 years here 👋 - i've followed quite a few hair influencers and even former colleagues get sucked into the BIG haircare MLM. So many of them have had to do a massive rebrand because they topped out and lost their credibility as stylists. When you are a corporate marketing cog who pushes products HARD, your clientele notices. MLMs go a step further and want to loop in your client to sell products. No brand is going to work for everyone. If these "makeup artists" are professionals, they should assess their options and work with brands that align with their preferences, values, clientele, etc. From the perspective of the hair world, this affiliate structure is honestly very very generous, especially if its being drop shipped to the consumer and not just sold as wholesale.

I'm also not particularly fussed about the new loyalty program. There are so many online brands here that routinely do 20%+ sales that the only meaningful perks from Sephora are the ones they had already, i.e. 10% of 2 brands (for those that are exclusive to Sephora) and £5 off each £100 spend. I don't need a random birthday gift, I'd rather have a discount kthx!
